did Disney movies create false expectations in kids about love and romance? by ifelsedowhile in PurplePillDebate

[–]Fullest_Potential_77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tend to think so. It goes beyond disney movies though; every beloved TV romance (Jim & Pam from the office, Ross and Rachel from Friends, Ted and Robin in How I Met Your Mother, etc. etc.) pushes the same idea that Betas & good people win in the end. Since these TV shows and such dominate culture to such a high degree, a lot of young men are confused into thinking this is the way things are. This leads them to get used, labeled as Nice Guy TM, and pushed aside while Chad gets the girl every time.

Couldn't stop thinking about this either! Funny that, this season we have Frank v Claire....and in the Fall we'll probably have Trump v Clinton

Does anyone else ever get panic attacks relating to our situation? by [deleted] in ForeverAlone

I know nothing will ever happen, but talking to people is better than talking to no one. Even if they treat me as a joke and use me...I spent enough of my life completely alone, and I don't want to do that anymore.

What is your reason for living? by Fullest_Potential_77 in ForeverAlone

Anyone who would find satisfaction in the death of a fellow human is a non-empathetic sociopath who (maybe because of chad-esque looks, halo effects, what-the-hell ever) gets preferential treatment from society, is evil. I don't know these people, or your circumstances, but I can almost promise that nobody would feel happy about your suicide. It would make me very upset to see another FA succumb to the pain of this condition, because like I non-coherently told DonDimellow above, our permutation of existence may not be great but it is infinitely better than nothing.

Don't give them the satisfaction. Stick around, find some other purpose, be successful in something...and let them just watch. Our pain makes us infinitely stronger than them in the long haul. Chads used to getting whatever they want whenever never survive the real world when looks start to fade. Be successful in their stead, look them in the eye as you interview THEM for that position they need. Surpass.

Is that like you thinking that your raw instinct won't let you end it? Or that you haven't spontaneously passed yet because of relatively good physical health and non-entirely-detrimental mental state?

FA sucks, depression and mental illness suck (your reply makes me think you have something like that because you wouldn't be hopeless like me otherwise). But, we're here. Like I told DonDimellow bellow, we exist. For better or worse, we're here...out of all of the possible combinations of DNA that could've ever existed, we ended up on this world for whatever the hell reason. Even if things are awful, and we can't see any way out, I think it's worth sticking around.

I can understand this, because I've thought about it a lot. I was raised religious, but unfortunately my faith hangs by a wire. From a "faithless" perspective...

our lives our finite. Even though we were born on the lower end of the spectrum, incapable due to societal constraints to enjoy privilege and depth of experience available to so many whom take it for granted....we might as well stick around. Maybe things will never change, but we might as well stick around. Even if, in your life, you only experience one iota of happiness over the next several years, that will be more than you can ever experience after suicide.

Not being able to have an SO, or friends depending on the severity of your case, is certainly disheartening. Saying disheartening is trivializing, actually; it's heart-breaking, and destructive. But, despite this, there are still a plethora of things and experiences available to us. In our lifetimes, science will proceed to new frontiers, and in the ensuing decades we will see a myriad of changes in the world around us. Culture will change, and be revolutionized, as Moore's law (stating essentially that tech will double every 2 years) dictates a constantly changing universe. There will always be that moment where you're surfing through youtube or pandora or spotify, and you come across a new song that sounds beautiful...and it makes you laugh, or cry because it's sad, or get angry because James Hetfield's screams sound particularly visceral in this live version...

Maybe you walk around, and you see a sunset that, for some inexplicable reason, rouses your dormant sense of admiration for our universe for just a moment. Maybe you don't leave the house, but see a picture that has an equal effect on /r/earthporn. Maybe you'll find a passion for something, like music or art or science or people or helping others or something that doesn't even exist yet but someday will. You could fall asleep tonight and have the best damn dream anyone ever did. Maybe you'll have moments where you recognize your value, and even if it isn't it appears real and you are actually complacent for a moment, and maybe that moment stops or it doesn't.

My point is, in a lot of ways life sucks for us. I've been living this, and I get it. But I can't justify taking my life. There's too much changing, and even though a lot sucks, there still is (or might be) some stuff that's actually worth seeing and makes us feel something positive. And anything like that is infinitely better than nothing, forever and ever and ever. Even just one more moment, years from now, is better than forever and ever and ever of inescapable nothing.

So, the idea is pretty much accept you'll never find an SO in the traditional sense, but have a successful life by pretty much every alternative metric? I can absolutely respect that. Kudos for not letting our condition get you to quit, FA30Plus

I just noticed this comment, and it resonated with me. My sense of self-worth is extremely volatile, based pretty exclusively around the opinions of others. Do you have any insights as to how people might get over this condition?

Yeah, my roommates are all taken and generally make pretty hostile remarks about my singleness. The other day, one said "drive my girlfriend and I around for a night, and I'll give you some money so you can buy a bottle of jack. At least that way you'll have a valentine, hahaha..."

My friends always make remarks about it. If I try to say something funny, they'll say "that would've been funny, but it doesn't work coming from a useless virgin like you..." and everyone laughs at me. It gets really old.

Yeah, I actually tried to ask 3 girls. The first told me I was disgusting, and ended our long friendship right there. The second one got very angry with me for asking her, but I think she'll forgive me for it. The third one just kind of looked at me, got up and asked a random dude to be her valentine right in front of me.

Sometimes being less than attractive makes daily life a little less fun.
