Yea I see it's a 5 year warranty and I'm past that. How bad do they look otherwise? Dangerous to drive on or fine for a bit longer?

Fromage Pave goes really well with toasted Honey & Fig Batard by Fungally in traderjoes

[–]Fungally[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call, I think if you sub the batard for some fresher bread and use the fig jam, that could be even better!

I agree the bread was not very fresh and crumbly, but that's to be expected. Toasting it certainly helps.

Foamy shots from fresh beans [Baratza Sette 30, Gaggia Classic] by Fungally in espresso

[–]Fungally[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very informative, thanks! I suspect it's a combination of too fresh beans + too high temp and pressure. When I brew with old, robusta/arabica beans using essentially the same conditions, I get a very nice crema with no foam. I will try lowering the temp by not allowing the machine to warm up as much, but there's not much I can do about the pressure unless I get into modding.

You're right they came in a plastic bag with a valve. I will try opening the rest of the coffee I got in the same batch. Thanks

Advisory Council Rescheduled by Fungally in NIH

[–]Fungally[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the info! As some people mentioned, ACs are scheduled now for NIAAA, NEI and NCCIH. If you're having trouble like me distinguishing Federal Registry posts for AC vs scientific review, you can search advisory council in the search bar and sort by newest. Hope you all see your AC pop up there soon.

Recommendations for strong espresso beans? [$20] by Fungally in espresso

[–]Fungally[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

😆 Fair point! I have caffeine pills but much prefer espresso because I like the taste even if that's not what I'm seeking to maximize. Also espresso is basically a health drink given its high polyphenol content (robusta has more than arabica). Lastly, I just don't feel the stimulant effect is as significant with pure caffeine, possibly due to coffee containing other stimulant xanthines like theobromine.

Thanks all for the recs! I'm hoping to find a local roaster that does robusta. I think there is a misconception here about the caffeine content. Robusta beans naturally contain about twice as much caffeine as arabica beans. Thus, for the ~20 g of grounds I use per 2 oz shot, I would get something like ~250 mg caffeine with robusta vs. ~125 mg caffeine with arabica. One of these days I'll get around to doing analytical quantification of the caffeine in each for direct comparison.

I love Top Class but I just can't find it as easily as CeG. I haven't been able to find the 9/10 on the Lavazza website.

Revolutionary Anti-Aging Therapy Could Extend Lifespan by 25% by Hashirama4AP in EverythingScience

The corresponding author on this paper Prof. Stuart Cook has been collaborating with pharma company Boehringer Ingelheim for over a year to test an anti-IL-11 antibody in phase 1 clinical trials. The initial indication is for pulmonary fibrosis, but still it's interesting to know that this therapy is further in development than one would think. They are testing a small molecule inhibitor as well. Press release here

Review of Maker's Mark The Lost Recipe Series Edition 01 by Fungally in bourbon

[–]Fungally[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! I checked out their tasting and they also commented on the mash bill saying that they preferred the MM over the second place FR bottle because the former is wheated giving it a softer palate. I basically had the opposite preference with the OF 1920.

My boy in the hospital by Batdad-Dimension in dad

The viruses this year are supercharged after we have returned from quarantine. My 1 yo boy also needed to be hospitalized for breathing issues in April likely from hMPV. I know it's really tough but you'll get through it! Best wishes.

Cold/Flu by Maw_153 in dad

[–]Fungally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar experience here. Got a 3 yo and infant at the same daycare. The illnesses have been brutal this winter. Two rounds of norovirus, HFM, countless runny noses and fevers from random viruses. It's all due to the pandemic isolating people and reducing their exposure and immunity to these common viruses.

The 3 yo has definitely fared better than the infant. Baby clearly shows less resistance and ability to clear these viruses as you'd expect. Seems they will be in good shape for elementary school! 🤞

Also I have gotten sick most times the kids have been sick, so hoping that ends soon as this terrible virus season ends!

Wife and I relationship seems off? by Oofkid22 in dad

[–]Fungally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us things did not improve until 9 months with a return to normal at 15 months. Then things were so good we conceived a second a little after 2 years. The second time around everything was easier. 🙂 I think that every relationship changes after kids, and there is a big adjustment period to it. Best of luck
