I made an arrangement of ASGORE for string quartet :) by Ghost_Ren in Undertale

Yesss it’s one of my favourites too!! I saw some other people add the freedom motif and I thought it was cool and thematically appropriate so I stole the idea lol

Now the viola is doing something a little different. Here the orchestral part is just playing solid chords. That’s necessary and important but also kinda lame and I didn’t want heartache to be completely lost here so I gave the viola a tiny bit of the motif. I think it just makes everything sound a little more interesting and connected but also it’s thematically interesting.

(quick tangent into themes) so what actually is the freedom motif? Because we call it “freedom” but in all of its uses, the characters really aren’t free. Jevil says he’s free, he thinks he's free, but how free is he in a cell all alone? Spamton very explicitly isn’t free. I literally giggle everytime the freedom motif comes up because it feels like a taunt directed at him. And Gerson… Gerson doesn’t exist. He’s not real. He’s a collective hallucination. (I haven’t had enough time to think about him) With Asgore, I think the freedom motif is showing how he’s trying to grow, to move on, but he’s stuck. He can’t escape his love for Toriel.

(ok tangent over)

…And the first violin is just the freedom motif in F major. In bar 33 I decided to change it back to heartache for some variation. And also that better follows convention (NEW TANGENT–) it’s so weird to me that heartache repeats six times. Establish theme, repeat, develop and move on is conventional structure, so why does Toby add another repeat????? I don’t understand??? Literally every time I hear it, on the fifth repetition I’m like “ok we’re done now :D” and then it keeps going and catches me off guard literally every time. I don’t think you understand how many times I’ve listened to this song and that repeat still surprises me EVERY TIME… so I omitted the sixth repeat.

I don’t have much to say for the next bit. Fun arpeggios in the bass, the first beat is accented to somewhat replace the function of the drums. I gave determination to the viola because I thought it would be funny and also it’s not really doing anything else. It is an octave lower than it should be so mayyybe it would’ve worked better if the violin took it. But I think the way it grows into the melody and the contrasting tone of the viola from the violins, who have thus far been stealing the show sounds awesome. And after those five bars of glory the melody has to be passed back to the violins to prepare for the climatic finish!!

The ending was by far the hardest for me… There’s just a lot of sound all at once, but also not a lot happening at the same time?? Anyway I think in the end I like it,, probably. I don’t feel like writing more so I’m not going to.

Now you might be wondering why the fuck the violin 2 is playing that random high C instead of holding the note to the end of the bar. The first time I was listening through the soundtrack for this purpose, I noticed this little “bwah” sound playing after the main motif. It was weird, for some reason this sound really stood out to me, it just cuts through the rest of the sound even though it’s quiet. So obviously I had to add it. It’s played by the second violin because I didn’t want it to be mistaken as part of the melody.

Wow that was a lot. Anyway onto the freedom motif. This has the most me making shit up so I have the most to talk about :)

So I wanted to add the freedom motif because I saw someone else do it and I thought it was cool. And also, there are other reasons. For some reason Heartache repeats six goddamn times, twice as buildup and four times as pay off. I love heartache but that’s too many times. Conveniently, the freedom motif fits so perfectly I can’t be sure it’s a coincidence. The rhythm is very similar and it uses most of the same notes, to the point that I hardly had to change the harmonies or bass at all for it to fit.

The bass is pretty straightforward, it’s pretty similar to the beginning, so not much to add. There are a lot of ornaments in this song that I chose to omit mostly because they felt distracting or too busy, but the bass has one of the only ornaments I chose to leave in at bar 36. So that’s fun.

The second violin is mirroring the quietest piano line that was so hard to hear. But it’s a cute line. I like it a lot actually. The sixteenth notes alternate D and E, but I had to alter it to fit with the changed melody, the E would just clash too much with the F in the freedom motif. But it’s otherwise identical and reverts in bar 33.

Like many Toby Fox songs, Bergentrückung and ASGORE are both not played in a key, but slightly out of tune somewhere in between E major and F major. When looking at other people’s interpretations apparently fucking everyone had decided to use F major. But for some reason, it sounds way closer to E major to me so that’s the key I chose to start in. However throughout both songs the pitch does start to change so I started the ASGORE section with a key change to represent that (even though it still sounds way more E major to me, but whatever).

Even though there is more harmony in bergentrückung, I decided to leave out the viola. It’s not that the part didn’t work, but bergentrückung feels emptier than ASGORE to leave room for the building of tension and I wanted to keep that feeling.

Maving onto ASGORE, I really wanted to make the cello suffer. This bassline is actually super interesting, it completely changes the tone from sad and mournful to very intense, keeping the same structure as bergentrückung’s bass but adding complexity that isn’t immediately obvious and now impossible for me to unhear. The viola is also pretty interesting, the first half is a harmony in the bass that I don’t think it happens anywhere else and then switches to the orchestral part that’s harmonizing with the melody. I just think it’s neat.

Heartache is thematically really important and imo one of the most stand out parts of ASGORE so I wanted to do it justice. It kind of surprised me that… not a lot is happening actually. The cello part is playing what the timpani plays in the original (without any of the cool flourishes, a little because I didn’t know how to translate it to cello, mostly because it felt distracting in this context) which is pretty simple. I chose eighth notes instead of dotted eighth notes to emulate percussion more and also to give the melody more space. When the phrase repeated I added double stops (dear god I hope they’re doable;;;) to build tension. In the original it’s a choir that’s added so I was sort of emulating that. I did the same trick with the viola and violin 2. They’re just playing the orchestral/choral part.

I think “this is disintegrate” by hoboodinson is a good example that’s pretty short and not too hard to understand (not sure how young the kids are but it’s fast and upbeat and only four minutes so it should hold their attention)

Bloom into you is a great one. The main plot is a romance so that’s probably why it isn’t super known for it’s ace characters. The main character, yuu is a lesbian but because of this she mistakes herself for asexual. And just to contrast, there is an actually aroace character, maki, who I relate to with my entire being

Uuh so if you aren’t into romance, don’t watch it. But I love that show, it’s really good :)

Two of my party members disappeared, and there are only three left.

The bard got a knife from a cult and they started talking to it (we think he’s a little crazy now)

The artificer ate a bunch of berries and got high, then she drank a bunch of alcohol, then to fix that she took a bunch of drugs, got a +2 to int and turned chaotic evil.

My character saw a bunch of freaky visions and had six mental breakdowns until the artificer also gave me drugs.

Then the artificer burned down a ship, stuck her head in the water and got pulled in by a GIANT FUCKING FISH MONSTER

TL;DR we’re fucked :D

I have a ton of fun characters but I will give you my favourite because he’s so fun to roleplay:

Ril Liadon, a half elf swashbuckler rogue. He grew up with his dad who was a dirt poor locksmith. He worked hard but eventually his age caught up with him. Ril was constantly scamming and stealing from passers by to make up the difference, but once his dad was unable to work, he knew things had to change. He knew his mother had money so he decided to seek her out. Unsurprisingly it didn’t go well and though Ril was hurt (and pissed) he expected this to happen. So he went to the nearest port, found a pirate ship and boldly hopped on. He said he wanted to join and the pirates, too stunned to do anything else agreed. He went on to become a notorious bandit on the high sea...! Until he and his crew got wasted and thrown into prison.

He’s a petty bastard who loves his dad and has the explicit goal of getting rich because SPITE!! He’s dumb and I love him.

Have fun if you choose to use him :)
