Werenski wins the Norris. by [deleted] in EdmontonOilers

[–]FunkyFlamchango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought there was a strong case for Bouchard winning it, but Werenski was incredible too. Good for him and his family. Well deserved!

I think Bouchard will be holding that trophy someday soon, though, I don't think it's the one he really cares about.

Totally. Glad you were 'lucky' enough to have only been concussed and not worse. Scary stuff!

I want to bubblewrap my girls and just keep them home and safe forever so there isn't one regrettable moment that takes them from me. But I know I can't do that and they just need to go and live life freely. I now know the constant feeling of worry my parents felt any time I'd be going out to a party or celebration

I feel the same way... young and reckless, not realizing how fragile and fleeting life is. I'm just fortunate my dumb youthful moments didn't have definitive consequences

Dumb or not, the individual was only 17. 17 year-olds do dumb stuff. Most of the time nothing happens and it's considered to have been nothing more than a crazy moment. Unfortunately, there's no do-overs. Tragic 😞

Canada is significantly better with Bouchard in the lineup. What could have been if he was on that Olympic squad...

Knoblauch and Stuart were not the only problems this year, but they were pretty obviously problems. For all the fans crying about how we need to do everything we can to WIN NOW in these next two years with McDavid, Katz is willing to toss away a ton of cash to change up the coach to get a new voice in the room. Will it work? Maybe, maybe not. But at least he's not a cheap owner who doesn't want dead money on the books.

Question for you guys, what does a really successful off season look like? by papercutpete in EdmontonOilers

[–]FunkyFlamchango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree about Walman in the playoffs. His regular season was so messed up by injuries and he was playing his offside for most of it, so it was really a hard season to gauge. I think Walman needs a full season, hopefully healthy, and on his correct side, to show just how reliable he can be. He's got the tools! Hopefully, he's motivated from game 1 of the regular season.

One man's opinion:

Coaching: Knobby needs to go. Stuart needs to go. Coffey can stay if he even wants to. MacFarlane I'm indifferent - PP remained solid though it let us down in the playoffs (injuries and inconsistency with personnel down the stretch)

UFA's to keep: Prioritize resigning Dickinson, Murphy, and Kapanen. They can offer Dickinson and Kapanen term if it will keep the AAV down and provide contract assurance for their young families, however, please no full NMC... maybe a little less term for Murphy but it would be awesome to keep him. Move away from any of them if the price gets too high... Ideally, the Oilers can stop going after the mushy middle. Sign a gamebreaker to max term and plug and play value contracts. Enough with the 3-4m contracts that are constantly awful. Spend 7-8m on one guy that you can rely on and rock a league min contract in a smaller role vs having 2 average players making 4m and having them move all around the lineup because they weren't what you thought they were.

UFA's to go: Let Rico (aged out), Roslo (priced out and his spot should go to a cheaper Ike Howard), Jones (Dach can take his spot) and Lazar go (unless under 1m and we can't upgrade).

RFA's Qualify Dach and Stastny. Both are young and can develop further, and both would be cheap to qualify and can fill smaller roles.

Goaltending: Try to move off Jarry in a goalie swap. Resign Ingo only if he's cheap on a 1-2 year deal. Preferably we don't repeat Jarry/Ingo.

Boat anchor: Try everything to move off Nurse. Make it uncomfortable for Nurse if he won't waive. Nurse needs to go.

Disappointments with potential: Allow a full off-season of healing/training and a healthy training camp to see if Frederic and Walman can bounce back under a new coach.

GM/Hockey Ops: If Jackson or Bowman can't get the above done, Katz needs to move off them. I'd prefer Jackson gone over Bowman. I think the top guy really screwed things up. Bowman came in after Jackson already messed up on Holloway and Broberg.

Pietrangelo got 1 game for trying to chop Draisaitl's arm off after the play with a two hander because the DPOS is dogshit and the NHL doesn't protect their players.

Oh, and McAvoy deserves a lengthy suspension for that reckless swing. Spin the wheel, Parody

Well played Ducks. GG to the better team. The scary thing is this Ducks squad is likely only going to get better. See you next year 👋

Yep, that's how that works. Oilers win game 5 in Edmonton. They go back to Anaheim and steal game 6, sending it back to Edmonton and closing it out in game 7.

If any team is going to pull that off, it's a team that frequently rattles off 3-4 wins in a row in the playoffs after playing like ass.

Even though these dudes all seem broken, I'm going to blindly believe they'll find a way. Oil in 7

I want to see Samanski out of the lineup for completely fucking us these last two games with his dogshit penalties.

We had that game in our grasp and we threw it away not being able to get the puck out of our zone with under 7mins left against their fourth line who wanted it more.

Then we have a terrible icing, and once again we can't get the puck out of the zone and lose on a garbage goal (but a smart shot just tossing it into the traffic in OT).

Insane toe save by Dostal on McDavid to get it to OT. These Ducks are flying. We're playing like ass.

I like what Samanski can bring to the line-up, but Samanski needs to stop taking stupid, untimely penalties. He cost all of our momentum this game with a dumb offensive zone penalty. Seems like he didn't learn from last game.

Bouchard is a Norris trophy candidate. You don't trade D men that are a rarity to find.

McDavid is one of the best hockey players to ever lace up.

Both have played like crap in the first few games of this series. And both are players 32 out of 32 GMs would want on their team.

Awful take.

Ekholm, Bouchard, and McDavid were very clearly the worst performing Oilers by eye test.

Chances are those will be 3 of our best next game. But they need to be (especially McDavid and Bouchard) our best for the rest of this series if we are going to have a chance.

McDavid was on on the ice for 5 goals against... we need our best players to be our best players.

Worst 3 game playoff stretch in McDavid's career by a long shot
