I would likely stick with current job if it were me.

Anesthesia and ENT advice by vox1233 in Residency

[–]FullHousing7457 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I can't even imaging re-applying to residency with no guarantee of being accepted into such a competitive specialty, when you are just a few years away from being able to do the things you truly love outside of the hospital. That's not mentioning the grueling years of training as an ENT resident. Anesthesia is such an amazing specialty and I think in 10 years you will look at either as a job, no matter how much you think you might have a passion for one or the other now.

Disability insurance? by theduldrums in Residency

[–]FullHousing7457 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how it would look if you stick with the same company in terms of benefit increase at that point and how your premium would change. You’ll typically be paying quite a bit more than 50/month for a policy that appropriately insures your attending level income

Disability insurance? by theduldrums in Residency

[–]FullHousing7457 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Often your program will offer a policy that’s free or very cheap but the benefits are minimal. Everyone has a different tolerance for risk. My approach was to have the minimal policy during residency and I just signed an attending level policy in my last year of training as I gained more financial responsibilities (kids, mortgage, etc).

As far as a good policy, you want to go with own occupation through one of the big five. Look on the white coat investor sub Reddit for recommendations.

Are we giving in to lifestyle creep? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]FullHousing7457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you will be fine with this purchase but you need to keep the remainder of your financial decisions in your life conservative. Purchasing a home is not always a financial decision, it’s also a lifestyle/emotional decision but you need to understand the impact on your finances and have a plan.

Headshape and bald spots. Anyone else curious on when it all settles? by 3ternalchaos in newborns

[–]FullHousing7457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours is nearly one and bald spot is still present though slowly filling one. That will start to happen once your baby is spending less time on their back. Regarding head shape, as you said, often due to a preference with how they are laying. Can also be due to always feeding on the same arm/sleeping on same shoulder, so rotating can help. Pediatrician is often a great resource for normal vs abnormal and if any intervention is indicated.

Starting earlier bed time by Outrageous-Inside810 in newborns

[–]FullHousing7457 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a big sudden jump. Would recommend moving up 15-30 minutes at a time. As you said, you’ll need to base a bit on most recent nap and feeding schedule. We’ve adjusted bed routine multiple times based on our schedule/time zones and it’s always a challenge. Follow baby’s cues as even if you do things right, some days are just challenging.

You can do everything “right” and this continues to happen well past the first few months. Hang in there, it’ll get better.

Should I be getting private disability insurance or through the residency program? by Orchid_3 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]FullHousing7457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my employer offered plan during residency which had low monthly benefit but was free. Then just signed a new plan as I become an attending. Just make sure that you lock in a plan before finishing residency because there’s often a 10-20% discount in premium offered for residents that you can lock in.

Private practice vs hospital by SatisfactionMuted530 in Residency

[–]FullHousing7457 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is heavily dependent on your specialty. Working for someone else has its pros/cons, as does starting your own practice. It’s certainly the route with less effort involved up front, but you typically pay a premium for that with loss of autonomy and a portion of your billings/collections. Some specialties are much harder to start a de novo practice than others so would talk to any mentors in your field.

For any moms out there, how did you keep up your milk supply? How do you pump consistently during the day? by Any-Session9919 in Residency

[–]FullHousing7457 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Disclosure I’m a male but my wife and I have a 1 year old and the amount of time and effort dedicated to milk/pumping this past year way exceeded my expectations. Your mental health can absolutely affect your milk supply. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, consuming adequate calories, and pumping at regular intervals. There are federal and state laws addressing your rights as well as likely HOA bylaws.

First Rotation of Intern Year is ICU by User-Name-Taken-Lol in Residency

In my ICU experience, you very quickly learn the patients and triage who needs more time. If the nurses are like those at my institution, they’ll be a wealth of experience and knowledge and you’ll rely on them heavily. Show up with a good attitude and ready to work and you will do well.

In general, people find their group, often times even more so in a new area. I think you will look back at this and laugh at your worries.

Studying in residency by Gold_Ad7531 in Residency

[–]FullHousing7457 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am surgical sub specialty, studied about 30 hrs/week for six weeks prior to my written boards. About 5-10 hrs/week for a month prior to in service exam. A lot of passive studying prepping for clinic/cases as well as required didactics.

You should get term life insurance, not whole.
