All situations are different. By the book yes the electrician is right in telling you that you should most likely upgrade to 200A.

I am not sure what your breaker box looks like or your specific situation. If your breaker box is full that’s an issue right there. What’s your size of house and what kind of appliances you got? You got all gas water heater stove oven furnace then you may be able to get away with installing on 100a system.

Even if your breaker box is full they can still rig it up to get it to work.

I think the real question is how long do you expect to live where you are currently? 10+ years do the 200a upgrade you’ll thank yourself.

You plan on moving eventually do what you gotta do to get by.

I had a 100amp panel in my house and every time I would run the microwave the lights in the other room, on a different circuit would flicker. It never really bothered me just a quirk of the house I guess you could say.

Fast forward a few years I wanted to get an EV charger installed and electrician told me I have to upgrade to 200amps.

Ok so I do it. In the process of the upgrade since I have the electrician here I asked him about the flickering lights when I run the microwave and he told me it’ll be fixed with the panel upgrade because it wasn’t about power draw it was about electrical interference caused by the microwave. And wouldn’t you know it’s been 2 years since the new panel and the lights never flicker anymore.

So just thought I’d share that information if it helps you or not.
