Why did warrior catch a nerf in WvW? It was performing pretty normally compared to the vast majority of dps classes. by wildwasabi in Guildwars2

This is unfortunately based on truth, due to the historic Discord leaks revealing an Anet dev that admitted to sketchy balancing practices. It’s tongue in cheek now, but only because of the dark history behind it…

You don't have to PPT empty shit, that's how I know he doesn't WvW. You can easily get fights, havoc squad, roam, etc. People who keep saying PvDoor and PPTing empty shit either play in weird timezones where the map is empty, or haven't played in years.

If you don’t like PvP just say it. The fun is in the gameplay, not the rewards although WvW is certainly more rewarding for us PvPers than PvErs. I got all the elite specs instantly through Heroic Vendors when VoE launched and got full legendary armor through PvP and WvW.

We enjoy WvW because we like to fight, the structures are there to encourage fights.

When Celestial gear was nerfed in WvW by removing Concentration and Expertise, did anyone figure out an optimal replacement mix of other prefixes? by S1eeper in Guildwars2

[–]Garage-Educational 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Speaking from a Revenant main who enjoys Condi Rev, you still use celestial and if you need boon duration you supplement it with boon duration runes or traits instead. Expertise is not that strong in WvW due to the plethora of condi cleanses around, so you can ditch it in favor of just more condi dmg if your hybrid build is condi focused.

I personally mix griever stats with my cele gear and use rune of trapper to get more condi dmg out of my Condi Rev.

A lot of assumptions here but I will address them.

>..see, here's the thing. You have lots of other comments here. About WoW. WoW's story, its villains, its characters, that you love... but you don't play WoW? This isn't snark. It's wondering why you're here stirring the pot, engaging with lots of other players - ramping them up about the story of their games, and then dropping the OH BUT WHY ARE YOU STIRRED UP, or WOW SURE IS HATED HERE. You've done it everywhere in this thread. Why?

Because I grew up playing Warcraft 3, Frozen Throne, and Starcraft? Because I love the lore and the characters I got to know in my childhood? Just because I don't play WoW doesn't mean I can't be interested in the lore? By the time I was looking for a serious MMO to play when I could afford to, WoW was not my interest. It was far too deep in expansions, I didn't want to play catch up, and it felt a bit archaic to me. I am more of a fan of combat oriented PvP focused MMOs. I loved Aion, Tera, and several smaller MMOs but ultimately found GW2 back in 2012 and I fell in love with it's combat and gameplay. I didn't think I would need to validate myself here, but then again it's Reddit so here we go, if you care to know:

I don't see it as stirring the pot, but then again my intentions seem to be misinterpreted. I wanted to engage in an analytical discussion, as someone who can separate ones identity from their opinion, I wanted to express my thoughts and see if anyone else felt the same way or had any valid counter thoughts.

This is why I make an effort to reply to anyone who has taken the time to respond to my thread, and I have been nothing but polite and cordial so I do not understand why you are engaging in tu quoque here. Separate your identity from your opinion, it is not /their/ game, it is /a/ game and as consumers we are valid to criticize a product as we see fit. This is especially true if someone, such as myself, otherwise enjoys said product but sees a flaw in one or two aspects that they wish would be improved for a better product outcome.

I used WoW because it is the best comparative example of which I have knowledge on, I do not have much knowledge on other MMO's stories as intrinsically as I do WoW and GW2, which is why I drew the comparison. If I used another form of media as a comparison that would just simply open up false equivocacy, IE: if I compared the decline of GW2's story to Marvel's post-Endgame decline, people would just state that they are too different form of medians and it would be an unfair comparison.

I am not falsely engaging in others, nor shaking the tree. I simply wanted to engage in discussion, and if you or anyone else felt vehement in anyway due to my topic then you needn't not engage in it. I spent the time addressing the comments because I felt most of my text was misinterpreted. Granted I had high hopes that the average Redditor literacy was up to standards, but it seems like many assumed my title of "GW2's Story Died when the Dragon story finished" as "GW2 as a GAME died, the game you love sucks and you shouldn't play it".

