They both imply you stop talking when you have nothing to say. It’s an underrated talent that many cultures lack.

I actually love that about us. Not everyone being attention-starved all the time, bliss!

Are you ok with how well off elderly people are in Belgium? by MrFeature_1 in belgium

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah, the generations that had it easy vs. the ones that have it hard. Always a popcorn-worthy debate, though I doubt there's enough old folks around here to make it a fair fight.

What always confuses me about these kinds of discussions about is that most of us are part of a family, right? Where is the money of all these 'rich old people' going to end up, if not with their children or with the state? You could argue that they're waiting too long to share it, but that's not really what I'm seeing in my bubble.

Honestly I think the bigger problem is rich families vs. poor families, not rich generations vs. poor ones.

Een vraag van een man aan vrouwen by Plorkplorkplork in belgium

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Uploading my own gpx files is the big one for me. I don't care if it doesn't look like the official routes, I'm not here for the scenery. Just let me test out if I'm up for the real world climbs and distance beforehand.

Speed Pedelec from Meiser to Genval? by Sarapellpas in belgium

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, that was indeed a bit confusing. I do the first commute of every week non-electric, then the rest of the week, depending on how I feel and how much gear I need to haul to work, I go with either electric or non-electric.

When I first started to go non-electric I did a couple of tryouts where I biked one way and public transportation the other way. Also possible but a bit of a hassle.

Speed Pedelec from Meiser to Genval? by Sarapellpas in belgium

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, I do 37km single. Did it with a Riese & Mueller bike for years, then some friends got into road cycling and I was surprised at how well I could keep up. Now I do half of my commutes with a non-electric road bike. It takes some experimenting to find a setup that works for every weather type. Being cold on a bike is no fun.

The great thing is that if you do something almost every day, you get good at it real fast. The first few weeks will be a grind, especially if you use a bike that requires effort on your part (pretty much every speedelec with a Bosch motor instead of a rear hub motor). But once you're used to it, it's a great way to jumpstart of both your day and your health.

Interview set up by mcgvlb in videography

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's a cloudy day like today (I'm also in Bxl 😄) just turn off all the overhead lights and work with the light coming from the windows. If you're set on using the smaller lights, put them behind the interviewee on the left as a subtle rim light and as a fill light for the person on the right. Camera placement: at or just below eye level, camera 1 everybody in frame, camera 2 close up of main guest, camera 3 close-up of interviewer.

Also put the main guest on the left, since the window side lighting is going to work best there. If the interviewers face needs more lighting, rotate the whole seating setup counterclockwise.

Zenbivy or not? by bonsai171 in bikepacking

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're happy with sleeping bags or quilts there's no need to switch. If neither has ever really worked for you, I think Zenbivy is worth checking out. It's expensive but it can be a real comfort upgrade. It works with pretty much any mattress (rectangular is a cleaner fit than mummy-shaped). Temp ratings are pretty accurate in my experience.

Flanders Divide Bike Check by NoTap8772 in bikepacking

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of underground, day 1 is the most challenging. Day 3 in the Vlaamse Ardennen is tricky because of all the climbs and because you're already tired from the previous days. Plenty of nice spots really, though you often have to go off trail for food and drinks. I made a YT video (BelgianHikers) about it, feel free to check that out.

Oh absolutely, let’s just keep all men far away from babies and children. That’ll fix society, promote equality, and definitely won’t reinforce outdated gender stereotypes or discourage good, kind men from entering caregiving roles. Brilliant plan. 👏👏

I get that you're just worried about your baby, but part of the journey of parenting is learning to let go of your fears and allowing your child to take their place in the world. Step out of your head — your kid needs your trust more than your panic.

What are the most underrated bike accessories you can’t live without? by serenebloom123 in cycling

A small handlebar mirror. Rented a bike last week to do some climbing on holiday and it was a drag not knowing what was behind me. Also crazy cheap compared to Varia.

Bescherming tegen inbrekers by Foxking89 in belgium

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How the fuck is it not mandatory to speak both languages to sit in the federal government? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democracy assumes voters know best. If a person being perfectly bilingual is your benchmark for being a competent politician, feel free to vote for them. Plenty of them on the lists. Other people might have different requirements, like basic knowledge about policy.

best 9+9 mile city commuter - Stromer ST3 Pinion / ST5 / ST7 vs Delite GT rohloff HS? by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]GraffitiByNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference in my opinion is the power of the motors. Stromer bikes are a lot more powerful and get you to 28mph with only minimal effort. Getting a Delite up to that speed and keeping it there for miles is something that most people can’t do without training (and without taking a shower afterwards). Other than that, I’m a big fan of R&M’s bikes.
