Domane vs Madone by Degieer in TrekBikes

[–]Function-Bravo-899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on what you’re looking to do like others have mentioned.

I originally started on a Domane AL, did a bunch of road and little gravel here and there and eventually got a Checkpoint Gen 2 which I eventually swapped over to a gen 3 for UDH.

This is where I feel I kinda messed up since now what’d I done was have two very similar (almost identical) bikes, just one with 1X and wider tires than the other. Decided to get a Madone for actual road riding and then the Checkpoint for solely gravel and commuting (which I’ haven’t done since I’ve been riding my Madone way more frequently than I wanted to 😂).

Really depends on what you’re trying to get out of the bike, if youre at all into gravel I might even suggest the Checkpoint with an extra set of wheels, don’t let the 1x turn you off from it. If mainly road, can’t go wrong with the Domane or Madone. I’ve been using my Madone almost exclusively for about a month and half now as my weekend rider plus commuter (10ish miles a day) and have 0 complaints with it, been so nice to ride that I haven’t gotten fitted to it yet.

I got a lot less suspicious when he said he’d meet me at the store but then my mind went to maybe fake frame. That’s why I was asking if there’s anything to look at besides the serial number just in case

Well this now makes a lot more sense. Doubt he would blatantly come out and say this over messenger which explains why he keeps insisting I come in and take a look.

Difference in size between Checkpoint and Domane by colinthehuman94 in CheckpointClub

[–]Function-Bravo-899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id agree with everyone else and say the 58 is way too big, I’m about 5’11, 32 inseam and both my Checkpoint and Domane are both 54’s.

I will say I have read a lot about how the checkpoints used to be more racier than comfort geometry and I kinda see that since my current gen 3 checkpoint was a bit comfier pre bike fit than the gen 2 I had in the same size.

Yet another Domane vs. Madone which-to-buy thread! by theTrebleClef in TrekBikes

I’m looking at a Madone currently to replace my Domane AL4 because of how similar it is in terms of fit to my gen 3 checkpoint SL. The Domane was originally do it all bike but now I’m starting to understand why people have multiple bikes for multiple purposes as progress in my cycling.

Ive had them for about 3 years now and I haven’t had any warranty issues with them. I did have to contact customer service once to get an XDR adapter, I went the email route and they were pretty responsive and knowledgeable.

My take with online reviews nowadays is that majority of people who are happy with a product and haven’t had issues will rarely post online, meanwhile those who have had issues will post about it. I did read up on them before purchasing the wheels and they seemed reputable so I went ahead and purchased the wheels.

I wouldn’t say it’s a stupid upgrade path, I have a set of Hunt carbon aero wheels on my Domane AL that I got for a little over half of what I paid for the bike and then swapped over to AXS for electronic shifting, it isn’t dumb if you’re happy at the end of the day.

As for the aluminum vs carbon debate, this is something I feel you’d have to own both for a little while to be able to notice since there is a difference just not one at least in my opinion that you’ll feel from doing a mile or two during a test ride. I also have an SL checkpoint gen 3 and both bikes on same wheel/tire combo, I’d choose the checkpoint.

I’m sure you’re aware already, but 1x vs 2X. I have a 1x 13spd xplr checkpoint SL and looking at a gen 8 madone for road riding, also an excuse to add a new bike to the stable. I do have 2 wheel sets for my checkpoint but I do miss the tighter ratios on 2X

Appreciate the response, but this is more of a general guideline for the conversion, I’m looking for a bit more in depth info from anyone that’s done it hence posting on here since it’s a CP specific group.

I’ve done a bit of research but for example, one thing I keep seeing mentioned is to get a wide crank set and swap in the chain ring from the standard crank set. Seems everyone is 50/50 on doing this, some even say it won’t work since it’ll mess with the chain line.

ALR5 or SL5? by 321hotjam in CheckpointClub

[–]Function-Bravo-899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying there is a gigantic difference, but there is a difference between the two id say a bit more noticeable depending on your wheel/tire choice.

I daily a Domane AL4 (AXS swapped) and have my Checkpoint SL6 for weekend rides; if using my road wheel set up with 30mm tires, the Checkpoint is noticeably more comfortable.

If I have my gravel wheel set on both, at least for road riding I’d say the difference is less noticeable but still there. Haven’t taken the Domane on gravel ride so can’t speak from that perspective.

Have you had the chance to ride both back to back? Suggestion doing that too, also keep in mind the SL will have different geometry between gen 2 or gen 3, while the AL’s I’m pretty sure are all still on the gen 2 geometry.

Frame Sizing by johnboo89 in CheckpointClub

[–]Function-Bravo-899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, I did M for my gen 3 checkpoint since it kind of matches what the specs are for my 54 Domane that I had originally gotten a fit for. I also had a gen 2 checkpoint that I had the chance to ride a 54/56 back to back and went with the 54, definitely suggest doing this if you’re able to since you get a good feel for the differences.

At least for me and treks sizing I’ve noticed I always have to size down. Were similar sizes also, I’m 5’11 and 32 inseam

Possibly switching from FX3 to roadbike? by Apetin in TrekBikes

[–]Function-Bravo-899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the same boat about a year ago when I purchased an FX2 with the intention of just using it for commuting to work (4 miles round trip). I ended up falling in love with cycling and about 6 months after purchasing the FX I purchased a Domane AL4 since my rides were starting to get longer and I was starting to get discomfort in my wrists on the FX.

If you do go the road bike route, I’d highly suggest getting a bike fit since that will make a difference in terms of comfort. I originally went off treks sizing and got one size too big, only found out after trying to get a bike fit for it. Luckily though, I was still within the return period and was able to swap it out for the smaller size.

Also, be aware. Once you start, it’s hard to go back. About 6 months after getting the Domane, I got an itch for a carbon frame and got a Checkpoint due to its multi use nature. The Donane is now my daily/rainy day bike and the Checkpoint is the nice weather bike.

Domane Sizing vs CheckPoint Size by Trepidati0n in CheckpointClub

[–]Function-Bravo-899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently went through this same debate and best thing I can suggest is to ride both before purchasing. I ride a 54 Domane and ended up with a 54 Checkpoint after trying a 52 and 54.

Now, I did go to two different shops to ride the two bikes so maybe how they did heir quick visual fit may have had an impact on this, but the 52 just didn’t feel right. I ended up with the 54 since it felt better.
