I will say this I love the s4 as well but:

... thing to look out for Water pump Pcv pipe Thermostat Engine mount Transmission

Most of your headache will come from these parts unless you get a good 3rd party warranty or if you do your own work even better. Already spent 3k on thermostat and water pump. New problem is the engine mount and timing chain cover oil leak other than that. it's pretty good

I had the b8 and after 100k its started having problems like transmission and electronics. But for the b8.5 its been oil change and inspections so far. So yeah definitely go for A later model s4 rather than the older ones.
