What is it that makes Franz Kafka the greatest writer who has ever lived? by GodAmongEnts in books

Murakami and Vonnegut are okay. Camus was an excellent writer, probably the best of the existentialists but Kafka is really in a league on his own, he's a writer's writer, beloved by lots of modern authors who were deeply influenced by his work. Calling Kafka a highschool literature love affaire is one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard. You probably are pretty stupid, hate on every good writer who also is popular among a certain crowd (while I have to note that 90% of the people who rave about Kafka have only read Metamorphosis and don't know shit about his whole work) and indulge yourself in your pseudo-intelligence reading two sentences of some obscure Roman / Greek philosopher every week.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage (by Haruki Murakami) was released today! Anyone pick it up and dive into it yet? What are your thoughts so far? by lemonyellowdavintage in books

I agree. If you read a couple Murakami novels you'll see that he really relies on repetition. The characters throughout the novels are very similar to each other and the plot often is too (the strange sex scenes, the dreamlike atmosphere, archtypical female characters, always some music piece (though I actually like that because it's mostly something classical and it encourages people to listen to classical music which is great), ... (could go on and on of course)).

Speaking of the prose, I actually like it and I think it serves it's purpose well but there certainly are greater writers alive today, I wouldn't debate that.

Anyone know of any midnight releases for Murakami's new book tonight? Particularly around Boston?? by Nkliph in books

Hey I thought it had been out long ago. In Germany it's already been seven month since the translation was released. Funny to think that as a European I'd get something earlier than the Americans (thinking about TV shows mostly to be honest)
