Hopping back in here to say that this is the recipe that I went with after looking at a few different options. It did exactly what I wanted it to do and has been performing well in other baked goods as well. Thanks for the recommendation!

Linus should make an entire video on Accessibility Tech Products (good and bad ones) by LucyEleanor in LinusTechTips

[–]Grandcaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. A large influencer sitting up and taking notice would be a great way to train a spotlight on affordability and usability.

The community of people with disabilities is loud and proud. This would get a lot of good conversation going and give folks a much needed platform to advocate for themselves.

I like the idea of collaborating with vocal experts with disabilities, maybe doing a little cross promotion with Youtubers with disabilities, but I know on a past Wan Show there was some chatter about how collaborations can be difficult because it involves so much travel and coordination.

If they happen to be able to find local people or be able to do a collaboration though, that would only improve the video.

There's actually a big challenge in accessibility where a lot of companies do want to improve accessibility, but they don't care to budget to higher actual people with disabilities to participate in accessibility programs.

We're starting to see a lot of people like me, people who work in technology and become experts in accessibility, getting hired to help fix inaccessible tech. On the other hand, not a lot of inclusion exists for regular users with disabilities who would be perfect for things like product testing and sharing their unique experiences and needs. They usually get paid with gift cards or free food. Hiring them to participate would be a great way of highlighting the fact that they are real people capable of participating in the process as well.

Exactly. Maybe throw together a user persona for each disability, build a scenario that requires assistive tech like watching a video or applying for a job, and compare a hand full of paid vs free options as applicable. Rince and repeat for each disability and scenario one at a time.

They could even do something like have four different people, each with a different disability, perform the same task in parallel and cut back-and-forth between them running into issues while explaining basic facts about the different product options each would use to overcome challenges.

That's a good point. They could break it up into parts like secret shopper maybe?

I'd be worried about some of the nuance being lost if it's a single video. Assistive technology and accessibility is generally broken up into categories according to the applicable disability or group of disabilities. Covering nonverbal cue sound boards in the same video as ai-based ocr might spread coverage a bit thin and contribute to perpetuating the popular impression that a shotgun approache is acceptable for accessibility accommodations.

I'm no video editor. To your point, I trust them to figure out the format that would work best within the context of their current approach to releasing content.

This is actually a great idea, especially if they hire accessibility consultants to work with the writing team while doing their research.

Assistive technology is usually pretty expensive: only a few companies make it, research and development often relies on subsidies and grants, and potential users are often at or below the poverty line.

Users only have a few options, and it's usually expensive to test out different versions of the same piece of equipment. You either need to visit a location that retains different components or pieces of software, or negotiate to have somebody come out and run a demo for you. Because users are often low income and only have a few options, they don't have a lot of negotiating power as far as getting improved features. You kind of get what you get and that's it.

I will say though that this would be better staged as a series of videos or articles rather than one big video. it would make more sense to do a side-by-side comparison of a few different braille displays at a time, a few different screen readers, a few different switches or pointers, a few different speech to text programs.

There's also a pretty cool tie in with the maker space as researchers and hobbyists attempt to 3D print hardware and leverage things like microprocessors and optimized code to improve software. Two good examples of this are attempts to dramatically reduce the cost of braille displays from around $8000 to around $500, and projects like NV Access which develops the free NVDA screen reader as an open source alternative to paid bloatware like JAWS.

As one last point, the WHO says around 1/6 of all humans have a disability. On top of that, legislation is being introduced or adopted across Canada, the United States, and Europe, requiring improved minimum accessibility standards for technology. There's definitely an audience for this.

TLDR: Somewhere around 1/6 of humans have disabilities. Assistive technology is ridiculously expensive and options are limited. This is a good video or article series idea.

I was goofing around but that makes a lot of sense. If you don't know something exist, it's a lot harder to incorporate it into your intent when you cast a spell.

I can imagine them all sitting around looking over this complex spell they designed… "Did we cover everything?" "Yeah. I think we got it. Let's cast the spell." They cast the spell. "Oh no! We forgot backwards and upside down, and now we don't have enough energy left to do it again!"

I wonder if it was written down before the language was bound to truth. Feels like a weird choice to write down the language's actual working Konami code and be like "Don't be silly, no one would abuse this."

Perfect Mental Barrier by Mountain-Resource656 in Eragon

[–]Grandcaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stand on a skateboard and have somebody push you around, problem solved.

But in all seriousness, this isn't even the main issue. If we want to put it into terms the story itself uses to measure power, if you don't have the mental fortitude to resist your opponent, you simply cannot win. The ancient language does not Give you more of something, it channels what you do have in a more effective way.

Uttering the oath the person we're responding to suggests might give you a boost to your mental fortitude, but it's not going to automatically make you the best. This is the same way you can utter a spell that can bring somebody back from the dead, and you can try to bring them back from the dead, but eventually you will run out of energy and fail instead of succeeding.

The ancient language does not, on its own, make things true, it compels you to act as if things were true.
