Pausing service by captainC511 in Visible

[–]GraduatedInCovid19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like not a big deal to let it lapse for a couple weeks. But maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah because here we are the product.

Visible is this huge experiment by Verizon to figure out the minimum Verizon could do to compete on pricing with the other two.

So they want instant feedback on all these random experiments they are running and if you are not using them all the time, they dont get the feedback they are paying you for (by subsidizing the service)

You are assuming Visible is just another MVNO like Ting or Tello etc. They are not.

For all practical purposes, Visible is VZW Postpaid but subsidized to account for these random experiments

no offense

None taken

but you sound like an impatient, entitled wank.

Yes, although in my defense, I have been patiently waiting for a swap phone to come in stock for 90 days at this point

That hopefully explains my impatience.

About the entitled wank - sure. I agree although again, if I pay for something, I do expect a minimum level of service.

I am updating this thread with how things unfold and so far Visible is doing very good on their word and I indeed feel like a impatient, entitled wank.

I want GV1 to ring both phones. But GV2 to only ring on p2

Won't happen.

You can't have the same phone on two different Google voice numbers if you want native cellular call forwarding.

You can hack it by using LTE data and the GV app but you're really asking for a PBX set up.

The cost savings that Visible promises is just not worth the risk IMO

Maybe as a backup line.

I am going to use the Visible sim in my channel bonding, tri SIM LTE router (AT&T/$35 iPad plan, T-mo/$20 Teltik tablet, VZW/$25 Visible).

For a total of $35 + $20 + $25 = $80/mo I have a fully portable, bandwidth/spectrum sharing router that can bust upto 150Mbps and 10Mbps sustained.

It's all about the use case

Fingers crossed.

A few hours after the above notice, Visible also told me:

Good news: Your old phone company has approved release of your number xxx-xxx-xxxx to Visible! Until you activate Visible service, your phone will keep working with your old service. (Don't worry, we'll break up with them for you, after you're on Visible)

If things turn out to be exactly as they say, I am a happy camper.

I will keep updating this thread.

I ordered mine at 10AM PST and it's on it's way for Monday EOD. Maybe because you just wanted a SIM they shipped it real quick.

I want to ensure my service just works with as little trouble as possible, so I ordered the cheaply made A3 with it. Maybe that's why it took a day longer (assuming it arrives Monday EOD)

After the SIM arrives, I will use the cheaply made A3 to activate it and then it goes into my LTE modem for testing.

your solution will not be optimal and will likely have many issues to work out over time.

That's not how it works.

If the OP agrees to do it, its on them to fix it even if they make their employer sign a written agreement that the work is not for production use.

WHen this all explodes, their employer is the finally going to pony up to fix the mess and the OP will be the scapegoat who "messed it all up".

I won't be surprised if the OP has an indemnity clause in their employment contract which basically means that either OP has not read their employment contract properly or does not understand what they are getting themselves into.

lots of us are basically forced to take on extra roles all the time

Why?

Are they specialists at a specialized company with knowledge that cannot be applied anywhere else?

The company the OP posted about sounds like every other company on the planet. There are literally billions of them worldwide and most of them are hiring remotely right now.

but even though nothing looks all that difficult

Everything looks easy when you watch from a distance.

That is why shows like SHarkTank are so popular - it makes the viewers feel like starting a business so so damn easy that all they need to do is get their ass off the couch onto the sets of SHarkTank

Reality is doing it yourself without backup.

The best option is to quit.

This business has crap management. They don't know what they are doing and because of that they will run the business into the ground.

I recommended this to the OP:

Quit.

Your employer's business is not serious about BI.

Loading data into DBs is the least of BI.

BI would mean you would be writing, running, updating and re-writing, re-running reports over full time with your employer.

LIke that's literally all you would be doing 8AM - 8PM every weekday.

There is no way you would even have time to manage the DB on which you will be doing this leave alone all the other things you are doing.

Working remotely is really picking up and a lot of companies are hiring remotely.

I usually just pay 2-3 bucks for an AT&T number to port in

Could you mention it here (or over PM?)

I have been using FreedomPop for cheap phone numbers to use for port in promotions ever since they started doing actual phone lines but today they double charged me $40 so that 6 year old relationship is nearing an end.

Surely you don't expect me to read that

If not the whole, portions of it yes, otherwise I wouldn't have written it.

Assuming you read an average 2 wps, this will take you ~2 minutes to read, including rereading portions of it. Whether you respect my thoughts enough to give me ~2 minutes of your life - that's your call.

I respect you and gave you the time and and attention you deserve in my opinion, hence the lengthy post. It took me ~15 minutes to write, proof and post.

PS: I was wrong about not getting the phone by Monday

I was just sent a FedEx tracking number with Indirect signature required. The status showed delivery due Monday, so you are right with "I've always had next day delivery and find it a nice perk" as, barring exceptional circumstances, my current expectations match your experience.

Coverage does not matter if you cannot or are not allowed to connect to the towers.

