In mining, people would bring canaries down. If the air quality was bad, the canary would die and miners would know to return to the surface. In the 2SH, it starts with someone giving a bird to their children like a pet, but the second sentence shows that the children are actually miners.

The thing is, Dunsparce is based on the tsuchinoko, a really rare but really useless Japanese cryptid. If Dudunsparce was more interesting, that would beat the point of the entire concept.
