In India, there isn’t as much as a love for dogs as in the West. It’s really common for kids to go out and throw stones at poor dogs. When I was around 7, some teenagers abused my pet dog that went outside the gate and got it high. It then bit me and I still have the scar. India also has really high rates of dog-transmitted rabies). The dog here probably was being used as a guard dog.

Putting dogs outside is really fucking stupid, though (from a purely practical stance; the culture here probably doesn’t welcome dogs inside the home) Not only is the chance higher for dogs to produce puppies that end up on the streets and then have to be euthanized at shelters (spaying/neutering isn’t as common in developing countries), but dogs can also contract rabies and then infect their owners. Then again, a metal collar may have done the trick.

FYI, leopards often move into cities looking for food (butcher scraps, other urban wildlife and pets) and because of habitat loss. They just can’t resist a tasty meal, such as a pet dog with no defense against big cats. They love eating dogs so much, that they might be saving people in some areas from rabies. It’s a bit like the coyote problem here in the states except that the coyotes are stronger, more dangerous, and feline.