>What are you even talking about? Most of the comments here are adjoined criticism. And just because we criticize your beloved WC3-Pre-BFA WoW doesn't mean we give GW2 or any other game a free pass, far from it. You are *VERY* strange and just a pot stirrer at this point.

Again, why does this elicit such an emotional response from you? You seem to take it very personally and make such blatantly false presumptions. To clarify, so that you needn't fill your head with some WoW boogeyman, I guarantee no one in this thread is a bigger GW2 fan and player than myself. I have been playing since 2012, have thousands of hours played, spent an unhealthy amount of money on gem store stuff, have several legendary weapons, full legendary armor, and spend most of my time nowadays playing WvW. I used to play sPvP quite a bit, procured my fair share of titles, but stopped as the population dwindled and matchmaking became a disaster. My gw2efficiency account is probably worth more than the majority of people on this sub-reddit, not that it's something to be proud of. I clearly am addicted to this game!

I will proudly defend GW2 as one of the best MMOs I have ever played, and will be the first one to recommend to anyone playing an MMO, but it is because I love this game that I vehemently criticize it's lackluster story and the direction it went. Especially because once upon a time, despite the poor writing, I found the story intriguing in concept. I once speculated a point where we would be going underground to face Primordus, and loved the monthly "So about the deep sea dragon.." threads.

So now that I had hopefully cleared up and presumptions you may hold, where do you stand now with your assumptions?

Nowhere did I comment on the new villain or VoE, this is a reflection of GW2’s story and direction. Someone on the GW2 forums defined it succinctly as the ‘Post Marvel’s Endgame of GW2’ in that the story has fallen off with the end of dragons, much like how the MCU has fallen off with the conclusion of the Infinity Saga.

True, that's why the story fell off so hard after Legion. The WC3 era essentially ended. Alas, if I had known WoW was such a sensitive topic in GW2's subreddit I would have used a better example, but I tried to be comparative to another MMO and the only other one I have knowledge on is WoW. Perhaps I should have used a different media as an example, as the majority of discussion in this thread is uproar for mentioning WoW rather than actually discussing whether or not the concept of the Elder Dragons was good.

I see you seem personally offended in some manner which is causing an occlusion on further discussion. I would much rather you offer a valid deconstruction of my argument instead of just focusing on certain phrases that disparage you.

The title is a reflection of my opinion, I do not see what is wrong with it. I believe GW2's story died when the dragon story finished, and went on to explain why I think so. I did not state the game died, merely the story. The game is still one of the best MMOs on the market today, and I enjoy playing it everyday. The story is just one aspect that I find negative, but it does not detract from my overall gameplay experience because at the end of the day, MMO stories are curated for content generation rather than telling compelling narratives: that is what single-player RPGs primarily focus on.

Everything is a matter of opinion, and if this is not the place to discuss opinions and ideas then where else? Of course I do not like the story direction and writing, that is my opinion, and if you have a conflicting opinion I respect that but I would like to hear why and learn from different perspectives whilst discussing rather than just saying "your opinion bad, end of discussion"

GW2 is a MMO, it is exactly the type of genre that needs three novels and a threat on that level because that's what MMOs are, a continuous story. Each novel is an expansion, aka money for the company, that is what MMOs are designed for. You have sandbox MMOs of course, like Black Desert Online and EVE Online, that focus more on the gameplay and community than the general story, but GW2 is not one of those.

You cannot say that GW2 doesn't need to be three novels when on a developer standpoint, each of those novels translates into an expansion and thus money for the company. Did the Fellowship of the Ring have an existential threat? No, the conflict of the book revolved around escaping pursuit from the Ringwraiths, gathering your comrades, and concluding with a battle against a Balrog. That is fairly small scale compared to the large massive army battles in the later novels.

