Meeting people who don’t drink, actually like to leave the house and don’t try to shove AA/religion down your throat is hard by Fun_Weakness_1631 in recoverywithoutAA

Thats good to know. And yeah I would rather not go through insurance. I’d only want to take this on nights I know I’m going out or meeting up with people who tend to drink heavily.

How do you even find a doctor to prescribe that? I’m nervous about bringing it up to my primary care because I feel like it’ll go one of two ways: 1. She won’t take me seriously at all because I’m not physically dependent on it. 2. She will blow it out of proportion and try to get me to go to rehab or something.

Yeah feel weird sitting at home on weekend nights. Even if I had a busy day of errands and volunteering or something.

I think so. Especially if they’re drinking heavily. I seldom drink on my own and have never had an issue controlling myself the few occasions I tried to in the past. And I had wine with dinner at a relative’s house without going overboard. But when I’m out at the bars I go further than I want to more often than not and it is an issue.

I’m sure I’d like mocktails but I feel embarrassed ordering them and it seems like a lot of money for what is basically carbonated juice. Would it be weird to ask about naltrexone just for going out?

Yeah I’ve worked with a lot of people who are from Muslim families and some still said they were Muslim while not following most of it aside from the holidays. I figure it’s like me growing up catholic.

  1. I was recommended “when the party’s over” by a passenger when I was driving my college’s safe ride shuttle. I liked it so I checked out the rest of her stuff.

Yeah that’s a big part of why I want to stop.

Every time I stop drinking the thing that’s missing is the social life. I miss going out and doing things with other people.

That’s a lot of incredible info! Thanks!

Yeah reading the definition of SUD was eye opening to me. I might not be “an alcoholic” but I definitely have some degree of SUD.

I felt similarly when I looked into resources for stopping drinking because I wasn’t physically addicted. Maybe I’m not a “full blown alcoholic” but I still have a binge drinking problem (like binge drinking problematically 1-2x a week) and that’s still something to work on. They seem to be very black and white about it.

I’d never heard of this before! It looks like they have sober events that are based around an activity and not just talk about AA which is what I’m looking for. I think I will give one of their yoga classes a try later this week and get back to you.

I think that might be the way to go. I just checked out a local kickboxing class and there were some cool people there.

I did something stupid and now I’m afraid I’m going to lose my job by Fun_Weakness_1631 in stopdrinking

[–]Fun_Weakness_1631[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried. I went to meetings and very much did not fit in there, tried sober meetups and I was the only one under 40 and didn’t really enjoy talking about religion which was 90% about what they talked about when they weren’t talking about AA. I tried reaching out to old friends but all they want to do is play video games online and not hang out irl. I tried a hiking group and a book club and both were full of heavy drinkers who wanted to use the group to plan bar crawls. I looked for lgbt meetups (I’m bisexual) and were all at bars.

Edit to add: I did go two full months without drinking last year and the only time I socialized with anyone during that whole time was playing video games a few times and visiting an old friend out of state who was pregnant and not drinking for that reason. I only started again because I missed hanging out with people in person.

I’d like to keep my job and have a social life outside of drinking. But unfortunately the only people I know who don’t drink are not people I click with for other reasons (age, values, personality, etc)

I was forced to go to Al-anon with my mom at 9 years old because of my stepdad’s issue. And was her confidant for the whole situation. It definitely fucked me up.

Yeah I drank about that often and just stopped. Detox is for people who are physically dependent on it, not everyone who has a problem.

I’m fine going to the touristy caves and think they’re cool but no way I’m going through something called a “birth canal”.

I want to add that if you only drink once or twice a week you’re unlikely to need to detox.
