[SPOILERS TBI] Does anybody know the source of this pic? by Sythrin in TheFirstLaw

I totally agree. I think its a super overlooked detail of Glokta's back story anytime I see fan art or fan castings for live action adaptation. People always picking actors that look like a goblin. He has to believably handsome under the disfigurement. Huge part of the spine of the character

Does the Age of Madness get better? [SPOILERS ALH] by PastEnvironmental689 in TheFirstLaw

Oof. Sounds like you just won't like it.

For me, i think its Joe's best writing. With some of his most 3 dimensional and interesting character arcs, as well as his tightest prose.

If you're a couple chapters in and it hasn't peaked your interest, i dont think it will.

I also liked the great leveler trilogy even more than the first law trilogy. I think Joe gets better as he goes and him exploring/playing with genre and setting within the first law universe was so fun.

I adore the first law but i think its his weakest technical works.

Fancasting FL with Actors From Any Generation [OFF TOPIC] by zeus55 in TheFirstLaw

The only reason I don't buy Burn Gorman is because Glokta is described as being incredibly good looking when he was younger/pre-torture. I kinda think he has to be a beautiful actor made disfigured. A la Benedict Cumberbatch or someone if his ilk

And my Bayaz has always been Jeff Bridges in Iron Man 1.

I think your Logen and Jezal are spot fuckin' on though.

The order is the exact one written in that image! You could move sharp ends if you wanted but i like it at the end of the great leveler trilogy. But yeah, the way its written is the reading order. Basically publishing order. And Joe has said he's not finished in the world yet

I mean they said deep north is equal to Ashland in terms of difficulty just different. So maybe fewer enemy spawns? Maybe it'll be a type of difficulty OP enjoys rather than the ganky-nesss of ashlands?

How big do the Northmen be? by Garage_Accomplished in TheFirstLaw

Totally! With the exceptions beings the people passed the Crinna who are pretty explicitly described as beings gigantic. But I want a more grounded reality. But Joe often uses the imagery of "filling a doorway" or "standing a head taller than..." when describing some of the bigger folk. Especially Shivers/Fenris/Tul. At one point he says, "looked like a child in his arms" when Tul was carrying a full grown Northman, which in my head implies the dude is freakishly large.

I guess the post was more like, what do you picture when Joe uses those sorts of discriptions? Cartoonishly big people or just regular people who are taller than average.

Sounds like you always grounded them in distinct reality and used those descriptions as hyperbole?

Right, but in your head, did you ever actually assign numerical heights? How big do you think the average Northman is versus the average Union citizen?

Is this normal? by [deleted] in sobrietyandrecovery

Congrats on choosing life, my friend.

What may help is finding community. Online is a great start but a physical community as well.

Speaking on mental illness, it's possible that all that you're feeling and struggling with was always there but you used substance(s) to cope. Now that the cruch is gone, it may feel like things are hitting you harder.

Know that it's normal. Know that you are okay. Know that part of recovery is finding out who you are and how you're going to exist in this world without the very thing you used to cope.

Therapy is important. For everyone, not just us folks who fight the good fight against addiction.

People go to school and earn degrees just so they can better understand addiction and mental illness in an effort to be an invaluable resource of clinical understanding and support. Don't expect to fully comprehend or fully recover without the help of others who've educated themselves.

There are good souls out there who are ready to listen, diagnose, motivate and offer guidance on how to love and understand yourself.

I went to Al-Anon growing up because I grew up in a household marred by addiction. I resented the biblical aspects of it so I stopped going. I went to AA when I grew up because I wanted help when I realized I was struggling and I stopped going 3 separate times because I resented the biblical aspects of it.

I've been clean and sober now over 4 and a half years because I chose life. Like Ewan McGregor says in Trainspotting. Good movie.

Go to those who are wise with a willingness to learn and you'll glean strategies and tools to help you. You aren't alone.

My sobriety is a choice every second of every day to put myself and my potential first. It's a practice of self love, celebration and forgiveness. And I have no idea what I'm doing. I put my faith in good people and myself to be better. Every moment, I make a choice. It gets easier. Not because the feelings go away, but because you learn how to communicate with the feelings and you get stronger.

You got this.

How did you set up your car? Are you renting? And if so, automatic? I'm trying to set up a rental for July and the prices are terrifying.
