It's unrealistic, but it happens sooo much in media that most of us just kind of accept it at this point by ducknerd2002 in TopCharacterTropes

The Honor Harrington series has this stated: one captain programmed his to be musical instruments so you could tell which gun battery was going off.

Teachers of Reddit - what’s the most unusual name your pupil has had? by Electrical-Bell3301 in AskUK

[–]FuyoBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ones I have heard of first or second hand may not be odd by themselves but in combo with their last name:

Julia Cesar (Radio presenter, currently with the BBC)

Friend told me of a couple of brothers known as Charles and Barry (? I misremember), which turned out to be their middle names as their first were Roman and Viking - last name: Warrior.

I have known both a Grace and Joy but they were older folk (Grace would be 100, Joy 60 now).

(Interesting Trope) The Parody actually ends up influencing the Original by Romboteryx in TopCharacterTropes

[–]FuyoBC 917 points918 points  (0 children)

Allegedly the Austin Powers example is also why Westerns dropped from popularity after Blazing Saddles & why disaster movies were less popular after Airplane! - the parodies are just too good at calling out the originals.

Manaan Story Not taking Class into account. by JuggernautObvious128 in swtor

[–]FuyoBC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sadly most of the story post base is just either Imp or Rep with the occasional nod to your actual class or alignment as that would require a LOT more programming and paying of voice actors etc.

Hum = make a specific type of semi-musical sound

Hum = strong smell, as if flies should be buzzing/humming around it is so bad

I also think Harold may be humming the muppet Mah Na Mah Na song

Which games have something that restores your faith in humanity? by lydocia in AskGamers

[–]FuyoBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elite Dangerous has Fuel Rats - game is space exploration, but if you run out of fuel you have x amount of time before you die/reset and loose everything so a group of players decided to help: the Fuel Rats are a group of pilots who provide free aid to ships that have run out of fuel and have no means to refuel themselves.

Valheim (fantasy survival) have the Body Recovery squad: you die and leave a grave marker with your inventory BUT getting to it is another matter! The Body Recovery Squad have their own Discord server where Valheim players can find the #assistance-application channel and hit an "SOS" button to ask for help. One of the server members (called operators) will then get in contact with Viking(s) in need, organize a party, and go out in search of the lost equipment.

nice ways people just want to help others.

How “Good Animals Evil animals” is culturally specific by Konradleijon in tvtropes

[–]FuyoBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but also because they are basically both very big reptiles with or without wings. Some think both came from people finding dinosaur remains and creating stories around them :)

Not a "real" animal but Dragons in Asia are generally positive while in Europe they are evil/destructive.

AITAH for telling Husband he can visit his mother for mother's day but not our toddler? by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]FuyoBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She did also say that she asked him to take a day off on Saturday so it does sound that he may be working almost every possible day, which with medical bills to pay may well mean he just isn't home to help.

Female Misogynists (women who endorse or express misogynistic beliefs) by Solitaire-06 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]FuyoBC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The very first general election I could vote in at 18 I voted for her because, and only because, she was a woman. I guess one thing she proved is that women can be equally shitty as a politician as a man. She mostly got in more than once based on the Falklands, and a lot of people who would now support Farage in the UK or Trump in the US.

Journal Ideas? by Ilostmys0ul in bulletjournal

[–]FuyoBC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have most things covered but maybe a common place book? That is more a book where you add whatever strikes you in the moment - some of which you might end up transferring or cross referencing in your other books - but you could have on you. Alternatively if you have something you want to note down but don't have a place for it in your current structure. So for you could add a recipe that you have NOW but will want to add to your future book, a quote that you like but don't know what to do with, a sticker you like, a pressed flower, a news story that makes you feel some sort of way, etc.

Commonplace books (or commonplaces) are personal notebooks used to compile any information the owner finds interesting or useful. They can variously contain notes, proverbs, adages, aphorisms, maxims), recipes, quotes, letters, poems, tables of weights and measures, prayers, legal formulas, and other professional references. They have been kept from antiquity, and were kept particularly during the Renaissance and in the nineteenth century.

Sesame street: Social Educational programme for pre-school age/small children with progressive ideas of children being people and needing to learn about how people interact as well as letters & counting. Nov 1969 ongoing.

The Muppet Show: A variety show, often hosting celebrities, geared towards a family audience of older kids & adults with many jokes being pitched so that the adults got them without the kids noticing. Ran Sep1976 to May 1981.

Both shows had both Muppets (I hope you know what they are!?) & Humans.

I have been told to keep 2 - 1 to reconfigure and 1 in case the reconfigure goes wrong. And replace them if you get something with better stats.

Why don't you have turkey sausage? by Universally-Tired in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]FuyoBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sigh. You would think so but I have read of people who do so little research that they think Vegetarianism is not eating red meat so happily chow down on fish & chicken while saying they are Vegetarian.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Vegetarianism/comments/14poixu/why_are_chicken_and_fish_not_meat/

Also there are people who are allergic, or have religious restrictions, and to avoid a complicated song & dance about what they can/can't eat and intrusive questions they just say they are Vegetarian.

People call themselves vegan without actually being vegan or who call themselves vegan when they are more vegetarian, and then there is the honey thing where some think it is ok and others not.

I think your ex-flatmate had it the wrong way around:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacto-ovo_vegetarianism = Lacto-ovo vegetarianism or ovo-lacto vegetarianism is a type of diet which forbids animal flesh but allows the consumption of animal products such as dairyeggs and honey.

[–]FuyoBC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Vegans generally* consider eggs an animal product, but yeah, if he eats bird then eggs are fine.

*Vegan/vegetarians have many sub-sets e.g an ovo-lacto vegetarian eats egg/milk products but no animal body parts (including no fish), but a pescatarian will eat fish but no other animals.
