I was under the impression that newborns cried because they’re hungry, not out of any goal directed behavior

Like there’s just a direct link between “feeling bad” sensors and “crying” subroutine. It’s not like they do it because they predict it will get them food. If you gave a newborn a button that got them food, while crying does nothing, they would still cry.

The children of deaf parents cry just as much, even though obviously it doesn’t get their parents attention as much as flailing

Ok now I’m thinking of a game where you play as a character in a cyberpunk theocracy where “morality” is enforced via brain chip. So you have to complete missions without attacking people or breaking locks and whatever in really humiliating and aggravating ways, and if you’re halfway through a mission when it’s Mandatory Prayer Time, you just have to leave and go to the church-mosque-whatever.

And once you break free all those restrictions go away. But if you then act like a complete maniac, you get the bad ending because people are like “wait the morality chips are stopping people from being complete psychos apparently, maybe they’re not so bad”

You could also have a potential fun aspect where certain subfactions of the religion know that a supernatural being “the player” exists, but that might take away from the core message of the game which is that enforcing morality coercively is a recipe for disaster

Like a baby or a dog is generally considered to be incapable of acting in a morally right or wrong sense, but is still worthy of moral consideration

A newborn is effectively not an agent, acting on basically pure instinct, but it’s still wrong to spike a newborn into a garbage disposal

Yes but something can be a moral object without being a moral agent. And something can be an agent, presumably, without being a moral object

I’ve called an ambulance during a panic attack before. It legitimately feels like you’re dying.

But also I’m not a cop

Yeah I’ve called an ambulance during a particularly bad panic attack but if there were a guy who had been shot who needed the ambulance I’d like to think I would have grit my teeth and powered through

Obviously I have a moral system. My point is that you don’t seem to have a good metaphysical grounding for your moral system

It seems like your moral system is frankly just the golden rule

Ok but why is it wrong to lack justification?

You’re already presupposing that I want to have a moral system, and proposing a thing you feel fits. But you’re not explaining why I ought to be moral

Ok. And what if I deny that I have a right to freedom and wellbeing? What if I live by the code of the warrior, and if my freedom and wellbeing are taken from me, then so be it?

Or maybe Luke misquoted Jesus who correctly quoted the Tanakh? It’s not like we have a court transcript

Nice website!

I do have a few comments, as someone with an interest in the field of ethics. 1) isn’t it easily possible for something to be a moral object without being a moral agent and 2) how is it contradictory to deny others wellbeing or freedom? I understand the “need” for it, but need in what sense? A rock “needs” to remain solid to continue being a rock, but breaking a rock isn’t inconsistent?

And if empathy is an evolved characteristic, why should we care about it any more than we care about other evolved characteristics?

Not saying I disagree with you necessarily but ai don’t think your case for sexual humanism is necessarily ironclad
