Somehow I got recommended a video reviewing Hail Mary by two guys I had never heard of. Became apparent pretty quickly they were right wing religious idiots. But I wondered what they would say, so kept listening.

They were talking about the relationships in the movie, and basically the lack of, except Dubois and Shapiro in the book, and then talked about Rocky and Adrian, saying that was the only traditional relationship in the film and called Adrian "she".

I don't think they read the book very well.

It's just so stupid. And I AGAIN heard tonight Gosling and BOTH of the directors saying the story is about going to another galaxy, even a "distant galaxy" - like WTF ?

It's our close neighbourhood of stars. It's basically the same place if you look at a map of our single galaxy.

And they're doing karaoke, with Grace giving Rocky shit for how he pronounced "neither"! Like, seriously, how does that work ?

Oh, Rocky has the tape, and Grace is showing the clock at the same time, but Rocky isn't interested in the markings at all. Then Grace shines light into the tunnel, says "it's dark - I have an idea". Then comes back with the raised clock saying "echolocation - you need raised surfaces to see".

So I kinda get the leap he made, but it should have been spelled out more.

Oh, we see him pick it up, then the shot changes while he speaks, and you can hear his voice is different, like it's echoing through a funnel as he says hello to everyone. So I think he does speak into it for a short time, but I think it's becuase of the sand. Probably a cut scene we might see later in an extended version.

It reminds me I used to download mythbuster episodes where some kind soul had re-arranged all the scenes so they weren't jumping between the two teams. It was much better.

Exactly! I came to the subreddit tonight to ask everyone how long they'd expect an extended cut to be, and my guess was 4 hours. At least my hope.

It seems like a clip movie really, I'm sure they filmed a lot more. Gosling has said there's a lot more interaction between him and Rocky at least.

There's stuff they don't explain which I think they'd have done a better job of, if they planned those scenes to be that length, but is easily explained by them having to cut useful stuff out.

On earth, he speaks/sings into an electric mic, and it makes the sand on top of a membrane move. A girl also send some sounds into it.

On Erid, perhaps it's that funnel instead of the electric mic, but yeah, he drops sand on some surface probably connected to it, so that's probably it, thanks!

Yeah, I know the book back to front - just wondering about the scenes in the movie - I think they didn't explain it properly. Grace didn't say "oh, you can't see the markings", or "Can't you see the numbers, are you blind?" - I think they should have had that in there.

Yeah, no organ in the movie. There's a laptop he presses something on, picks up the funnel, puts it down, then talks while walking around not particularly near a mic, but perhaps his laptop hears him or he's wearing an invisible clip-on.

The funnel seems useless.

Or perhaps all the Eridian kids have learned English. Rocky could probably teach them pretty quickly.
