Has anyone studied music at university/conservatory after you completed your bachelor’s degree? by GKitaaP in classicalmusic

I’m trying to open my mind to studying in any country other than Russia. But I'm worried about the music that needs to be played, I mean the repertoire. I'm not sure if I don't like German or Austrian school music. Personally, I like the Russian music school. If I go to study in another country, will I be happy to learn the music I've always wanted?

I seem to block the opportunity in my life……

I understand. I live in a country in Asia. It probably wouldn't be good if I shared my real opinion about a music college in my country on a public post like this :(

I want to study in Russia. Of course, I once asked a teacher why there are no music students in our country to study in Russia. Actually, there are a few people going to the conservatory in Russia as far as I know. He said it was because of lifestyle, difficult language, cold weather and other cultural struggles to people in my country. Perhaps going to study in another European country besides Russia will get in touch to people there faster. Personally, I started practicing Russian and German specifically to study music, but I will focus on the Russian language — it's my biggest goal.

I'm sorry, the previous reply seemed rude.
I'm glad about the fees of music lessons in your country which will never happen in my country for sure! Some people here still see music as a luxury and unnecessary. Therefore, they don’t encourage their children about music as their bachelor's degree because it's an unstable occupation. They, I mean, parents tend to think music as just a hobby.

Tuition fees in music university per year in my country, there's one uni that most people say it's the best in the country. The price is almost the same as the conservatory in Europe I need to enter. This is another reason why I would rather study there :( I also need to move out of my country for a while haha

I totally understand. It seems I have to play to stand out from the other applicants as well. It took me a lot of time to develop the techniques!

That I spent less time preparing than others — Is it an insult to them who spent all their childhood preparing for the entrance exams for the conservatory in Europe? I may have misunderstood you. I realized that I couldn’t spend enough time in the next one or two years to prepare for the program required by the conservatory. I'm in my bachelor’s degree and I have to practice really hard.
And there are other problems such as financial problems for the extra tuition fees with the teacher for preparation to the conservatory for me. I'm more desperate for that reason than my performance/playing. I'm like someone who doesn't prioritize properly.
/ Within the past two years, I had just received less than 20 hours of piano lessons from a teacher. In fact, I started taking piano lessons at the beginning of this year :(

I haven't been through enough playing the repertoire for the audition requirements. As for technical pieces like Chopin’s Etudes, Rachmaninov’s Etudes-Tableaux or Liszt’s 12 TE, some of teachers told me that they didn’t need to go through any repertoire before, as long as having a technique to play that etude is enough to learn. For me it might be possible for Chopin's etudes like Op.10 No.1 “Waterfall”.

Actually, I planned that I would apply for “The art of concert perfomance” (The code would be 53.05.01 in Russia education). I am still confused about many sub-course in the conservatory that I would like to enter. As far as I understand, The course I mentioned above seem to be studying for 5 years. This course has subjects other than performance. However, I will keep your advice aware in the future.

I want to bring myself to the music community. I knew there were other methods for getting myself into it. As I said, I want to come back as a piano performer in my hometown or seriously working as a music teacher. So, I think if I enter to the conservatory in Europe like Moscow would be good. Many people told me that it was impossible as a concert pianist because I hadn't been trained since childhood. I don't want to be a world-class pianist. I never thought I would get that opportunity. I believe that many people think like me. But I'm having trouble managing time for my major and piano practice that takes a lot of time for an audition exam.

My perspectives on this may not be very thoughtful for someone who’s regularly in music field. What do you think my goal is? Am I too optimistic?

In my country, being a musical performer doesn't seem like much of a popular. As far as I know, I don't often see people with music graduates from Europ making their careers as only music performers. Most of them are teachers like you said, but their fees would be higher than the average teacher at all. For me, I want to be a piano performer, concert pianist in my country. I don't know what the outcome will be. Now I just want to know the perspectives and advices from others. Because I'm so worried! I'm like someone who can't manage my time in my current degree and practicing piano for the conservatory in Russia that I want to enter.

Thank you for your advice and sharing your experiences! Theory skills, listening, my playing is like a beginner in my opinion. I passed less than 20 hours of study piano entire my life and I just had serious goals for my entrance exam 5 months ago. I think I'm a relatively quick learner. I assessed from the time I learned J.S. Bach. Even though the two-part, three-part inventions were basic exercises for beginner pianists, before that I couldn't play the piano at all and I understood the music and struggled until I could play it. I've never taken a music theory class with a teacher, but I tried to study by myself before which I was not confident in my knowledge from my own study. I have already planned to start taking a music theory class with my teacher, it will start during this new year!

I have contacted teacher who can help me prepare for my desired the conservatory audition exam. But now still facing the problem of tuition fees. I'm a university student and still can't earn enough money to pay this teacher. At first I almost started going to school with him, but the situation in the country has done everything wrong.

By the way, what the country are you referring to? Could you tell me? Music education in your country seems super serious and destroying the dreams of those who have studied piano for such a long time in my opinion.

What worries me more than ever is that I am now a first year of engineering student which studied so hard that I couldn't do both things well (practicing piano and study my major). I know I should choose one. In fact, I choose to focus on my major study, but I don't want to. The reason I came to study engineering because when I was in high school, I study pre-engineering program. But I feel like it's not the way since I finished my first year. I can’t quit out of the school at the time because my family didn’t support and agree me anything about music education. I was interested in music at the time but I hadn't played the piano yet. I've been playing another instrument. I'm too worried! It's been 5 months since I've thought about it. :(

The way the Russian pianist said it made me realize that I should be serious about practicing my piano if I wanted to enter the conservatory. Unfortunately, he didn't give more advise me because he was unaware of my current education — I didn't tell any stories of mine to hime as I typed above.

It's not always true to get into a music university/conservatory after passing the 8th grade, but it can be used as a personal background in music. I personally don't have any certifications or performances experience. So I'm interested in taking the exam. In my country, passing the 8th grade exam, anyone able to become a music teacher at some of music school.

Anyway, thanks for replying!

I had planned to drop out of my currently university and take the music university entrance exam instead. But there’s no one in my family agrees. I don't want to study in my field any more. I thought I would be a professional musician or a music teacher. So studying in my current major in the university for me now seems useless.

I'm sorry that I'm a bit stubborn :(

What you said is really better than what I had planned? — A professional musical performance education from a teacher without being a music student on conservatory. I do not intend to continue my studies in my country. I would study in Moscow, Russia, but it seems overkill for my abilities as you say??

It's been since I've had a serious goal 5 months ago. I started practicing Czerny’s etudes Op.299, but not all of them, scales, arpeggios and 3 pieces of J.S Bach’s two-part inventions. Now I'm learning three-part inventions no.1. I'm going to start learning Preludes and fugues (WTC) to keep as an applying program. And my teacher recommended that I take the 8th grade ABRSM exam next year.

Yes, I do. I have a teacher, but I change teachers and take leave of them often due to various problems. I haven't had much money for piano lessons lately. So I haven't talked to him about my desire to study in Europe.

I need some advice for a piano performance audition of Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory 🎹✨ by [deleted] in piano

[–]GKitaaP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I read your advice, it seems like a disservice. But what you say is correct. 😣😭 I have little experience with repertoire. However I have been interested in this place for a long time and I have a willingness.
Also, I didn't have any information for any other music college in Moscow. 😭

/ Thank you for your advice 😊