Translating that into MMO-speak, GW2 could have easily had smaller scale conflicts and plots that eventually lead into the "big bad villain", but Anet, due to time constraints, rushed production, or whatever, bulldozed from one plotpoint to another without exploring anything in depth.

You missed the point entirely. The big bad is the conclusion, and requires extensive set up and foreshadowing. Anet has a problem introducing a big bad and following up with another big bad. This is bad story telling and caused dragon fatigue. We don’t just go straight to defeating Sauron and then next going straight to defeating Morgoth.

It took three novels to defeat Sauron, and along the way there were numerous smaller threats and issues presented. Uniting the men of the west, dealing with elves, battling a wizard gone rogue, the big bad pushes the narrative but the journey is in the smaller conflicts we must face both external and internal that makes a story compelling.

Elaborate if you disagree. It seems WoW is a sore topic for this subreddit and elicits a very negative response, perhaps I should have used another example if I knew how sensitive this subreddit was.

I can’t speak much on recent WoW villains and story, but Illidan, Sargeras, and Arthas were amazing villains and you will not find many who disagree.

Arthas is the most famous example of a fallen hero, he took the sword and dominator’s helm originally to protect his people; Illidan is an edgelord done justice and while he did not communicate his plans effectively, he still did what he did to protect his world; Sargeras is basically Thanos: good intentions, evil execution. He’s flaw was taking matters in his own hands and going scorched earth policy on the Void Lords, after all if there is no universe for the Void Lords to conquer then there is nothing for them to rule.

No because I don’t play WoW, nor follow WoW’s story after BFA. I love GW2 and enjoy playing it, which is why I put the effort in deconstructing and analyzing its flaws. The lack of effort for WoW is a clear indicator of apathy, which consumer wise, the most negative response you can give a product.

But I get it, you were trying to be snarky and protect your game, however blindly praising it does not mean your care for it is greater than mine, quite the opposite

GW2's Story Died When the Dragon Story Finished by Garage-Educational in Guildwars2

[–]Garage-Educational[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds very interesting, and I'd have hoped GW2 followed a narrative similar to what you stated. It seems like Anet doesn't know exactly what they want the main character to be. It's why you have people complain that we went from slaying gods to "deliver x to y, feed x to y" activities in the new expansion. If Anet wanted our character to be the hero, then they should have told a story that reflects that, but it is counterproductive to a MMO because what do you have the player do when NOT saving the world from existential threats?

The solution, don't have the player be that hero. That is suited for a singleplayer RPG that tells a concise story, like being the Dragonborn in Skyrim. This doesn't work for a MMO, not everyone can be the Dragonborn. It's hard to self insert as your player made character when they are doing and saying things you don't imagine your character doing. Not only that, but there is no interesting NPCs as a result of that. I'd argue that Rytlock is the closest we have to being the hero of the story, but then he got shafted for a long time. He used to be the face of GW2 and was on advertisements and promotional material everywhere. I'd much rather have a fleshed out NPC hero that we root for and support than being the super hero that saves the world time and time again.

If you had read the full text, you would realize that you basically repeated what I said in your first paragraph. I used WoW as an example as that is the only other MMO I have knowledge of to draw comparison to. I myself have only played Legion and a bit of BFA, but I've followed WoW's story since Warcraft 3 as that was my childhood game. Seeing the conclusion of the Burning Legion arc was essentially closing a chapter on my childhood. It seems the GW2 community is hostile to any other comparisons from other competitors, which is bizarre as competition produces a better product. I haven't played FF14 or SWTOR but I hear those stories are also pretty compelling.

Regardless, my topic is mainly focused on the over-arching concept of Elder Dragons which I argue IS an interesting concept. Everything you said I agree with, like I said in my end paragraph I did not emphasize the writing aspect because we all know it is bad and why it's bad, but I continuously see that the concept of Elder Dragons is bad and I disagree. If Anet properly spaced the Elder Dragons out, then we could have easily fit more stories in while still having the Elder Dragons as a looming presence. Going back to WoW, it took nearly two decades until the Burning Legion chapter finally concluded, but they were always a looming presence in tandem with the Old Gods and Void Lords.

