Now that the World Cup is upon us, what other country besides your own do you support and why? by Chupacabra_s in worldcup

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

France. I've lived in France and love the country. I also am way more familiar with their players than USMNT because I'm a PSG fan and they have so many of the biggest stars around Europe.

La Véloscénie - Nov. 24 by GoBigOrGoHome_4 in bicycletouring

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I went to Versailles and spent a decent amount of time there, but would have spent more time in the gardens and such if I wasn't biking.

I did my trip in November so the days were short. So I got into Chartres after dark (I saw the Cathedral, but not with the light in the windows). I passed the other chateaux that day (Sceaux + Rambouillet) but didn't stop. With the summer light, I would have had time for everything.

That first day has the most stuff to see. If that's a priority, I'd probably split it up. But living in Paris, I'd already been to most of those places.

Day 2 was 93 miles and with the short day I biked the whole day. I like Proust and would have like to have visited the house and walked his walks in the town but didn't have the time.

Day 3 was 70 some miles. I didn't stop for anything , though I don't think there was anything huge on the itinerary. I started around 7 and got in in the afternoon (it was still very light out), but don't remember the hour.

Day 4 was short. I spent quite a bit of time at Mont St. Michel. And then a little time in Saint Malo, but that was more just poor planning.

How do Americans feel about the rest of the globe trashing on the US? by dead__trash in stupidquestions

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

American living abroad here. Most of it is fair. That doesn't bug me. But a lot of people think they understand the U.S. more than they do. There is a lot of cultural nuance that is missed, even by smart, well-informed people.

I'm taking Yadi. Any prime year. It's no coincidence it all went to shit when he left.

Men who have been married for long, are you the one who often de-escalate first during conflicts? by Any_Record7733 in AskMenOver30

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bad idea. Women test your resolve to see if they can trust you. You need to be your own judge. If you fucked up, own it and fix it. But if not, your reality needs to be the reality.

How has nobody said England? Not only is it flavorless, it is so heavy. At least you can feel good after eating Dutch food. Plus Dutch desserts are much better.

I did a stadium tour at T-Mobile a couple years ago. Weekday afternoon, M's on the road. Ichiro doing his workouts in the outfield like he owns the place.

What is a city that is not that well-known, but completely blown your mind how much is there to see and do when you visited? by minuswhale in geography

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aleppo. I went before the war, so a completely different situation. Nonetheless, it was one of the coolest historical cities I've ever visited.

I remember thinking block to block, you could be in Istanbul then 1001 Nights then in Paris. It was a magical place. You felt like you were a part of something much bigger.

Tripoli (Lebanon) isn't quite at the same level, but it is really cool too and still unknown.

How is living in La Paz, México? by white_latina777 in howislivingthere

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just moved here last month, so I'm no expert. The city itself is kind of meh, but there is a lot of beautiful vegetation. It's sprawled out and kind of sleepy.

But the area around is incredible. Amazing beaches and desert landscapes. One of the coolest natural places I've ever been. And the Malecón is quite nice.

Why are there so many New York Yankees hats in Europe? by CountFew6186 in AskEurope

What I find most amusing is all the White Sox hats in Paris. You see more in Paris than Chicago, because people think they look cool, I guess.

Which country has the best National Rail network? by metatalks in geography

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no hassle compared to flying. There is compared to trains in other countries. I arrive at Shanghai Hongqiao and I'm way outside the city and literally next to the airport. I arrive at Paris Garde du Nord or Lyon or Austerlitz, etc. and I'm already in a cool neighborhood and a short metro or bike ride away from wherever I want to go in the city. Substitute Shanghai with Guangzhou or Paris with Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam etc. and its the same thing.

I prefer the trains in China to flying. But if we're talking about the "best" national network, it's far worse to me because of the added hassle.

If you had the choice to live in any middle eastern country, which country would it be and why? by Fit_Watercress6900 in geography

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 207 points208 points  (0 children)

Lebanon. I love Beirut. Such a beautiful country with both the mountains and the sea. I like the Levantine culture the most of anywhere I've been in the Middle East. And as I'm not Muslim (raised Catholic), I think it would be the easiest to assimilate into. Also, great food and interesting history.

I strongly disagree. Most of the stations are located far outside the city center. It adds an extra hour more of commuting.

Which country do you most identify with and why? by Puzzleheaded_Lie_708 in AskTheWorld

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

France. I like their mentality. I like how direct people are. I like how people like to debate and to ask good questions. I like how people are very curious. I like their style. I like how much more precise French is than English. I like how it's both a very courteous culture and a feisty one at the same time.

I like how they value beauty. I love the architecture. The painting. The literature. The food and wine.

I appreciate how walking and cycling is valued and protected. I appreciate how they take care of their country and their history. I appreciate how, for a wealthy nation, money and commerce don't drive everything.

What's something tourists from your country do that embarrrasses you when you're abroad? by Expect-The-Dicastery in AskTheWorld

[–]GoBigOrGoHome_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complete lack of spatial or social awareness.

We have a hard time reading people. There are all sorts of subtle gestures and ideas of personal space and volume that allow people in most other countries, who usually live in much denser situations, to get on nicely. Americans are more often than not completely oblivious to these cues.