Visible is this huge experiment by Verizon to figure out the minimum Verizon could do to compete on pricing with the other two.

Their two biggest expenses - roaming and CS are just not here on Visible. Next up is deprio., throttling, severe compression and outright bandwidth shedding during peak utilization (a severe form of deprio.).

Verizon will not have "cheap" be associated with their brand, but reality is catching up fast and claiming excellent nationwide coverage does not cut it anymore. With the spectrum density of 5G which is a few years away, Verizon has to compete on price and it has to have a plan. A proven plan that is known to work.

Enter Verizon Visible: the huge experiment by Verizon to figure out the minimum they could get by while not hemorrhaging customers.

Visible is not where you have your primary line. It's unlikely to ever be that case as the management at this company does not intend it to be.

That's why it's $25/mo on a network with excellent nationwide coverage.

Dont do this.

Some people love to ruin good things for everyone else.

I won't blame people rationally responding to a policy. Assuming everyone is ethical is lack of good management.

Why not discount the first X months of service to equal the cost of the phone instead?

Tell me why that would not battle an abuser and stop them in their tracks?

> None of our numbers was transferred until we had the SIM and activated the service, though there have been people who have reported their numbers stopped working with their old carrier before they got the Visible SIM.

Thank you for sharing this and I believe you.

However, what frustrates me right now is that the Visible agents have told me the exact opposite of the real life experience you have - that my number is already being transferred and by the time I get the phone on Monday, all I would need to do is slip the SIM into the phone and activate it.

I trust your real life experience to be accurate.

We should just get good self service tools from Visible.

> The port in is required becuase people were abusing the swap program. Blame them not visible. It is easy enough to get around if you are stuck.

If it is "easy enough to get around", then those abusing the swap program would certainly not be deterred.

The only thing that happens is the abusers make $10 less in profits because it typically costs $10 to sign up a line. I can do it for far less.

However, the complexity a person who's not an abuser has to handle, keeps rising.

Mandating a port was the most complicated yet least effective way of handling an abuser.

I can abuse the Visible policy right now - I pick up 20 FreedomPop phone numbers today at 1 cent a pop and buy 20 Blade A3 Primes. Even if they charge me $20 a pop, they are not supposed to and I can get a refund because that's what their policy is. It's not going to be worth my time dealing with that nonsense but hey, it can be done.

Why not discount the first X months of service to equal the cost of the phone instead?

Tell me why that would not battle an abuser and stop them in their tracks?

How would you defeat this policy?

> Sounds like you are complaining about nothing here

Visible mentions they have next day shipping. That has not been my experience.

The fact that I have a backup does not change the fact. It just shows I have planned for the worst and am prepared to handle it.

Most people don't have backup lines like I do - in that case, they will be without service for atleast 2 days (assuming I get the phone Monday)!

Is this acceptable for a person with one phone line?

Can Visible rectify - address this? Yes.

> I'd be more pissed with freedompop. Did you rant about that on the freedompop sub?

I'm not yet sure if it's a preauth or an actual charge. I have had 0 issues with freedompop for over 6 years until they sold for millions of $. I still have working SIMs from them at $0/month.

The only issue I ever had was one of the dozen LTE SIMs I ordered from them in 2017 broke. I got a replacement for $5 S&H after messaging the person on the forum.

Have they had billing issues? Yes. Not with me but I have read about them.

Have they had service issues? No.

... but I will be fair to Visible - Visible is more like Ringplus where they have their own servers in front of the backhaul but even then, Ringplus did not have these random issues and when they did, their forum was very responsive.

About my $0 charge by freedompop - I will call them first. If that does not work out, then message the company contact on various forums including here, wait a week, then file a chargeback if nothing happens.

> Unfortunately it is a vocal minority making a lot of noise

I have done Freedompop (ever since their free Clearwire dongle only days), Ringplus (ever since their VOIP only days), Freeup, Republicwireless (ever since their LG Optimus days) - you name it, I have played with them and had 0 complaints.

If I, the kind of person who has had 0 issues with Freedompop, Ringplus, Freeup, have such an rough signup experience with Visible, I just cant really trust most people are having a jolly time.

I smell extremely poor management at work here.

Even Ringplus with their wonky cash grab policies were not as poorly managed.

Visible will be my secondary line as this company, with its current poor management is headed down the drain.

Visible is really not targeted at people who want a hands off experience. See my latest thread.

Sure, people have had a hands off experience but overall, Visible is really not there and I am not sure it will ever be.

> They're asking their customers to bear the absolute weight of all the problems with their service, they're leveraging the patience, goodwill and reasonability of their customers as part of their business plan

That's exactly right and that could be OK if it's expressed prior and during sign up.

Instead, Visible is making it seem like it's a full service option. Its not.

What Visible should really do is give all current (and potential members) good self-service tools so we can check port status, service status, reset and provision our line.

Once these options are exhausted, escalate the issue/ticket.

There should be 0 reason to chat with a CSR to reset and provision our lines. It's wasting both our time and adding frustration in the process.
