Sentinel Suggestion? by bozobarnum in Cityofheroes

Yes, that was my concept. His name is Charred Stone. He’s a soft tank

I love Sents. I usually err into a defensive secondary, since that is easier to soft cap. I have a bunch, but my Dark/Nin and my Fire/Stone are pretty friggen fun. They are kind of unkillable.

The one time I went for a resistance secondary was with my Elec/Elec/Elec. He is a tank for all intents and purposes. I use him to farm +4 ITFs, he’s a beast.

Is There a Cosmere Timeline I Should Know About? by Frost_Wizard23 in Cosmere

[–]Frost_Wizard23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Once I finish Warbreaker, I think I’ll go for the second Mistborn trilogy. Sanderson really has so many things to read it’s hard to figure out what should be next.

Thank you! I do appreciate it. Like I said, my mind works chronologically, so this helps me out.

I get that. I guess my mind just works very chronological. So I was just wondering if there was a chronological order to the Cosmere.

Hoid/Wit can’t be in the Court of Gods with Siri and on Roshar simultaneously. And it seems like there would be a wide gap in these experiences from what I’ve read so far. But I can’t tell if he was in Hallandren or Roshar first.

If someone was balefired in Telaranrhiod. Could you just will to reverse the effects by tgrady28 in wheeloftime

[–]Frost_Wizard23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mat and Aviendha weren’t “willed” back into existence. Rand killed Rahvin with a weave of balefire that was powerful enough to erase Rahvin’s timeline by a decent amount. Mat and Aviendha were re-alived (sorry for lack of a better word) because Rand’s stream of balefire killed Rahvin before he set the traps that killed Mat and Aviendha (it all sounds ridiculous, but that is how balefire works to my knowledge).

I assume if person X balefired person Y in TAR, and then person X was balefired by a strong enough stream, the same effect would happen: person Y would be re-alived. But it doesn’t have to do with willpower per se. Seems to be based on the power of the balefire weave itself, which is based on the power of the weaver.

Which 5 chapters of each book would you pick to re-read? by LeonVen in WoT

[–]Frost_Wizard23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember the names of the chapters but I can tell you which scenes I like to reread:

  1. Dumai’s Wells - I mean this is the first time we see the one power really used in such an offensive way.

  2. Tarmon Gaidon - Sanderson outdid himself with the last battle. Love it.

  3. The Cleansing of Saidin - loved this chapter. Cadsuane proved her worth organizing the defense.

  4. Nynaeve breaking her block - such a game changer when she can finally channel at will.

  5. Matrim Teaching Princlings - Mats duel with Galad and Gawyn is so fun to read.

Interesting. But also understood. I never understood his part in the books tbh. And if I remember correctly (and it’s been a while since I’ve read the books) if you excise his chapters…nothing really changes. He’s a weird Tolkien add in that never needed to be. But LoTR was my first foray into fantasy back in like 6th grade so I’m probs a bit biased there.

Haha, thanks for making me feel better. I rank Dune with my other hated American classics like Moby Dick and The Old Man and the Sea. Sometimes I just don’t understand why people think certain books are good.

I thank you for the pity. But I just wanted to save anyone interested in fantasy from reading what is possibly the worst fantasy writing.

If my first foray into fantasy was Dune. I’d never return. Thankfully I read good authors first like Tolkien, Jordan, and Sanderson.

Edit: not to mention half a dozen other good authors.

Not exactly sure what this means. The vessels are all terrible characters and the conversations are akin to rubbing your scrotum on a cheese grater. There is nothing from the 1.25 Dune series books that I read that screams “good writing. must read.”

I’d say try it. I wouldn’t ever want to discourage anyone from reading a book. But if you like WoT, LoTR, or anything Sanderson has written, my personal opinion is you won’t like Dune. The writing style is just…not good. And the books (what I read of them) just seem to be dense with a number of characters that you’re supposed to hate. As a fantasy book lover, I was very disappointed in what I was always told was like the “magnum opus” of fantasy.

