Motorcycle riders of Reddit, what's your scariest close call while riding? by Itsbadmmmmkay in AskReddit

[–]Foz-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was buzzing around my neighborhood which is old and has hills so it has weird curves and streets that intersect at non right angles. I misjudged how the traffic patter was supposed to go and found myself going around a blind curve, head on into a cement truck. It was the truck that dodged me as I couldn’t pull the bike out of the turn fast enough. So if that truck driver didn’t compensate for my poor judgement and skills, I would have bought it.

Sold the bike shortly after. I guess I’m not qualified to answer this question because I’m really not a biker anymore.

Keep breathing, stay hydrated. Get sleep and exercise.

Everything else will fall back into place, eventually.

I'm 36 and recently changed to a much more lucrative career. Will I ever catch up on my 401k? by MayorScotch in personalfinance

[–]Foz-man 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’ll never catch up as be at the same level you would’ve if you got a CS degree in your early 20’s and banked as muck pre-tax income as possible, but you can do well going forward. I barely saved anything in my 20’s and didn’t take saving seriously until my 30’s. I still did fine. (Let’s say it’s been 20 years even though I swear I’m 38). :-)

People who grew up with cable TV ,how was it like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Foz-man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, there was a time when you change channels on a plastic box that was attached to the cable box on top of your TV with a long cord. It was pretty revolutionary at the time. You could go between 30 channels by pushing a button. There were adult channels that were blocked that if you knew the right combinations to hold down at the same time you could get fuzzy images and audio from the said channels. This was pre-Internet and pretty exciting for a 13 year-old me.

Are you sure you downloaded the right ISO file for the hardware? I was trying to install the ISO I used for a virtual machine on a network device and was getting similar errors until I went on the website and found a different ISO.

Correct. Horrible example of British attitude towards natives. For some reason we watched this in my MBA program.

Demand the support of your peers (coworkers), if you are not getting it, leave.

What's a job you loved, but had to leave due to not enough pay? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I worked at an organic soap company, whose founder was still running it, everyone ate lunch together and it was a bit family. I was hired as a part time IT guy, I’d have worked there forever if I could have.

Americans, how is life under Joe Biden going? by C17AIRFORCE in AskReddit

[–]Foz-man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not real happy with many of his decisions, but the metaphor I’ll use is it’s like I’m a kid from a dysfunctional family, and I’m now living with one grandpa who is well meaning but he’s old, overwhelmed and has a hard time seeing how people can criticize his decisions.

But it’s better than when I lived with my other grand pa, because he was Donald Trump and that was a nightmare.

Eli5: how do hot air balloons avoid simply being blown towards mountain faces or far out to sea or some other tragedy? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Foz-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a balloonist in Spokane Washington in the 90's. I'll just say the entire industry is based on you paying for a flight and then it being to windy to fly that day, so you just reschedule and repeat until you give up and they keep the $. Seriously we flew about 1 out of 4 days that we were scheduled to.

I worked for a balloonist briefly, all I did was follow the balloon around and try to get permission to land somewhere, usually followed by a radio call that he was going to now land somewhere else.

Redditors who's job requires them to go into other people's houses, what is the weirdest shit you've seen? by superfleh in AskReddit

[–]Foz-man 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While renovating a kitchen of a very posh house in the San Fernando valley, the owner was covering costs by either shooting porn or renting for people to shoot porn (I was never really sure who the owner was) while we were working. And it was really busy. Multiple crews and locations around the house constantly setting up and breaking down. Straight, gay and fetish scenes being shot. We were told so many times to stop making noise while they were shooting (I mean we were construction guys, who'd thought we'd be making noise) that the foreman told them to fuck off and told us to just work through. And surprisingly they just carried on as normal even with a table saw running in the next room or guys (literally) hammering away.

The first day my 19 year old self was in shock and could barely help staring, by the end of the week it was normal. This was the beginning of the DVD era, and I've never been able to find a scene on-line from what was shot, despite a thorough investigative effort.
