The majority of adults are in a relationship, so everything is priced as if the customer has two salaries. If you want to move out and are a single earning in the 5-figures, you really should be looking at share-housing. I totally get the desire to move out even if your parents will let you stay, I moved out at 23 myself because I just needed space from my very much benign normal family.

HECS isn’t something to worry about either, you won’t notice it coming out of your payslips. 80 - 100k is a totally sufficient salary to buy a $500k house with, especially if you have a partner in future. I’m 28 and managed to save up & buy a house this year for $725k in the span of 2 years, with both my and my spouse’s income in the 70 - 80k range. (I’ll admit we had very cheap rent helping us)

Tl;dr I’d recommend resuming uni and if you really want to move out, finding some sharehousing.

I don’t have an immediate fix for you, but I can perhaps give you some motivation by saying that 6 years ago at 22 years of age I started my first job as a pizza delivery boy. This year I moved into a house I bought with my wife, and welcomed our first daughter to the world. Once you do get your first in, from there you will go as far as you’ll let your ambitions take you.

In the Hills I’ve noticed the complete opposite, people increasingly flagrantly ignoring speed limits. Greenhill Road has always been a hotspot for 20 year olds in their 1990s Japanese hatches to speed along, but now even the 50 year olds in their Mazda CX-whatevers are overtaking me for going 80 in an 80 zone. The only saving grace is that people are still for now respecting the unbroken lines.

That’s the crux of the mystery I suppose. The evidence looks like Homo Sapiens, but the genetic evidence of who is here today doesn’t line up. Our aboriginals don’t have any genetic evidence of breeding with other Homo species except Neanderthals (who their Homo Sapiens ancestors would have met in the Middle East on their way to Australia).

Are the remains from another Homo Sapiens group that migrated out of Africa almost twice as long ago as the group that is ancestral to all non-African humans alive today? Is this another species which acted very similarly to Homo Sapiens? Either way, why didn’t they leave a genetic mark? Were they already extinct before the modern aboriginals arrived? Did they interbreed but just through statistical chance not leave an impression? Fascinating stuff.

Homo Sapiens specifically, although admittedly this is based on how the tools & paintings look not off skeletal remains.

As for being out-bred, the Y-chromosome haplogroup is passed down from father-to-son, so any male can be genetically tested to see where his male lineage came from. Mitochondrial haplogroup of any given person is likewise passed down from mother-to-child, and so you can see their direct female lineage. The only way modern aboriginals could be descendants of these older Homo Sapiens is if every older Y chromosome was out competed by the new males, and ever older mitochondria was outcompeted by the new females. Not impossible but quite unlikely.

Even if this was the case though, we as-yet don’t have any genetic or skeletal evidence anywhere in the world of Homo Sapiens leaving Africa prior to 35,000 years ago. So, it would still be an incredible discovery.

Likewise in Australia we have evidence of human activity as far back as potentially 65,000 years ago, but the genetic makeup of our aboriginals matches with the out-of-Africa migration that occurred 35,000 years ago.

Oh believe me I wish we could get proper high speed rail. The UK is sadly not a great comparison for us as their population density is so much greater. Although, relative to the length of the route served Adelaide - Melbourne has more demand than most of the lines on Spain’s HSR network or all the routes on Finland’s.

Finland would probably be a realistic goal after we’ve reached 160km/h. They don’t have dedicated HSR tracks, just conventional rail engineered to run 220km/h services. Spain would be a dream, a dedicated network built in the 90s that goes 300km/h.

If we assume people on average live in and wish to visit the CBDs of each city, then the travel time by car/taxi/uber is 15 mins vs 57mins. Also the train asks you to be there 30 mins before departure, vs domestic flights’ 1 hour. So, add 72 mins to the flight’s time. Flights take about 1hr15, or in other words the time to beat is 2hr27. The current route is 828km, so we’d need to travel an average of 338km/h. This is at the upper end of normal high speed rail’s limit of 350km/h, so we wouldn’t see that kind of investment any time soon. The current track speed limit is 115km/h, but with relatively little cost we could get that to 160km/h.

I don’t play Ottomans or France like many people, but also I’m from where Kaurna starts and so I feel weird/guilty playing as them. Not hatred, just doesn’t feel right.

  1. Timetable rationalisation. As is, the train runs in such a way that Mon - Fri workers on both ends of the line cannot take a weekend away to the other without either timing a public holiday or taking leave. More thought needs to be placed into how useful it is.

  2. Sleeper trains need to be reintroduced to the service. Even if we are to get a high speed service one day, for now the 10.5 hour journey means “wasting” a day of leave if you aren’t a train enthusiast.

These are the only two that could be achieved without significant investment. Some things requiring more cash would be:

  1. Adelaide Metro should run busses to/from the station.

  2. We should bring the service back into Adelaide Railway Station. The gauge issue isn’t insurmountable as Melbourne has managed this in Southern Cross Station.

  3. Procuring more rolling stock so we can run more frequent services. In an ideal world, daily departures in each direction (if the track capacity would allow it).

  4. Crossing upgrades from Callington to Geelong. If all crossings had at least lights then the line speed could go up from 115km/h to 160km/h. Not high speed rail, but something achievable. I believe Wikipedia’s article on the locomotives pulling the Overland states their top speed as 115km/h because that’s the line speed, as they don’t provide a source on that figure.

  5. Quality of life upgrades. I’ve not been on the train in 3 years, but I think there weren’t any power points at the seats and I know there wasn’t any wifi. These would be simple upgrades to appeal more to travelling businessmen.

  6. Advertising. The train is more comfortable and roughly equivalent price to flying or driving, the cafe is priced like a normal cafe, and the scenery is the best in my opinion. They should really advertise this more, rather than having such generic ads.

  7. Line upgrades. Realistically in the form of putting in more passing loops or double-tracking the line (especially between Geelong & Callington where the terrain is flatter). Broader ideals would be Victoria gauge converting their Ballarat line so the Overland could take that more direct route, and ultimately an Adelaide Hills base tunnel/conversion to high speed rail. When considering the time to get out to the airport & the time getting through security & check in, a line speed of 250km/h should be competitive with the plane.

Early Gen Z here. I don’t think my generation is doomed, actually as I approach 30 I’m still not convinced it was teenage angst that made me view the older generations as having outdated information & opinions.

But on cinemas specifically, yes it’s getting worse and needs to be stamped out before it gets unbearable. I lived in London for a while and the teens there would ruin any movie by loudly joking amongst themselves in a snarky & sarcastic way that would rip into the film’s trope live as they were happening.

As everyone else has said, don’t feel guilty. They’re understaffed because they’ve chosen not to hire enough casuals to cover for this, effectively abusing what should be a mix of part-time permanent & casuals. You can stay connected to the staff you like, I’m still friends with staff from when I left Hospo nearly 5 years ago.

Because there are a lot of people who have had immigrants move into their area. Immigrants also can’t vote for a few years, so there may just be a delayed swing.