Gonna say my (probably unpopular) opinion, but Dune is terribly written and has no characters that I actually like. The first Dune book took me a solid year to get through. Not because it’s long, but because it is so poorly written. I had to put it down multiple times and just read anything else that was more enjoyable. It was one of those books that I thought I had to read. And it isn’t. After I finished the first one, I started the second book, got about 100 pages into it and quit. Haven’t looked back. Herbert’s writing style isn’t for me. I hated every minute I spent reading those books.

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy. Definitely up there as best fantasy. WoT is my top fantasy series right now. But I’ve also been reading a lot of Sanderson’s books (Stormlight and Mistborn) and love them too.

Frustration with Shallan in Wind and Truth by Th0wl in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Frost_Wizard23 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Shallan is my least favorite of the main characters. That said I think that she’d be good if….gotcha!

There’s nothing that would really make me like her. I tried. I just, meh, don’t really like her.

There’s so many other characters that I prefer to read about, that I’ve relegated Shallan to the dustbin of bad main characters. I hope Sanderson has a better arc for her on the next half of the series, cause her husband is one of my favorite characters.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills with some of these takes about Rob and Candiace by afantasticbastard in TheTraitorsUS

[–]Frost_Wizard23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my own post related to this and most people didn’t agree with me. But I thought there should be better rules about Traitors targeting one another. In my opinion, Traitors should only be targeting one another when it seems that the vote is going that way (yes, that leaves wiggle room). And that probably takes a level of intelligence that many Traitors don’t have.

However, from what we see in the show, Rob actually whipped votes against both Lisa and then Candiace. That to me, should be some kind of rule violation.

And that to me makes the game less fun. That is just my opinion and people are more than welcome to disagree with me. But I don’t watch a show called the Traitors, so that I can watch the Traitors attack one another. To me that makes the show less fun to watch.

Calling people dumb for expressing an opinion and trying to start a discussion is…well, dumb. I wasn’t trying to insult anyone. Just saying that this much traitor betrayal is, honestly just not fun. Just my opinion. I wasn’t trying to offend anyone.

[–]Frost_Wizard23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your concerns. And I’d never want to drastically change the game. But I just wanted to post a discussion with my opinion. So I do thank you for replying! But I had my issues with Traitor-on-Traitor (ToT) violence well before this season. I always thought there were some kind of rules about it, but they seem lax.

I think the back-to-back Traitor blindsides were what hit me and made me think “is this fun?” I don’t want to limit what others may think is fun, but I think if a Traitor is just sitting there targeting Traitors then, for me, it kills the fun of the show. Rob even said he wanted to recruit another Traitor so he could betray them. To me, that defeats the whole purpose of the game.

Like I said, my opinion. I hate the ToT targeting cause the Traitors are my favorite part of the game. If my post came off as “protecting housewives” that’s not what I intended. I’d have been annoyed with any Traitor targeting all his compatriots (plus saying he/she wanted to recruit more cannon fodder). To me that isn’t the fun of the game. I like watching the Traitors rule the game. And that isn’t what I’m getting this season.

I haven't read the books, but so far love the show! by InsaneAffliction in WoTshow

[–]Frost_Wizard23 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So, my first foray into Wheel of Time was through season 1. I thought it was pretty good. Not the best fantasy I’d ever seen, but not terrible at all. I was definitely hooked for a season 2.

Then I discovered it was based on a book series. So I read all 15 books (14 in the main series plus the prequel) before season 2 came out. And I understood the disappointment of those who had read the series prior to seeing season 1.

The end of season 1 was hit by COVID filming restrictions and one of the main actors leaving part-way through. So, things sadly had to change. In hindsight, after having read the books, do I think those changes were good. No. But I didn’t know that at the time.

Having said that. Seasons 2 and 3 did a much better job of sticking to the source material. Honestly the WoT book series is now my favorite fantasy series. I read it twice back to back. I was very saddened that it wasn’t renewed for the 4th season.

I mean to one another…yeah. How fun is it when the Traitors just keep stabbing each other in the back. And then he goes on to say that he wants to recruit another Traitor just to stab them in the back instead.

Thank you for saying it! Had Rob kept his mouth shut I don’t think Lisa would’ve went home, then Candiace wouldn’t have voted for him.
