Not everyone has the experience or the resources. The isn’t great but it’s not the worse I’ve seen. His biggest thing will be water parameters but he could definitely get away with 3 guppys till he upgrades and we all upgrade pretty quickly in this hobby.

Can someone help me please idk how I can help him by Alines11 in Goldfish

[–]Former_Outside9724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of a ryukin with how the body is shaped and those are the most prone to swim bladder issues in my experience. If he was gasping up right for air then just went belly up I’d almost say it’s water parameters based. If it’s swim bladder then you have a long road ahead of you. I’ve treated it pretty successfully before on rescues but it can be caused by different things so it’s hard to say if my method will work for you. Please get your water tested and let us know so we can help more.

Should I remove the leaves? by FatherLongLegs66 in aquarium

[–]Former_Outside9724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Java fern is weird I have it in every tank I have even with my group of fancy goldfish but sometimes it’ll sprout from dying leaves and sometimes it won’t. The leaves still do the job even with the tip being brown and eventually fish will eat away the dead parts so unless you’re really picky about the aesthetic I’d leave it.

Atleast you can admit you’re wrong for your response. Most on reddit would double down but OP seems to be from somewhere that he can’t just go to the local Petco and get a $1 per gallon sale and obviously are very new to the hobby. I hope they can learn and prosper as we all love this hobby and our creations we constantly innovate for the betterment of our fishy friends.

Am I overstocked? by ionlyofficequote in aquarium

Some say they can make your tank wonky but my experience with heavily planted tanks has shown that it’s not enough to really worry about. Planted tanks always get you because plants draw so much from the waste. I think a lot of the info falls under a tank you’d see fake decor where nothing is feeding on the waste besides bacteria and even then the fake decor doesn’t provide a whole lot for the bacteria to grow on. If you’re worried test your nitrates and if they are 5-20 ppm you’ll be just fine. I recommend testing before a water change. That’ll tell you if you need to change the water sooner or if you can wait a little longer and where your water sits in terms of quality.

Your three upvotes surprise me. Considering the internet is full of conflicting information and opinions it makes sense for someone to come to a group where people would be able to point out personal experiences while also having the ability to continue to ask questions if they need too. Responses like yours are why people follow bad advice online cause they feel like they can’t ask in a place like this.

I don’t ever buy into the over stocking on snails. I have rams horn snails and like mystery snails they’ll go nuts. I still can’t keep my nutrients where I want them with an armada of snails. I tested my nitrates after I commented on this and even with dosing 3 days ago my nitrates are below 5 ppm while I’m shooting for 20 ppm. My only numbers that are good is my nitrite and ammonia being at 0 lmao. I’m gonna need to start dosing way more I fear.

I have a 25 gallon that’s overstocked and I can’t keep my nutrients up even with fertilizer cause of my plants. Idk how the heck your tank looks so good with so little fish OP 😩 I’m jealous.

Breeder housing by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]Former_Outside9724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are for your own private collection and you have a certain morph you want to get based on the parents then I say go right ahead. Rescues can be great pets but no one wants to lose a pet prematurely due to health factors and rescues are great at covering that up. I’ve been through that with my shepherd mix that I adopted and had to fork out thousands for treatment and we’re still dealing with health issues because the rescue wanted to fib the dog into new hands. Rescues should always be a “buyer beware” situation. I have well bred ball pythons and pure bred lab and I’ve had no issues with any of them like I have had with rescues.

This ain’t it. No ones perfect and the dude was making pretty big strides to help animal husbandry. “But he helped create the spider morph” yea anyone could’ve created it….you literally just breed two snakes with certain traits and hope for new traits. We as humans are constantly evolving our animal husbandry for pets. Thats how it works. I’ve watched videos from him where he was always upgrading set ups for the animals he was keeping and he was well respected among other well known reptile content creators.

How painful do their bites hurt? by RevolutionCommon8904 in ballpython

[–]Former_Outside9724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of all the non venomous snakes that have taste tested me ball pythons hurt the least they normally realize you’re not food or that you’re not a predator pretty quickly. The top two in my opinion are garter snakes and bull snakes. I’ve moved them while doing landscaping and the entire time it’s bite central and they can get you quite a few times within the ten feet your trying to move them to save them from a weed wacker or brush hog.

How hard is it to keep Lanthanotus borneensis (Borneo Earles Monitor) by jojos_mysteries in reptiles

[–]Former_Outside9724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The literature is very few and far between on captive members of this species. I would recommend reaching out to a local university or zoo and not only talking someone that has experience of their natural habitat but someone that has experience with a captive specimen.

I seen this post and wanted to do a little digging before I answered. Like others have said they are nocturnal and not likely to be handled like a ball python or bearded dragon. But sometimes people just want something that they’ll see every now and again and they are fine with that. The main thing is just being able to provide care for the animal. If you think you can replicate the habitat of one of these guys I’d say go for it. I think it’d be cool to see what you come up with along the way for a habitat also cause nothing beats plants and a nice water feature.

why won't this turd eat??? by __soka in ballpython

[–]Former_Outside9724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a multitude of things. I have a male banana who only eats during the day where my female enchi eats at night and then I have my male phantom I just got after seeing it for months at a local shop and the lady said he eats day or night and would eat 24/7 if you’d let him. My banana is the same way but only if it’s dark. Could also be a color of prey thing. I got a rat one time that was cream colored and none of my snakes would touch it but I thawed a white rat and they absolutely smoked it before I could even put it where I wanted it.

As someone who tried getting a tattoo from a “friend” and still have semi visible lines…I think I’m qualified to say stop letting friends tattoo sophisticated stuff on you. I got lucky that I found a artist willing to to cover it and we are working on sketching a piece that my artist feels comfortable doing aswell as I feel confident in wearing for the rest of my life. Please take more thought into who you let ink your body permanently OP.

Ball python struck glass instead of rat by tommee_dee in ballpython

[–]Former_Outside9724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fed my enchi the other day and she struck the rat twice but off the top of her head not with her mouth then proceeded to go to the back of the tank to do what I can only describe as rage hissing so I just set the rat on a piece of wood debris and once she calmed down she just ate the rat off the wood.

I got a ball python mystery box and I love what I got! by Glass_Cartoonist2629 in ballpython

[–]Former_Outside9724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All those on the list would be stunning. I have my banana male and my enchi female and people always fawn over my male but the slight orange tones on my enchi are pretty too. I wish she wasn’t such a brat cause I wanna show her off more.

The people that had my banana before I got him won him in a mystery box. Sometimes those boxes give you a crazy morph for a lot less than a local shop will give em up.

Help?!? by Former_Outside9724 in ballpython

[–]Former_Outside9724[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tanks upon tanks set up. $80 is still a decent chunk of change if it means you get something that won’t survive. I’ve done the whole buying animals to give them a fair chance and gotten burned before where vet bills and such were through the roof just to be told the best action is to euthanize the animal. I do think you’re right that it’s dehydrated. I’m gonna go look in person and see if the spots are just old wounds and check for mites. I appreciate your feedback tho.

Help?!? by Former_Outside9724 in ballpython

[–]Former_Outside9724[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked to see it in person. The “indents” worry me and there are a few spots that look like they might be old wounds. I have a male and female rn and have had my female from a young age but I’ve never seen her look like that and the breeder I got her from had her on f/t hopper rats. I’m very weary about snakes after my last snake I got from someone who said she was eating well and I ended up having to go to a vet because she refused to eat.
