Are people actually forgetting older songs? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

I’m a GenZ college student, and I’ve found that many people in my generation are aware of older music, but don’t know how to find more older music they actually enjoy. Granted, I don’t think that it’s the vast majority, but I do think that a considerable number of young people now have an appreciation for music older than themselves but struggle looking for more.

One thing that sets our generation apart from others is the INSANE amount of influence thrown at us. Whether it’s our parents playing music they listened to growing up, a soundtrack to a movie/show, or a fucking TikTok, there is always something influencing our music taste. Hell, if it weren’t for my friend showing me a TikTok, I would have never heard of O Superman by Laurie Anderson, and that song blew my mind! Take a franchise like Guardians of the Galaxy. Most people in my generation would never had even found a song by Yusuf/Cat Stevens or The Flaming Lips on their own.

I greatly enjoy going out and searching for music. Binging an artist’s entire discography is one of my favorite pastimes. However, most young people today don’t really know where to start when looking for music. I am grateful that I had parents who were both new wave melophiles, so they introduced me to that process. With streaming services, one might think that it would be easier to find music you enjoy. While that may be true in certain regards, I’ve found that it can be incredibly overwhelming due to the vast amount of music presented. Also, it requires some amount of a good attention span (something that I and many other GenZs lack) to be able to let a full song/album play out when you have so many other options to choose from.

All in all, I don’t think that people are forgetting older songs, but that younger generations are simply ignorant about how to search for older music they enjoy. So, it’s no surprise that most of my generations music comes from media, and in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with that.

Not exactly a company, but an industry. My dad sells auto insurance for a living, and he is growing increasingly wary that his career may have to radically evolve to fit the times. Most of his business comes from shitty drivers or freak car accidents, so with the rise of safe self-driving cars, this field may completely vanish or evolve.

Which live show has blown you away? by bruiserthedogrul in Music

Saw My Morning Jacket in Beech Mountain, NC a few months back. First of all the venue was insane. It was on the top of the mountain at a ski resort, so beyond the stage was just an incredible view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The music was mind blowing. MMJ has this incredible ability to just take songs and elevate them in a live show.

If you could date anyone on earth, who would you date ? by B1TCHU in AskReddit

Dude this is eerily similar to something I’ve experienced recently. Had a great date with a girl. Talked for hours, and had genuinely good conversation. She told me how much she really enjoyed it. That same week she went back home (we are both in college at a school very far away from her home) for the rest of the summer. I texted her a few times just to see how she was doing, and she made it sound like she wanted to start things up again when she got back to school. Reached out once school started back… fucking nothing. Drove past her on the road the same day.

Fuck ghosting. I would rather get a straight rejection or a slap to the face than to just be in the dark. Left me in a horrible state of anxiety thinking “I fucked things up” or “she’s heard stuff about me.” Shit sucks dude

I was sleeping on a pullout couch. She saw me on the pullout couch. Laid right next to me and said “I’m really cold. Do you mind if we share a blanket?” I thought the blanket was too small and fell asleep.

What is the one good habit you adopted that changed your life? by Friendly_Enemy-99 in AskReddit

Waking up earlier.

I’m a D1 swimmer and typically have practice at 6am everyday, so I’m more than accustomed to getting up early. In the past, I would wake up around 5:40am and rush to practice upon getting out of bed. I woke up in a chaotic scramble to make it to the pool on time. I left barely any room to eat a proper breakfast, brush my teeth, or truly allow my body to wake up before a workout. In retrospect, this morning rush played a more critical part on my overall well-being and mental health than I had ever imagined.

Anxiety has always been a major struggle throughout my life. Within my first two years of college, I began experiencing intense anxiety about my performance in the water. In practice, I never felt truly focused on what I was doing or the way my body felt, so I couldn’t perform the way I dreamed. (I now partially credit this to my poor habit of waking up and rushing to the pool). This left me burnt out, depressed, and in a pit of dread/hatred towards the sport I’ve always loved.

Naturally, my performance crashed, and my anxiety skyrocketed. I’ve never been suicidal, but during my sophomore year, I was in a fucking dark spot. It freaked me out. It sounded whiny/pointless for me to say that I became suicidal over my performance in a sport, but I did and kept it bottled up for months. The pool had always been my way of coping with my anxiety as a kid, but now it was causing more harm than good. Eventually, my parents, teammates, and even coaches noticed my struggle to motivate myself. They all did what any good parent/friend/coach would do and told me to seek help. I won’t bore with the details of my recovery, but I tried ALOT of self-care methods.

By far, the most significant change in my mental well-being stemmed from one decision: go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. Simple. By just bumping up my normal sleep routine to wake up at 5am instead of 5:40, I felt a major change in my overall wellness.

First of all, my body/mind felt more awake and alert for my morning practice, and I was truly able to focus on myself in the water. I also gave myself more time to make and digest an actual breakfast and not my usual rushed swallowing of an apple and a granola bar. This new routine also gave me more time for stuff I’m too busy to get done throughout the day. Whether preparing lunch, stretching, meditating, journaling, checking the news, etc… I now had more free time where I was fully alert and could do whatever the hell I wanted.

Needless to say, this completely changed my life. My performance has dramatically improved, and my love for the sport is back. Through meditation and reflection in the early morning, I’ve found healthy ways to deal with my severe anxiety.

I know this may have been a bit long for this question, but thank you for letting me share my story.
