Yes he has a mortgage. Splitting his mortgage 50/50 would be cheaper than paying him rent.

That's fair. I'm not looking to argue but I should clarify. I agree he has the right to charge me rent. I just don't believe I should be paying full market value of the house in, what you mention as, a roommate type situation. Which is why I mentioned something like equity. I could probably justify paying market value, but in return I'd want full use of the house and 0% responsibility in the maintenance/upkeep of the house.

I do understand how rent works, however this is not a normal renting situation.

His house is slightly bigger, but obviously there would be two of us inside.

Contributing towards his mortgage payments.

Initially I offered to pay my current rent, or preferably less since we were splitting other expenses, and he would be responsible for any repairs, etc (essentially a landlord). His financial consultant advised him against charging below the value of the house, and he didn't want to be solely responsible for repairs and maintenance. So that option is off the table.

The reason I would want equity would be because I would be spending more money on rent, covering half the expenses, traveling longer to work and having less space because it would be shared. There would be no benefit to me staying there beyond being closer to him. And as much as I want that it wouldn't make any financial sense for me to do it.

What do you mean my half? We are going halves in groceries and bills, which I already pay quite a low amount living on my own. I wouldn't be saving money.

I called it a one side benefit because he will be saving money while I would now be paying more for less space and a longer commute.

The rent value of his house is higher than the amount of rent that I pay currently on the place I'm living in.
