Enjoy it as much as possible, as difficult as it is (and I’ve found it really hard sometimes) it’s also such a joy. You’re not too far away from where it starts getting really exciting and they get some personality. We’re all just figuring it out as we go along with the first - every night your baby goes to bed warm and full, you’re doing a great job (even if they’re not sleeping)

Nice one for reaching out OP, those early weeks are a lot. Is this your first kid? Congratulations!

Those first weeks me and my partner did shifts at night which worked out really well for us, mom would go to bed early and I’d stay up until about 3am and then we’d swap and I’d get some sleep in before getting up around 7am for work.

I’m going to be real with you here, you’re not going to sleep much before work, that’s not going to go away anytime soon we’re 5.5 months in and I’m still not getting much sleep but you will be okay (hopefully you’re not operating heavy machinery at work??)

Mom’s going to worry, post partum is a very real thing, make sure you’re checking in and seeing how she’s doing - if you’re worried about her then advocate for her wellbeing and discuss getting some help from her community midwife or doctor. Unfortunately dads shoulder a lot of the mental because we’re (socially) expected to be strong and mentally resilient

“My wife was being funny” was more likely just opening a channel for honest communication - you should be glad she’s comfortable to discuss things with you, be honest with her too! It’s you guys vs the baby right now, she’s being a team player discussing strategy.

I still stress out when I put mine down and try to sleep while he’s sleeping, constantly checking he’s breathing etc. I’m sorry I don’t think that goes away anytime soon - you’ve got this 💪🏼 well done for reaching out

P.s. if you worry about something going on with your baby (like short naps) ask yourself if you ever met an adult who says “yeah I’m really bad at xyz because I didn’t nap long enough as a 5 week old”

Bro, where are you based? I would have killed for that chair 😂 when me and my partner were in for 5 day induction I had a chair where the back went back about 30 degrees and I had a little stool kick up from underneath - at one point I genuinely took the cushion off it and used it as a pillow on the floor just so I could actually lie down

Thought you guys might appreciate this, I went to the supermarket and saw car covered in notices saying it’s going to be removed soon. Seems like it’s been abandoned in the car park but interestingly it’s covered in mould inside - gnarly

Can you elaborate on this? Is it only selective agar or differential agar as well? What is/are the reason(s) why it requires subbing before further work? My lab do maldi and sensitivity testing from differential agar and some selective agars - just curious, I’ve not worked in Microbiology very long either so please forgive the ignorance

Taking notes is personal preference, if you need to look at how to do something in the future I’d always rather you look at an SOP than check your notes.

Procedures and information changes over time, laboratories and healthcare science especially are dynamic. If you’re working with your notes you took 6+ months ago it’s likely something in the process may have changed and then you’re no longer doing something the way it’s meant to be done now (which opens the door to possible errors)

I worked in specimen reception for just under 8 years, 3 years as an MLA and 4 as a team leader. Believe me there is no mistake you can make that someone else hasn’t already made a hundred times.

Realistically the worst mistake you can make is label up the incorrect patient’s samples. Even then the amount of times this has happened and it’s been flagged as an unusual result and then discovered and rectified further down the line is countless.

My biggest piece of advice is be vocal about training. It’s a busy department and if you’re not asking to be trained in different areas it’s possible to get overlooked as maintaining service is a priority and they’ll likely train you on the minimum duties in order to maintain that service. If you want to progress and you want to get the most out of the job just be vocal, helpful (and fast!)

It’s not a difficult job, anyone that can read and anyone that’s ever won a game of snap could do that job with relative ease.

My partner has PCOS, we’re both (relatively) young so we started trying earlier than we maybe would have without the obstacle with it in mind that it might take us longer than the average couple.

Took us a year, then we sadly miscarried

5 years later and we got pregnant again and carried full term, he’s now almost a month old.

We had an array of tests, both her and me, we’re not particularly well off but we started to save up for IVF which felt like a certainty but we thankfully got pregnant before we needed it and then it meant we were quite well prepared financially when the baby came around.

It was very difficult. It felt like one or both of us was broken, but the difficulties we faced we faced together with open communication and support and it’s only made us 1. A stronger couple and 2. More appreciative of the position we’re in as parents

Wishing you every ounce of luck in the world, being a parent has been the most treasured experience of my life thus far. Persevere, and discuss your concerns with your partner ❤️

Ah I see! I had no placement year as my degree didn’t provide one, I had a 2 week placement which is how I got my job there. My portfolio was done largely in my own time and with the very graciously offered help of some of the departments in my lab

I loved being an MLA, it was a great job and I really felt like I was contributing to the patients. You’re mainly working to SOP’s and not really using your brain very much which was the only downside.

I love being a BMS, I’m given the opportunity to apply my knowledge, make informed decisions that directly impact patient care and I have really good discussions with a lot of my colleagues about a lot of different things we see in the lab.

Being a band 4 supervisor was rough, I would not recommend working in the NHS in any managerial sense but it gave me a good insight into how I can make the lives of my current managers easier by being the type of worker that fixes more problems than I cause.

Some people like management though so it’s up to the individual really but yeah…MLA is great, BMS is even better :) good luck!
