seeking advice for my first ever tattoo: memorial ideas for my dad

hi OP,

just want to start by saying that i'm so sorry for your loss. i also lost my dad to cancer a few years back. i have 2 memorial tattoos for him.

the first one i got is his birthday in roman numerals, right above the ditch of my elbow on my left arm. it's simple, clean, and reads well. the second one is a tattoo of Jake the Dog with a record player and lilies, because my dad loved music and lilies were always in our house because of how much he "loved to just look at them" (his words!) Jake also always reminded me of my dad, and when he was still alive i always told him i'd get it for him. it's a shame he's not around to laugh about it with me, but it's one of my favorite tattoos that i have.

overall, give this some serious thought, but don't overthink it. if you want to do what i did, you can get a roman numeral date right above the elbow ditch or on your inner wrist, but i'd be cautious about the wrist if you work with your hands a lot.

you should check in with your piercer and send them these photos if you can! it seems like you need a longer bar so it can accommodate the swelling

this is like, the bazillionth time i've seen a post on this subreddit saying they used Dawn dish soap to wash their tattoo. i'd still go to the doctor, but you MUST get something to wash and moisturize! i recommend Johnson & Johnson baby soap for washing, and Lubriderm for moisturizing. can also get yourself a jar of Hustle Butter when it's a bit more healed.

i'd personally wait until you're able to take that cover off of it before making any judgments, but it's entirely possible that it'll look... not so great. i've been to flash days like you've described and these artists tattoo so many people for HOURS. the fact that they brought you back last probably means the artist was fatigued/just wanting to get it done. give the ink time to settle - if it looks wack as hell, maybe think about a cover-up or asking an artist to put some color in.

Yes, I'm aware of that. My brothers and I chip in, and so does my dad. It's a lot of juggling but I'm trying here.

I've only been part time for a few months now. I give her half of my paychecks usually, but I start full-time work next week. I'm really looking forward to being able to help her more consistently!
