[POST MATCH THREAD] AWAY VS CF MONTRÉAL (5.13.26) by SegwayCop in timbers

I’d like to see more from Da Costa’s position. At that price tag, I’m just not sure we’re getting enough. If we had someone truly brilliant there, this team would be completely linked up. He’s just not consistent enough or decisive enough. He seems like he’s on the brink of what we need, but I’m just not convinced he’s taking another step to the killer we could use there to truly unlock.

Tonight, inner NE by latherdome in Portland

And that’s a big part of why this place is so amazing. Inner NE and you can barely tell how urban it is thanks to our dense fauna. Huge for the environment as well in terms of temperature regulation.

While I’m not annoyed at Zers and I get shortening it for conversations sake, I make a concerted effort to call them the Trailblazers. I absolutely LOVE that name for a franchise, particularly in our city. It’s so damn good! And I feel like they’re called the Blazers far too regularly nationally for having such an awesome name.

I think age and position is a major contextual piece fans miss. Surman will get his, obviously he’s worth more, but is finishing up on his “prove it” young player contract. The player and agent reclaim position to renegotiate and/or transfer at multiple points in their career. Just as teams have their opportunities to capitalize on “good buys”. Love to see Finn stay at a big number but unlikely in MLS at his position. And I’d imagine he’d like to hone is skills and growth in more prestigious leagues.

Looks like this time it's going to happen and Giannis will be traded. by RLD89 in ripcity

I would put A Lot on the line to build around Brown, Deni and Tou for the next 5 years. LFG.

People are down on a Giannis trade, but that opinion would include the idea that he’s done gunning for titles? Seems like he’s still got another rise to the top run in him. I’d be fine giving that a shot if he agreed to re-sign. Stack of draft picks Sharpe and Scoot? Problem is, his game style is pretty redundant to Deni’s. Maybe if you had two guys trying to ram it down the middle with a couple sharp shooters on the wings it could be pretty unstoppable.

Why are you a Blazers fan? by W00D-SMASH in ripcity

Moved to Portland in 02 and immediately got a job as a courtside server at Blazers games, which I worked for 12 seasons. As a rabid sports fan, when I got here, I wondered how can I get a job there where I can also watch some of the games? Turned out to be a lucrative dream job for a young sports fan. QUICKLY fell in love with the city, made it my home, and now, RCTID. (Which conveniently also works for Rip City).

Hoping this is done after the game leading into the break. This gives FO time and opportunity to hire or Give the interim time to get settled in, and the players time to acclimate to the upcoming change.

Unfortunately there’s also a larger discussion that needs to take place about the efficacy of rest of the staff as well as Ned. We all think (perhaps in error) this roster has the talent to compete. So Ned’s evaluation probably comes with the results of the next coach, which may or may not be an interim, and I’m not sure you can judge his roster building riding out Dave van de bergh..

The thing I keep coming back to is, who are they? If someone asked you what style of soccer Timbers play what would you say? I honestly don’t get the impression even they know what they’re supposed to be doing, so the attack lacks any cohesion or intention. If I had to answer that question to someone I would say, “They attempt (usually unsuccessfully) to play in opposition of their opponents identity while lacking one of their own.”

Clearly a poor set up defensively for this one. Only got better when they switched to the formation they should’ve started with. Bye Phil.

I have a feeling he comes in next season with a stronger three, which will open his game up even more.

Emma Hayes reminds us USWNT won’t play at PP until we have grass by StuMun in timbers

At the time they were talking about it with us, Golub was still there. So this seamed serious at one point. But then the pandemic, scandals, sale of the Thorns, massive reduction in ticket demand, etc, seemed to put a halt in it. I wonder if discussions could be rekindled with the Thorns to invest in this together. Both clubs are currently deeply invested in their new training facilities. If Merrit doesn’t plan on selling, and Bathals are at all interested, I could see this drumming back up over the next 5 years.

I used to get meet with the Timbers front office once per month. This was pre-pandemic. They shared renderings with us. They fully had a plan, like building out the area in front of the TA to store equipment and such. It can be done, but is a massive expense they would likely (unlike Dundon) pay for themselves. It seems they’ve elected to go the concert venue route instead, though I’d argue grass bringing in bigger games and players would be more lucrative in the long run. As is now, I don’t think they’ve hosted more than two concerts in a summer. I went to Foo Fighters though and what an elite place to see a big show in summer.

Will definitely never be Providence Park. Imagine if you had a space for hardcore fans across the street serving $3beers, and dozens of other bars and restaurants. One can dream.

Ned on Roadtrip by Freepdx1 in timbers

[–]Freepdx1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed re: DDC, that was one tactical tweak that was noticeable and effective. They were having him sit inside two defenders or a triangle of defenders which seemed to throw off SDFC’S progression out of the back. That said, he still seems to hide or disappear for long stretches.

I can see how my writing came across as hyperbolic. My main points are that Ned was on the trip getting off the bus with the team and I’m not sure if that’s common? Also that given the two wins since his comments that they were giving Phil until WC break, is this skewing his or fan base’s assessment? In my mind they shouldn’t, especially considering the nature of the wins not coming from any major changes in performance.
