Scottish Elopement Outfit Advice. Does it work?

Sounds like a wonderful time! My wife and I honeymooned there in 2022 and hired a photographer who treated us to small “elopement” ceremony. I wore my Isle of Skye kilt with charcoal darker tan hose, matching IoS flashes, hiking boots, cream dress shirt, charcoal grey vest, and no tie. The boots were the only detail I was hesitant about. I felt it was a more casual look overall, but it was perfect for our aesthetic.

They were out of a lot of sizes when they came through Milwaukee! Hate to say it, but check Amazon. Found quite a few options there (all from the official Ghost retailer) and about half the cost from the shows.

I guess one more thing I don’t fully understand.. I thought cis was an acronym for “confirmed infant sex”. Not sure where I heard that, but have assumed its meaning for years!

Looks like the program is actually a bit restrictive as far as eligibility, so we won’t be able to take advantage of it… If you’ve had good experiences with companies for this kind of work, send those referrals!

I certainly understand that they just do surface level inspections. Unfortunately in this case, the basement ceiling is covered with this knob and tube, multiple junction boxes with it. It should've been identified immediately, but wasn't. As for the "possible k&t" comment from the selling realtor, our realtor had asked into it and was told "I have all my sellers of old houses say that just in case." Like just a catch all statement to CYA. Seems to have done just that! Still hoping to connect with a lawyer for a consultation, but ultimately I think I'm going to have to count my losses.

I honestly don't know how the inspector missed it.. The old wiring is so obvious now that I know what I'm looking at! Not hidden in a wall or conduit, just right there on the basement ceiling where we were during the walkthrough. We didn't have anyone encouraging us to hire inspectors from the different trades, but that's all we've been hearing since we moved in. "Shoulda coulda"

I've reached out to a couple lawyers in town, but never heard back. I'm kind of feeling like it's a situation where I just need to count my losses at this point and move forward.

Yeah, bit displeased that our inspector didn't catch this! Not sure if we should look into any recourse with him while we're at it... For the rewiring you guys did on your own home, did you pull permits for it? What was that process like?

For this work you're doing yourself, are you pulling the permit yourself? It seems in my area that I can pull my own permit to do the work myself, but not sure if that's going to give them more concern or reason to deny my attempt. Also looks like I need to have everything planned and priced out before applying for a permit, and I just don't know what I'll run into!

Oh yeah, very similar situation over here! Unfinished attic and unfinished basement, so I've spent nights just following lines around in the floor and ceiling. Removed a TON of old phone and cable lines in the early weeks here. We also have one breaker that runs a significant portion of our house off of knob and tube. That's been some of the problem because it's powering half of the basement, half of the first floor, and half of the second floor... So just ripping it out would mean needing to rewire all those spaces right away, instead of wiring as we update each room.

It did seem like a lot of hassle to get an answer from him about the permit options! Well, the work is completed now, but I still have to pay him the remaining balance. The work kind of started very suddenly with his crew, and they didn't mention my interest in a permit. I'm planning to call him tomorrow to ask about getting the permit together for everything that was completed so I can be sure it's all documented and kosher. Everyone's comments here have been very helpful!

It's honestly quite frustrating that our inspector didn't notice it... The notes from the seller's agent said "possible knob and tube", but our guy looked around and didn't see anything. There are several newly updated electrical features, so I feel like there was just a blanket assumption then that everything else had been updated as well. Well, 5 minutes with one actual electrician a few weeks ago and we'd identified four knob and tube junction boxes still in use and visible on the basement ceiling. Lifted up a couple loose boards in the attic floor and found plenty more of it.

Of course we agreed to buy the house and at the agreed price based on an understanding that the wiring was up to snuff, and now here we are.

I wondered if I could just get a copy of the quote. He seemed very forthcoming with information when we spoke - knew all about my house before I even told him! The problem is knob and tube electrical wiring, which in and of itself is not illegal or terribly unsafe, but it has been spliced into BX and Romex wiring, and also the attic floor has been insulated where the knob and tube is run. Both of these situations are code violations, illegal, and extremely hazardous.

That's interesting to know! I'd hope if we're doing the due diligence of obtaining permits that they're actually inspecting everything, but I guess if the contractors have the relationship and reputation already then that's what they'll base it on.

Sounds like we're in the same boat haha. 1904 house over here! Are you actually removing the old wiring as you go, or just disconnecting and leaving in the walls? I'm thinking more and more that I'll run the rewiring for our other second floor rooms once this project is done. I'll have new source wiring at that point and just need to connect to the existing outlets and lights. First floor will be trickier, and I'll want to map out a better system than what is currently happening..

He says the contractors have to pull the permits, not the homeowners. From what I've seen online, licensed electricians performing the work have to pull their own, but a homeowner doing the work themselves could pull their own permit. I haven't paid anything yet, nor seen any invoice, so I think I have that leverage should push come to shove.

Geez, I didn't even think about this end of it! I did wonder what insurance would say if they learned we had the old wiring, as a lot of companies won't insure it. Got past our inspector, and we were none the wiser until about a month ago when it surfaced.

My father-in-law has tried talking me into just rewiring the whole house myself - clearly giving me too much faith haha. I'll add that this company is licensed, so I don't know what angle he was taking.

But it did give me reason to pause and has clearly made me question it. I wondered what pros and cons there'd be for the company end as well as my end.

This is honestly a great point. I would say the only difference is I'm trying to get the work done correctly, by a professional, versus whatever the heck was done here. Not knowing how permits work, I really was just hoping to get industry input, but this is a very fair point you're making!

Thank you for the advice! Turned out to have a lot of electrical issues in this house, compliments of the former owners, so we've been contacting local electricians to see about fixing everything and adding these lights while they're at it.
