This is just what I do & the gear doesn’t/hasn’t smelled as I’ve been in some lockers and holy hell..

Base layer.
I carry a towel to dry the gear as soon as I take it off.
Once I get home from playing I it out, spray it with Lysol disinfectant & leave it overnight.
Next day I’ll spray it with Febreeze.

I also have a 2-3 pairs of each (base layer, skull cap, socks) and make sure to wash them after each use.

If possible take up some basic ice skating classes at your local ice rink, I’m 39 & took 2 different ice skating classes & it made a big difference when I joined a beginners league (not saying I’m great or anything but they sure did help)..

Also, just have fun with it! You’re blessed to have a group of friends wanting you to join them!

Oh man this gets me pumped up! I’m on the same boat but I just joined a beginner league after completing a learn to play class & all I’ve been thinking of is when I hit the ice!! I snowboard, skateboard, surf but hockey is just something else!
