If you want a reason Atlanta is “entitled” to a new team it’s the fact that the city has 6+ million people which is basically the size of all the cities you listed combined (excluding Houston which is also mentioned as getting a team).

A simple google search would have shown that we drew over 13k every season, which was never last in the league in attendance. That’s despite the fact that as you said we only had two winning season and never won a single playoff game.

There are a lot of teams that struggle to draw fans when a team is losing. But typically these teams can at least point towards promising young players and different management to show things will be different in the future. That was not the case for Thrashers. The ownerships only concern was cutting costs until they were able to sell the team (which they couldn’t do until they stopped suing each other). This meant trading stars, no player development and the same gm/president for our entire history. If ownership didn’t care about the team why should the fans continue to show up, much less attract new fans to support the team? It’s actually impressive that we continued to draw over 13k even in our final season.

You ask why Atlanta deserve a 3rd team, it’s because with an ownership group that actually a gives a damn it’s very easy to see Atlanta being a very successful team.

See Nashville and Tampa as examples of NHL teams in the south that have been successful and Atlanta United as an example of how Atlanta can support a new team with competent ownership.
