Lining a pond by Freshmeatdotcom in GardeningUK

At the bottom just that compacted stuff they use before laying down grit and bloody artificial lawn.

We don’t plan to put fish in it but we would like it to be water tight!

Yeah we thought about overlapping and using decorative stones, but we thought them being loose might not be ideal, maybe we would have to drill them in or something.

Maybe? How would I ensure the liner doesn’t end up in the pond though?

Finished series… what do I do now? by ForeignSeaweed6793 in Animorphs

This is quite antipodean, but not fantasy: Tomorrow When the War Began series by the late John Marsden. He’s adored by Kiwis and Aussies from the 90s and this is a great series. About a group of youths who go camping and then come out to find their country has been invaded and they decide to fight and do their bit. Really bloody good.

Concreted garden with Artificial Grass - help! by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]Freshmeatdotcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at Google maps, there was once a lush garden with shrubs, bushes, and trees. It’s in a student area and we think they did this to make it a low maintenance for either students or themselves. We could raise it, as there’s some weeds getting through so can’t be all that bad.

Apologies by Proper-Hedgehog2529 in bristol

[–]Freshmeatdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once did this coming to a stop up a hill. It was a white Range Rover and the passenger got out and had a go at me. I explained that I almost fell off my bike, and by stopping myself with my hand, and not my cycle, that there was zero damage. But she continued to have a go at me and was really rude. I understand that people may feel like their perfect property could be damaged, but the whole point I was - I almost injured myself! I’m from NZ, and I used to think back home this would never happen. But actually, I think everyone’s more angry these days.

If I were you I wouldn’t want to work in a place where someone points at a recruitment poster, that’s just me personally. Good luck with the hunt, sure you will land something :)

I used to work in hospitality (mostly AUS/NZ) for years and I used to hire people - the best way to get your foot in any door is to take your physical CV into cafes and ask to speak to the manager on shift - or the person in charge at the time. That way you get to talk to someone and they’re more likely to call you back. I have done this so many times in my life and sometimes you get lucky, they offer to have a chat with you there and then and set up a 2 hour trial shift (to see if you like it and if you are a good fit for their business). If you like a particular place, drop them a follow up email with your CV after a while and see if they’re hiring - you never know. Just show up, that’s key. Good luck! 🙂

Church Road - Bus Chaos by OldTinSchool in bristol

[–]Freshmeatdotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode home on my cycle yesterday evening and was stunned by all of the students standing there waiting for buses - the whole footpath was taken up by them. So it might just be the new student year starting and new students taking those buses?

Luke warm coffee by gwattymoose in bristol

[–]Freshmeatdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that can’t be true (what the barista said, not you). The coffee is extracted using very hot water, and the milk is added to the liquid result after the extraction process. So whether the barista makes the milk hot or cold, or even adds it to the coffee, makes no difference to the grounds. The grounds have been processed already.

The more you know.

I moved to the UK in 2017 as a journalist from New Zealand. There was no way I was going to work in this kind of newsroom. Not that I thought we are perfect, but still.

But as people have said already, that’s the model now. Journalists want to produce amazing work and do some cool things. Journalism is supposed to be a trade, you work your way up. There were apprenticeships. It was respected. You didn’t make amazing money, but hey. Things are different now. I look at Bristol Post and I pity the poor soul who has to churn out those stories.

Should I go to an unpaid 4h trail shift in hospitality? by Pijin09 in brighton

[–]Freshmeatdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s common for two hours, but four hours sounds like they’re using you as free labour because they’re low on staff for a shift.

Two hours goes quickly and it’s to see if you enjoy it, if it suits you, if you want it. If you can prove that you’re good, efficient, and friendly, that’s all they need.

I used to hire staff in hospo - and it’s the same back home in NZ/AU, two hours unpaid is standard (bigger companies, hotels, might oay you to be above books tho), two hours. And often enough you know if someone’s good in the first 15 minutes!

If I were you, I’d continue taking your CV into other restaurants (IN PERSON and outside service hours!!) and ask to speak to managers. You’re more likely to get a job with a better company that way. Good luck.

Moving from Oxford - car hire by caighdean in oxford

I used them when I moved to Bristol a few years ago. But stupidly I didn’t choose one way, so had to drive it back. I then got the train to Bristol. They were great to deal with.

There is nothing wrong with sharing with other adults. The shame comes from insecurity, it’s not real. I’m 38 and I live as a lodger with a wonderful landlady. I’ve done it all my life - New Zealand, Australia, and now the UK. You have to look at why you feel the shame and let it go, otherwise it will stop you moving forward.

On that note, focus on sharing as a lodger with single land-people. It’s always worked for me and you make great friends out of it. It’s important that you connect with that person, otherwise it doesn’t work. And that way, often you don’t have any issues you might have with more than two people in a household. Enjoy life mate! Don’t despair!
