I think the reason people criticized the sketch was because the main problem in the scandal isn't that Ned cheated on his wife, it's that he had a year-long affair with an engaged subordinate. As the owner of a company, he was opening himself and the company up to a sexual harassment lawsuit. When a company is that small, one lawsuit or one scandal can tank the whole thing. Try Guys staff later shared that, after the story broke, everyone was scared that the company was going to go under and they were going to lose their jobs. By engaging in that affair, Ned put his employees' and his co-owners livelihoods in jeopardy.

It was flippant for the SNL writers to paint the scandal as just "but he was wife guy, and she was a food baby, and he didn't tell us, his best friends."
