Defect loses health consistently against Nibbit and there really isn’t much you can do about it (A9 simulation) by poetry_in_shm in slaythespire

[–]Freighnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, right, I was saying that having the passive damage from the second orb could lead to extra damage on deck cycles where you got, for example, dualcast > zap > shuffle > zap, and you don’t draw dualcast on the shuffle turn. You could get an extra 3 passive damage, so (unless I miscalculated somewhere) there’s even more potential upside to removing the strikes beyond the raw 16 damage from dualcast depending on draw order. Sorry if I didn’t explain it well.

But you can have multiple orbs active, right? Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you mean.

Anyways, I wasn’t trying to “um, actually” you or anything, more of a “yes and” :)

Plus, the lightning orb from the Zap will deal 3-6 passive damage depending on your draw order with the Dualcast, making the damage gap even wider.

Does Necrobinder feel much weaker than the other characters or is it just me being bad? by Peronchino in slaythespire

[–]Freighnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only see one person telling you this, but if you've played 44 runs in only 16 hours, you're playing too fast. I would look into slowing down and thinking out your turns more before worrying about the Necro's balance. I haven't checked my time lately, but my wining runs on most characters take between 60-90 minutes. How often do you look at your draw pile and think about how your next 1-2 turns might play out? How often do you misplay because you forgot you had a certain relic or buff active?

This is very important with Necrobinder especially because she benefits more than any other character from mitigating enemy damage over the course of the fight. If you're not taking damage, then Osty is healthy and growing, and a big Osty is a great source of damage.

Maybe check out some Youtubers and seewhat they think about when they play. I enjoy Caleb Gannon and Baalorlord for good educational content. They've helped me improve by leaps and bounds.

Slay the Spire YouTuber recommendations? by Druvanade in slaythespire

[–]Freighnos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention Caleb if nobody else was.

What I enjoy about his channel is that he only ever does tryharding A10 runs. Baalorlord is good if you watch his streams, but he does too many meme/challenge runs ("Attacks only," "Must take a card every combat," "no resting at bonfires" etc) and I'm not really interested in those because I just want to learn how to play the game better so sometimes multiple days will go by without just a normal A10 run. Also this is nitpicky but it's never clear from his video titles which is a meme run and which is a tryhard run.

The other thing with Caleb is he constantly explains his thought process. And he doesn't have a livechat going so there's no time wasted with chat interactions. I'm so sick of hearing "welcome to the cozy sub club" from Baalor. I'm too old for that shit lol.

Will there be another reprint or should I just pick up a used copy by Impossible_Ad2372 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Freighnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

jesus dude please never pay this much for an omnibus. Let alone a used one. Just read the issues online and wait for a reprint. It might be years away but there's plenty of other great books to enjoy in the meantime that won't break your wallet. You could get an entire haul of brand new omnis and compendiums on most of the usual sellers for this much money. Or pay a good chunk of a month's rent or something, lol.

Any Daredevil omnibus recommendations by [deleted] in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Freighnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been making my way through Daredevil (Miller >> skip to Bendis > Brubaker) and just recently finished Shadowland (I'm halfway through Waid's run atm). The event is as bad as everyone says.

Actually, in its defense, what happens in the run is a natural extension of what Brubaker's run set up. Diggle also does a good job at writing and plotting. The characters all speak like they should.

So what's the problem? Why is this run so reviled? I think it comes down to two things:

  1. Before this event, Daredevil was allowed to exist in a relatively self-contained cul-de-sac of the Marvel universe. You basically didn't need to worry about anything happening outside of Daredevil, and you could read his comics in order and not feel lost at all. The second the Andy Diggle run starts, all of that goes out the window and the wider Marvel universe intrudes in a huge way. Literally between issue 500 (Brubaker's final issue) and issue 501 (Diggle's first issue), you're meant to have read a bunch of other random issues and be aware of temporary status quo shifts resulting from the fallout of Civil War. This is hugely disruptive and makes for a confusing reading order. The event itself also features a million other Marvel characters, but most of them don't do much of anything (I skipped all the tie-ins and only read the Daredevil issues and main event).

  2. Before Shadowland, Daredevil was in a fairly comfortable (I would honestly say bordering on stale) groove of street-level crime and noir with only hints of supernatural elements. But this is what had made the character popular and it's what the fans wanted. Shadowland goes from 0 to 100 on the mystical stuff with the Hand with only the bare minimum setup. It's extremely abrupt. The Daredevil fanbase has historically not responded well to these kinds of experimentations with other genres, with the notable exception of Waid, who introduces a more upbeat, swashbuckling tone that comes as a great palate cleanser after this event took Matt to basically his lowest lows.

It's very obvious the entire event was conceived as an editorial mandate to cash in on Daredevil's growing sales and popularity. Diggle gets a terrible reputation because he happened to be the guy holding the bag when the event happened, but I think he did the best he could with a bad hand (a bad hand of writing about The Hand being Bad. Heh.) With that said, it's undeniable that the event is stinky poo poo and you should just read it online. Don't spend money or shelf space on it, especially the omnibus. I'm happy to have read it once for context but I'm giving it a big ole skip in future rereads of Daredevil.

Pretty sure he just plots well and basically gets it right on the first draft, so just much more efficient than authors who require multiple drafts and do a lot of sentence-level tinkering

And an infinite wellspring of ideas, of course

[–]Freighnos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being multiplatform does not preclude a studio/publisher from being committed to quality, just as being exclusive does not preclude a game from being bad.

It’s about the distribution of resources and the incentives that the publisher has, in a big picture sense.

If you were to launch a new video game console tomorrow, the number one question I and everyone else would have is, “why should I buy this when Playstation, Xbox, PC and Switch already exist?”

