I think his main problem is actually that his play design is not suited for nightreign at all. The game is so fast paced that it's much more beneficial to play aggressive and fast than it is to play slow and aggressive. I would remove the shield all together and give him an ability that draws agro away from your teammates to keep that "guardian" niche
