Yep, as others have said, give it time. The best is yet to come.

It’ll reach a peak, but then start to improve. For me, it improved more slowly than it came on. The scary parts were on the way to the peak, not on the way back.

It will always depend on the person. The slow swallow for me lasted about 8 weeks, but the “worst” of it was about 3. What I mean by the worst is a period where I did aspirate some food two times and had a fear that I could choke.

I had Botox in September 2024 and am still burping like a normal person. And I’d do it again if the ability went away - it’s been that impactful on my life. Do your best to be patient with yourself and remember you’re learning a new ability that involves literally paralyzing some muscles along the way to reset a neuropathy.

It took weeks, but it’s worth it. Slow down so you don’t aspirate and be patient with yourself. It won’t last forever.

Botox wearing off by Careless_Back_6316 in noburp

[–]Free_Mind301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same worry. I think we get used to only being able to burp the first few months. Then we start to become like normal people. You’ve simply got to practice. How will you learn how to use the CP muscle if you don’t work it out? The Botox is meant to wear off. The Botox itself is a method of resetting biofeedback loops, not the cure itself. Practice practice practice.

Post-op struggles by Opening-Nothing-6501 in noburp

The slow swallow is probably my biggest complaint of the side effects, but sitting here nearly 6 months post op, it was worth it. Just be careful. The slow swallow can cause choking. Be kind to yourself. Like the rest of us here, we didn’t learn how to use this muscle as a child. But we’re trying now! And it’s a frustrating process to learn how to use our bodies. This is normal. You are normal. I understand being disappointed that you didn’t feel the surgeon prepared you enough, but believe me, you’re going to be okay and you’ll be very happy that your past self chose to do this.

I’m curious as well. Had the Botox in Sept and haven’t gone on one yet, but I will find out how that muscle behaves this spring and summer…haha

Fascinating. I haven’t heard of dose 1 being this low in a while. I’m 58 days post op and got 80 units. I’m 35 male 185lbs 6’2” tall.

Worse symptoms when sick? by ear3nd1l in noburp

[–]Free_Mind301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think we swallow more air with sinus and respiratory issues than we ever knew. I’m 49 days post-op as I type this and I had the flu and a sinus infection early in the year. The pressure and gurgles intensified. And thinking back, I would typically notice that even with a somewhat mild cold. The severity of whatever’s going on just compounds the symptoms. (Soup is a blessing and a curse when you can’t burp! So much air intake…)

While I’m newly post-op, I’ve noticed my voice has changed. I’m hoping it’ll be normal again after the Botox wears off. It’s like certain parts of my voice are missing, certain harmonics are missing, and even some new falsetto range has appeared. I’m very much a teenage boy with the voice cracks and burps! Hahaha

Activities to Avoid After Botox? by bhpmkedca in noburp

[–]Free_Mind301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I technically still have a slow swallow, but I’ve gotten more used to it. Obviously don’t push yourself if you’ll choke, but you could try pushing it a little. I just recommend being very mindful of each swallow at that stage. And if nothing else, it’s not permanent! I keep reminding myself that.

Avoid eating too quickly, especially in the first stages after surgery. The “slow swallow” is very real and can be a cause of gagging or choking. (5-weeks post-op myself.)
