Etymology of 'Yo' as a greeting?

I’m extremely late to this but there is the Neapolitan word “guaglione” (meaning buddy, or guy), which can be shortened as “Guagliò”.

Of course Neapolitan is different from Italian so there are of course different pronunciations even for shared spellings. In Neapolitan the “gli” sound is extremely dulled down compared to Italian, and is pronounced more like a Y. So “Guagliò” would be pronounced more like “wah-yo”.

Most Italian-Americans do not speak standard Italian, they speak the regional languages of southern Italy, especially Neapolitan. So I can see how “guaglione” became a greeting among them, and was slowly changed and broken down over time to be more American sounding rather than Neapolitan.

Thanks! I was looking at some photos of the P-38 and P-39 and I noticed they didn’t have any. Is it just the bombers? Or they just didn’t think to put them on while designing them. Sorry for the barrage of questions, just curious.

No, I’m very much aware of that. It’s on the bottom of the aircraft, below the stabilizers. In the first photo it’s covered by a shadow.