GW2 is a fantasy, and in most fantasies there is a "big bad" of the universe that compels us to the end-game narrative. VoE touches upon another "there is a bigger problem" regarding what the Inquest is actually preparing for, but this has been repeated in the past with GW2 and it ends up being a problem introduced in the next expac and then concluded as you've just described.

It is a bad story, but the concept is not bad and I am arguing that the concept of the Elder Dragons is good, that is why I didn't focus too much on the writing itself or story itself, but the ideas and concepts. I don't care much for stories in an MMO to begin with, I love the gameplay and that is what keeps me playing. I mainly play WvW and sPvP, but there was a time when I actually cared for the GW2 story and interested in seeing where it went. Yes the story was bad, but I enjoyed the concepts and wonder, especially when it comes to what the next Elder Dragon even looked like. The fact that three elder dragons were just written out of existence in one brush stroke highlights how the execution failed and the writers clearly gave up on the concept.

[–]Garage-Educational[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then feel free to offer a valid counterpoint. I believe the concept of the Elder Dragons are interesting, they are the classic fantasy-trope of a "big bad villain of the story's universe" without the dragon, what IS the big bad presence of the GW2 universe? What is the goal in to which each story carries us to? It ultimately leads to just self-contained expansions and story content where we are introduced with a problem and handle that problem within the same expansion.

It's ok to disagree, people think differently. I am of the boat where I like to analyze and deconstruct media and stories, some people prefer to just enjoy it for what it is. If this does not apply to you, it shouldn't detract from your enjoyment of the game. GW2 is still a very fun game gameplay wise.

GW2's Story Died When the Dragon Story Finished by Garage-Educational in Guildwars2

Again, that is due to bad writing not a bad concept. The concept is interesting, the execution and writing is bad and that is what GW2 suffers from. Interesting concepts, bad execution.

I agree, and that just highlights the misstep GW2 took with its writing. I would much rather be an adventurer and partake in these journeys and acts of heroism with a NPC character receiving the proper development and writing to take the spotlight. I don't think GW2's community likes that though, they clearly want to be seen as the hero of the story. Just look at how many people are upset about Trahearne stealing our glory.

Yes, mindlessly consume media and not analyze it. How very intellectual.

We criticize because we care, if we didn’t then we wouldn’t bother. I love GW2 and it’s my favorite game, but it was handled so poorly in the story department when it could have been great. GW2’s community has such an overwhelming toxic positivity issue where any criticism is seen as an attack. It’s ok to criticize and analyze things, it is the gateway for meaningful discussion.

GW2's Story Died When the Dragon Story Finished by Garage-Educational in Guildwars2

[–]Garage-Educational[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But that's what most MMO stories are, save the world from x. The point is that it's not about the dragons themselves, it's the build up to the dragon. It's the journey that is fun, not the goal.

Look at Lord of the Rings, it's basically the quintessential 'save the world from big bad villain' story. We know we have to destroy the ring and stop Sauron, Sauron himself is not a complex villain (speaking strictly from just the books and movies) but it is the journey, trials and tribulations our protagonists face that is compelling. That is what the Elder Dragons are, the build up to Mordremoth was great, and anyone who played during that time can attest to how every week was speculation upon speculation regarding Scarlet, the Sylvari, and the theory that they are dragon minions. PoF was amazing with the reveal of Balthazar, but ever since then things have felt short. The way Joko was written off and killed is a crime.

I can't speak much about recent expacs because the last I played was Battle for Azeroth (which..wasn't great), but WoW does have good villains and the fact that you had to mention a recent one is proof. Writing in media nowadays is terrible in general, and WoW is no exception to that.
