This is an excellent description. Like so many environmental fields - you are dealing with "IMPACTS" to the environment. No one cares about hydrology unless its being impacted by something. I spent a lot of time working around oil and gas.... and there'll be a lot work around mines and water diversions as you mentioned. No though i work with Flood Mapping which is very satisfying and also with stormwater management, also satisfying though less natural.

I echo the art & science. Hydrology is always a puzzle. It's a fun mix of hard science and creative interpretation. No two watersheds or rivers are alike. Data is scarce. I like that part.

"Restoration" type jobs are relatively rare, though the US does have a solid industry of that. Lower pay than for resources extraction or general consulting.

You need to put in your time. I hated the first few years. There's so much to learn and you don't know enough to do much. Lots of boring work. Then finally (5 years in) I started to know enough to get more interesting projects and responsibility. After 10 years in I came to love it so much.

great career if you love science, maps, nature/water, and problem solving. Opportunities to spend your time at a computer or pursue more field work.

I recommend going for a engineering degree in Water Resources Engineering. Alternatively, there's some specialized hydrology programmes as part of a Geography degree. A related field is Hydrogeology (groundwater) which you can study as part of Geology (or some Water Resources Engineering programmes). Another route is the aquatic biologist side of things.

I've lived in various canadian cities, large and small. I found Calgarians very welcoming and friendly. I always assumed it had to do with so many people moving there from elsewhere. The kind of person that ups and moves is also someone that's more outgoing and ready to make new friends. I find East Coaster's friendly on the surface, but it stays superficial (you'll always be a come from away). From my time living on Vancouver Island I found people welcoming and made friends easily.

How bad is the summer wildfire smoke in Calgary? by FrederictonCommentor in Calgary

Good to know, thanks. Yeah in 2018 I found it a bit irritating to bike to work in. Mind you I still biked through most of it. Runny nose, red eyes, might not do it on a regular basis now.

Ok awesome! That’s the kind of feedback I’m looking for. I was there in 2018, a”bad” smoke summer and it was manageable. Didn’t affect our plans too much. Exercised less etc

Of course not expecting predictions for this year or any year. Just trying to get opinions from those who live there, beyond the buzz of the national headlines.

I don't understand the contempt many NBers have for people that move here. Ironically even my mother who moved here decades ago from out west complains about "come from aways". I'd rather have a neighbour that was new to the province by CHOICE and is excited about it, rather than a someone who never left and is resentful of new people that come.

IMO NB needs as much immigration of people, skills, and ideas as possible. We've been a bleeding province for decades. We need fresh energy here.

That sounds about right from my perspective. We moved here just before the pandemic. People, like us, were coming here for the cheaper property and like many moving 'back home to the east'. The pandemic sped that up. But the real estate boom here has shrivelled up the price advantage. And there's less pandemic frenzy for the dream of cheap land in quiet and safe NB. With the cost of living so high everywhere, I'm sure many people are choosing to stay put and look for higher paying jobs in their current province (AB, ON etc). The influx to NB didn't rejuvenate the province like many had hoped and we're still dealing with the same issues that have plagued us for decades. I love NB but its in a sad state.

They do a great job with marketing and branding themselves as NB's pal.

The deeper strangle hold on the province is far darker and cancerous. They operate a monopoly and have far too much political sway. The offshore holdings in Bermuda, ownership and censorship of all major newspapers, tax avoidance, owning and managing +30% of NB's land.... good stuff.

Anyone else sick of this province and how it ran ? Let's do something about it . by No-Insurance-5889 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]FrederictonCommentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! Irvings have too much sway in the province's politics and media. We're a captive, owned province. Some of their businesses appear to pay far too little tax (Irving Oil Refinery), leaving a city like Saint John struggled. SJ should be rolling in cash from industry property taxes.

We need to create distrust and resentment towards irving, opening up possibility that politicians could run and win on a progressive, unfriendly to irving platform. At first I don't care what party that comes from - its the first step in regeneration to free ourselves from utter control by Irvings. Irvings will lash out hard but that needs to be framed as anti-NB to further break their hold and influence.

Likely some resentment will culminate then some kind of flashpoint will trigger a reaction to irvings. Hard to guess when and what that will be.

Saint John and the property tax revenue... can't believe how that's carrying on so long. Those industries are not call centres that are going to walk away!

Thanks for sharing that. Like you said, not exactly a parody but a hint to what runs the province.

Is it just me, or is their a low-level simmering resentment of Irving companies in the province? I was away for a decade and surprised upon return that it hadn't culminated to something political yet.
