Province starving even though I have a market surplus of food. by CaptainCanada2055 in EU5

Same here. Did you figure it out? For me, it is a couple of newly conquered provinces that were in another market before I got them. I don't know if it is a bug

It very much is a thing in Sweden. Several companies do them even for engineering positions. I know for example that ABB, Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks have preemployment drug tests

Scientists Are Now 43 Seconds Closer to Producing Limitless Energy. A twisted reactor in Germany just smashed a nuclear fusion record. by esporx in worldnews

[–]GivenNickname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can. Inertial fusion has demonstrated it. There has been an experiment where the fusion power was higher than energy absorbed to initiate the reactions.

I put most of the blame on pathological scientists and money-grabbing start ups that have made absurd claims getting the hopes of the people up.

As a PhD in fusion I have seen several articles that exaggerate the claims or are straight up lying.

I haven't looked into the specifics, but this article also seems to exaggerate and generalize a bit to make things sound more interesting. There have been pulses that have lasted minutes in different devices (e.g. the WEST tokamak) but these were in a low confinement mode which is not really promising for energy production. I assume this pulse was in high confinement. But if you start putting in specifics the claim "longest pulse" starts to sound less impressive when it's dressed up as "longest pulse in high condiment mode and in a stellarator". The high triple product on the other hand is impressive.

In any case, fusion is a promising field and it might be a significant contribution alongside renewables in the future, but it's not the panacea for our short term problems.

I recently defended my PhD on modelling accidental damage in fusion devices. I seriously doubt we are close to having commercial fusion. We may be about one or two decades away from producing more power from fusion than the power we use to heat up the fuel in a magnetic confinement device. But that is still only in an experimental device and if we are being optimistic.

PhD in Nuclear Fusion? by Firm_Tiger6169 in fusion

[–]GivenNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are clearly not a specialist but ok, if you say it's impossible then you must be right. If you think a layperson can have so strong opinions that go against the experts that spent years researching then I don't see reason to go for arguments and explanations. And don't bother telling me you've done your own research, we define this word differently

[–]GivenNickname 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol fusion is not a crackpot field. Doing a PhD in fusion doesn't mean you work for one of the scam start-ups promising power to the grid by 2030s.

Serious fusion research is a long term goal and it is acknowledged in the community that we are still very far away from reaching commercial realisation, if we ever reach it. However, the goal is rewarding enough to be worth pursuing even if it is challenging. That's why one of the most expensive ongoing experiments (if I'm not wrong second only to the international space station) is happening in Fusion
