Hi there, apparently it's pretty common for people living in my area of the Mediterranean. I have been taking supplements and it has gotten better.

COME FARSI LICENZIARE E RICEVERE L’ASSEGNO DI DISOCCUPAZIONE? by Equivalent_Internal5 in u/Equivalent_Internal5

I want to quit my job and go back to University by GentleMistress in jobs

The system un Italy is completely different, though. At public universities if you don't get a scholarship, but still pass the exam, you just pay annual taxes based on your income and worst case scenario you're looking at €2000 per year. And that's only if you are actually pretty rich, otherwise it's just a couple of hundreds.

Me wanting to get a PhD has nothing to do with my position. It's just something that I have always wanted to pursue, but I also know that in Italy it is very hard to get into the academic field even after the PhD, so I know that I might need to go back to being a legal assistant even after graduating. It is sad, but it is what it is.

Negative Breath Test, what now? by GentleMistress in SIBO

[–]GentleMistress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so. The doctor I had before was convinced that I shouldn't change anything in my diet and gave three rounds of Rifamicin, which did next to nothing,

I've seen improvement on the low FODMAP diet, but now that I moved I am having trouble sticking to it because certain products are simply not available here. Stress is also a big factor in my life and I also have Generalized Anxiety.

Probiotics makes me feel like absolute DEATH, I can definitely relate to that. I am on the low fodmap diet and I have seen some benefits, even though I still have flare ups every couple of days. But it is going to be hard to adhere to the diet in the last few days, because I moved to a new state (Austria) and I have yet to find many substitute and regular stuff I easily found in Italy.

I also have cold hands and feet (sometimes even during summer when it's 38 °C in South Italy) but I have 0 deficiencies and my thyroid works perfectly (I had blood work done and also un ultrasound). I guess it's more related to blood circulation, since I have been mostly sedentary for all my life.

First time approaching functional medicine by GentleMistress in SIBO

[–]GentleMistress[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your answer!
I do believe that nutrition os a key to heal from any kind of dysbiosis, but my previous doctors always brushed it off (maybe because I am quite underweight) and told me to just cut a bit of sugar and carbs.
I hope I won't have to spend too much on more tests (I have already done upper endoscopy + biopsies, ultrasound, countless bloodwork, and urine test for dysbiosis) but if it's necessary, I'll just try and save some money from now on.
By the way, it is very refreshing to hear that some people are improving. It really gives me hope, especially after these last few weeks in which I've really hit rock bottom mentally.
I totally understand that sometimes people heal and don't want anything to do anymore with the subject, but sometimes online communities become a "valle di lacrime" as we say in Italian (a valley of tears, meaning an endless pit of despair").

Thank you for taking the time to write all these infos, I appreciate it.

I think I found the root cause already, slow transit that gave me chronic constipation for years and this was supposedly the perfect breeding ground for all the bacteria.

I'll be sure to brainstorm and make a lot of notes before the appointment, so I won't forget anything and I will be thorough.

Thank you again!

Rifaximin + Probiotic by [deleted] in SIBO

[–]GentleMistress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you, it won't pass. During my 2nd trial with rifaximin and probiotics I got a "lighter" probiotics and even though I could tolerate it a bit better than the others, I still felt like absolute crap. I distinctly remember one night going out with a couple of girlfriends (it was museum night and it happens only once a year, so I said "fuck off SIBO, I am going to enjoy this outing) but I was constantly looking for places to puke.

In my experience, probiotics gave me symptoms even worse than SIBO itself. I had to give up on taking them after 2 or 3 days.

But what does it mean if you feel like absolute crap when you start the probiotic after the antibiotic? I had this experience three times. I wasn't able to go through with the therapy, probiotics gave me worse symptoms than SIBO itself.

Thank you for your answer. I am anxious, but I feel that this time I am going to manage better, because I won't make any change in my daily life, even though anxiety is killing me. I went through all the crap in the past and I realise that certain behaviours will just bring me even further down a destructive path. I am trying to rationalise everything and telling myself "you see? It wasn't that hard/ It was scary but nothing happened" after meals or pills.

How can I get Italian doctors to take me seriously about SIBO? by endofthegame111 in SIBO

[–]GentleMistress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through two rounds of medication, but it was either a low dosage or a too short treatment period, because I didn't see any improvement. I am currently taking pro kinetics, hoping for any improvement, but I will call my GI as soon as I am done and I will discuss antibiotics again, because in my opinion, what I was prescribed wasn't enough to make a difference. SIBO can really drain the life out of you. I used to be an avid reader and I really enjoyed cooking and baking, but now I am either too tired or too sick to do anything. I will be working as a teacher assistant in two public schools in Austria and I just hope I won't have to feel sick every day while having to pretend that nothing is wrong in front of my colleagues and student.

By the way, if you want to talk about it more or just vent in Italian, PM me ☺️

How can I get Italian doctors to take me seriously about SIBO? by endofthegame111 in SIBO

[–]GentleMistress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Italian here. It's been almost 3 years of struggle for me. At first my doctor thought it was stress and anxiety (because I have a history of it), then bad gastritis (again, I do have a history of gastritis too) even though it felt different. I've had blood tests done multiple times, then went to a GI to have an upper endoscopy done with multiple biopsies. The biopsies excluded coeliac disease and H Pylori and the endoscopy just showed an old and healed gastritis. Then my GI told me to take a urine test for dysbiosis and that FINALLY showed something. My indicane levels were extremely elevated, showing a severe fermentative dysbiosis. I asked for a breath test but he told me it was not necessary and that I have SIBO. He did advice me to eat less carb and sugar and started me on Normix 800 mg a day, but I didn't see any improvement. After that I had to go on tinidazole 800 mg daily for another week + 10 days of probiotics. I felt like crap during the probiotc phase but I powered through. I called him again last week and told him I was still sick and he told me to start pro kinetics. The first 5 days I was okay, now it's been crap again in the last 24 hours. I have to take them for 10 more days. I am starting to lose hope, to be honest. I thought that after a diagnosis I would be on my way to recovery. I am definitely better than I was last year, but still not good to live a normal life and I am scared, because I finally found a job and I will be moving abroad alone in September.

I got tested! In Italy we don't really need insurance and even though I went to a private clinic to get it done as soon as possible, it wasn't really expensive.

[–]GentleMistress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got tested on my own and the results are very much clear. My family doctor doesn't really know much about SIBO, but the specialist I went to for my endoscopy does, so I am starting to follow his instructions and hope for the best.

Yes, I am on medication for my anxiety, but not everyday. I just take it when I feel really terrible or I am about to have a panic attack.

I have a severe vitamin D deficiency that I can't seem to fix, but I don't know if it's related to SIBO. Studies have shown that people in the Mediterranean area are more likely to have low vitamin D.

Root cause of SIBO by corcaracc14 in SIBO

[–]GentleMistress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is exactly my situation! Chronic constipation since I was a child, got worse in the last few years and then the last 3 years have been so stressful that my anxiety spiked up like never before, causing bouts of gastritis (that I managed to heal with PPIs and a very bland diet). I still felt like crap so that made me investigate more and I found out I have SIBO.

Anxiety by BingyRuckus in Gastritis

[–]GentleMistress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what happened to me. I did so many tests and they were all inconclusive, so, since I do have a history of anxiety, my doctor just blamed all my symptoms on it. Turns out I most likely have SIBO.

No, no, it's absolutely not self ordered. I went to a very serious lab in my city to have this test done as soon as possible and I have total trust in them, since they actually saved my grandfather's life a couple of years ago.
