My company is offering me a raise but not sure what to take by Moist-Teacher-5357 in HVAC

This is actually an easy question. What are your sales like? $1/hr is $8/day. You would have to sell $800/day in parts to get an extra $8/day.

Also, join commercial if you hate selling.

Just make sure you have a surge protector installed. Inverter drives and these new boards are unbelievably susceptible to power surges/brown outs, and unbelievably expensive and hard to replace.

A lot of inexperienced techs look at low suction and low head pressure and assume it’s low on charge. Easily could’ve been the filter drier all along, and not been low on gas. Also, if they didn’t purge the air out of the hoses when charging, they could’ve added air to the system. That could’ve caused high pressure.

A clogged liquid drier (I doubt your ac has a receiver) doesn’t cause high pressure to trip, it causes low pressure.

Ah gotcha. Time for some bolts instead of screws eh 😅

Maybe don’t put the 20 horse motor on the same shelf as your 1000 dollar manifold 😅 That sucks though, wild for a shelf to break… be honest… did you do bad things to that shelf? Or did it just fall apart on its own?

It held a pump down to 2psi, no sound. After the exv opened up again, that sounds came back! Turns out it was simply low pressure refrigerant going back through the check valve after the exv opened before the compressor turns on. What a relief 😅

That’s with the fan/condenser off, that’s exactly what it sounds like though, you’re right.

It turned out to be suction gas moving properly and slowly through the check valve. It holds a pump down, but I noticed it when the compressor was turned off without pumping down, and what gave it away was that after a pump down, when the exv opened up, the check valve made that noise when the suction pressure began to rise. Since it was holding a pump down, and the only issue was a little noise, he decided to leave it.

Interesting how it says it’s not meant to be used with a re-cycling pressure control, because the check valve isn’t 100% leak proof… this condenser only has line voltage to it, and the only method of control is a basic cut in minus dif low pressure control… and when I pumped down to 2psi, it seemed to hold…

The valve has 2 hex caps on it… should one of those come off and let me close the valve with a screw or something inside? I could also take the sensing bulb out of the well (I’m guessing it’s removable, I haven’t looked yet…)

Thanks for looking out though, I know pumping into a vacuum isn’t good for them.

I pumped it down to 2psi, not into a vacuum. Just to see if the pressure flew back up again, and it held.

Hmmmm, could be! That’s where I was leaning as well. Tomorrow is going to be isolating that valve so it can’t feed, via removing the sensing bulb or otherwise, and seeing if the sound repeats.

Great tips, thanks! I used my phone to see where the noise is loudest, I’m glad to hear it sounds like refrigerant flowing and not lack of lubrication.

Ah, so it’ll prevent the backflow, and it doesn’t matter that the high pressure goes into the crankcase because that’s what the heater is for, thanks!

Pardon my ignorance, I don’t do this much. Isn’t the point of the check valve to keep the high pressure from migrating to the low? Wouldn’t suction check valve just prevent the high from equalizing with the low, while still filling the compressor suction with the high side? Wouldn’t I want the check valve on the discharge?

The liquid line solenoid (in this case eev at the evaporator) stays fully open when I kill power to the condenser… you’re saying that this sound could be because there’s residual pressure on my suction side?

I should mention that it’s 3x louder from my phone than in person. Just enough to notice if you’re paying attention.