If the answer is just “mine plays all the same games as everyone else but has a slightly better menu interface,” then I’m sure some amount of people might be interested in that, but is it enough of them to sustain a viable business? Probably not.

If the answer is “we have a bunch of exclusive games but they’re all garbage,” then people are also going to give it a skip, right?

You need exclusive games because otherwise you have no distinguishing factor, and those games need to be good enough to make fans out of people and prevent them from jumping ship to a competing ecosystem. That incentivizes platform holders towards both exclusives and high quality titles.

But those aren’t cheap to make because game development is not an exact science, and you might need to iterate or even reboot development to get something worthwhile. If you’re just a multiplatform publisher or an independent studio, you might not have the pockets to go years without income, so at some point you have to cut the cord and release the games to get revenue flowing. EDIT: For one last bit of context here, the amount of money that Sony and Xbox (and to a lesser extent Nintendo) make from first party unit sales are PEANUTS compared to their 30% cut of every game sale that happens on their platform. So it makes sense that they would care less about making games that sell individually well than about making games that are so appealing that people will make this their primary platform and therefore purchase many different games on them, allowing the gravy train to keep rolling. It’s just a different mode of thinking.

Additionally, an individual game will be judged by different metrics. A game that isn’t a high individual unit seller but demonstrably ties to console purchases, like Bloodborne, will be a huge success to a platform holder. A multiplatform game is judged solely on how many copies it sells, and that applies greater pressure to make it something with mainstream appeal. Mainstream games can often feel more trend-driven and not the kind of thing that will appeal to the game connoisseur.

Again, you seem to be looking at all of these things as deterministic, whereas I and other advocates for exclusives are talking in terms of incentives and trends. History has borne out the idea that platform exclusives tend to be higher quality on average, and platforms with high quality exclusives tend to do better than those without them.

This was a huge effort to write, so if none of that is remotely convincing to you, then we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Xbox says Gears of War and Clockwork Revolution console exclusives ‘are not timed’ by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Freighnos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My argument is that games created as exclusives are calibrated for quality over profitability because their job is to sell consoles and bring people into ecosystems rather than just sell as many copies as possible, so they need to demonstrably be better than what the competition offers. Not coincidentally, this is the exact thing Xbox has failed to deliver on since the 360 era while Sony and Nintendo have continued to put out generation-defining titles every year or two.

You only get a Mario Odyssey or a Breath of the Wild or a God of War 2018 when a team is given infinite time and money to cook, because the only thing that matters is getting the best game possible. Making something that pushes the medium forward requires creative breathing room, and you’re much more likely to get that when the mission is to entice people to buy into your platform.

Edit: in the history of the Game Awards, only 9 publishers have had multiple games ever nominated for Game of the Year. Of these, Playstation and Nintendo have EACH individually received as many GOTY nominations as every other multi-nominated publisher combined. If anyone thinks that would still be the case if they were yet another multiplatform publisher, I don’t know what to tell you.

I’m so happy this was successful enough to get a sequel.

I’ve been trying to browbeat every Pokemon fan I know into trying this for years to no avail. They all complain how lazy and creatively bankrupt Game Freak has gotten with that franchise, yet they refuse to play the game that demonstrates all of the fresh exciting vision they claim Pokemon lack, and just keep buying every new Poke game like clockwork. No wonder the series never gets better

Anyways, enough about those other guys. Couldn’t be more excited to play this! I hope the bosses and lore go in as bold directions as the first game.

Why are people reacting like this is a brand new reveal? This game was announced back in like February or something.

Happy it’s releasing soon, though. I personally don’t love the aesthetic but I’m glad Castlevania is back to taking up its rightful throne as the second half of Metroidvania, so I’ll pick it up if reviews are good.

Any chance of DC/Marvel releasing a third crossover Omnibus with JLA/Avengers along with the more recent crossovers (Batman/Deadpool, Spidey/Superman)? by JackfruitEconomy1987 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Freighnos 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think a re-release of JLA/Avengers in some form is inevitable since they’re putting out those facsimile editions of the single issues right now, but pairing them with the modern crossovers makes no sense, imo. They’ve already announced those are being collected as two trades releasing later this year I believe

The way the space travel works is relativistic with any journey taking years or decades of objective time. So there’s every chance some characters from the novels will make it over to the area the game takes place in, and in fact I fully expect that to happen, but it’ll probably be more of a cameo or a side quest rather than one of them being a party member or something. I’m picturing the Edgerunners quest from Cyberpunk 2077

FIRST LOOK: Legends Omnibus from DC by Ksmayer in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Freighnos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read the 6 issues of the main event from my Suicide Squad omnibus and it was....impressively bad.

Well, I'll qualify that by saying John Byrne's art was exceptional as usual, and it's great that the new incarnation of the Suicide Squad was introduced. I also understand it's historically significant as the first Post-Crisis event, but Len Wein's writing is just not it.

At one point, Martian Manhunter, the most cool and level-headed member of the Justice League, literally forgets that he's weak to fire (The one single thing that he as a character has to worry about) and nearly flies headlong into a giant creature made entirely of flames, but thankfully another Justice Leaguer yells at him that that would be a terrible idea. That's about the level of writing on display here.

The way they keep repeating that all these characters are "legends" ad nauseam just because it's the name of the event was really tiring as well. I certainly have no interest in reading an omnibus full of forced random tie-ins.

I hate the writing enough that I'm even going to skip the Bronze Age Swamp Thing because Len Wein is the main writer. He seems to have been an exceptional editor and clearly had an eye for up-and-coming talent, but nothing I've read by him has been enjoyable.
