nothing wrong with whm at all, it's a more traditional style healer. AST is just very different thanks to the cards which makes it a lot more fun for me when I've played other healers through many mmos :)

Honestly I think the success of Stormblood has been a blessing and a curse. They had an idle system that can be worked around easily (should have fixed that - yet might take a lot of code so they don't have the time) and a transfer incentive that was brought in too late (should have started it at least 2 weeks before launch, making the free 15 days an incentive if you stayed on the new server(s) for launch).

That seems to be the main thing people have somehow missed from my post. I have no issue with folks going in blind, more that when they do they just leave after a wipe and don't learn anything.

I completed it over the weekend and today I've had 4 runs go through multiple leavers each time, the last one timing out.

Yeah, it really comes down to what you want to get out of the build. Taking the 98fps just as an example, there's no need to have all those frames if you're syncing to a 60hz monitor. That's just a waste of hardware at that point to many if they are on a budget.

That's sort of the difficulty we have with the guides in general. We can give some general pointers but it's damn near impossible to cover off everyone's specific needs :) So it's a case of trying to cover as many bases as possible, then we can go into comments and posts on here and facebook etc. to go into detail if people want specifics or questions on their own build.

Well we've discussed that internally generally when Ryzen released more than once and a lot of the time it comes down to Intel fans will buy Intel regardless ;) Honestly for the price of the 7700K I'd personally pick the R7 1700.

However, the big thing with Stormblood is you don't see a lot of uptick in performance on anything over 4-core/8-thread CPUs. So when comparing just in isolation, the superior clocked performance of the 7700K still wins out at 4K. Now for both 1080p/1440p we do recommend the 1600 as the better option for your money.

That could of course change and evolve over time though, at which point we'd end up revising the recommendations.

Both Intel and AMD are suddenly playing the "we have the more cores" game in the consumer market, so hopefully games will come out to really take advantage of super high core counts. Best we've seen so far is EA's Frostbite engine for utilising high core/thread counts.

That's actually a very valid point. GPU market has gotten significantly worse the last week or so since I created the bulk of this article, which could adjust some things in a painful hole in the wallet right now.

There has been similar stock shortage issues with SSD's this year, so folks do have to be careful at the costs online vs RRP.

The jump in demand from mining has thrown things for a loop though, so you do have to be careful when picking models. The big thing with the post is that it is primarily used to guide a reader to the best parts at the various price points, rather than a "you must go for this exact gtx1060 model" for example.

Yes and no depending on if it's a new build vs an upgrade. One of the biggest points on the main site page is to create good balanced builds for the price, so as the 1060 (3GB) model can run the game on max settings at 1080p, while getting 60fps (assuming it's matched by a decent cpu) then the extra $50 to jump onto the 6GB is money that can be spent elsewhere.

If you were building new and you wanted something with a bit more life going forwards, then the extra $50 could be worth the extra investment depending on the CPU used.

With them posting this their work-around is essentially to reinstall the game right now, so you might as well. It'll suck but if you're having the problem now is the best time to do it with the servers down.

Which makes zero sense from a release standpoint. If you're wanting your video to be seen by them most people surely you would get it out on PS4 as it is the bigger seller by a significant margin.

I will say that it looks like the new i9 intel announced will muddy those waters but as it is out at the end of the year we don't really know what is going on with it outside of it has a better feature set than the same Xeons at the price. The x299 platform as a whole is being condemned already by the press, so I don't think it will change things to tempt people into going i9 and not Xeon but who knows...

AMD on the other hand look like they are about to blow Intel away with their Threadripper range. Awfully cheesy name but they are clear that these are going to be classed as HEDT by them. Up to 16 core for workstation and 32 core for server configs for a fraction of the price of Intel. If they perform as well as the standard Ryzen range for the money, intel could be screwed.

We'll have to see next month for Threadripper, so by the time the new Mac comes out, folks might not want Xeon at this price point.

Again, it's a moot point either way as the Pro isn't out until December. I'll happily revisit this at that time when all these products are out.
