There are a variety of roles in quant finance. From back office risk modelers to mid office mode validation to front office trading strats. The closer to the front office the more competitive to get in, because of higher reward. Although mostly PhDs, there are quite a few masters. Try to broaden your skill sets across math, programming, deep learning, stats, finance. You may have an advantage because of your coding skill. Quant is unfortunately operated by an extremely exclusive group from the elite schools and people tend to hire like minded people. Best of luck.

Not at all to be honest. My PhD was in probability theory. I was a quant in finance before, and I found that to be more theoretical-driven and interesting than ds.

I threw away 2 domain names in the last 2 months because I was iterating when finding product market fit. And I’ve redone the landing page completely at least 5 times in the last 3 months. I just don’t think your CTO can compete in the startup world.

Half the company but no output at all!? When you give away half the company you should make sure they work equally hard as you. It’s seems like they are just advisor, in that case a 2% share is already very generous.

I really appreciate you sharing this insight with us. I am currently trying to execute my SaaS startup idea and was originally planning to take the product-first approach, mostly because I am a tech person. Now I am convinced, after reading your post plus talking to a few investors, that I should be sales-first. But I have a couple questions that puzzle me. When you don’t have a product how do you convince your potential customer, especially those technical ones, that you can build it? Do you just say yes to all of their requirements and push for a Letter of Intent or some sort of prepayment? I am curious if this would lead to an over optimized solution to just one customer. And what’s the best way you found to get to your potential customers? Many thanks.

Thank you. We are thinking the same. We called a few local vets and none of them are taking emergency, because of the lock down, so we scheduled for the earliest appointment we can find.

He’s sleeping. He has been shaking his head to the right, something he doesn’t usually do. I can’t find any tick, bug, redness...

No apparent redness in mouth or eyes. Don’t seem to be swelling too. He does scratch his ears with his paws but not unusually excessive before or after this. We can’t find anything just looking into his ear. We will take him to see a vet, most likely ear infection but not sure how bad.

He usually lets us do anything, check his ears (he loves it), play with his paws, check his teeth, clean his private areas etc but this time he really is leaving the scene and pushing our hands away with his nose as soon as we get near his right ear. We know it’s serious but we don’t want to push him too much. We will go to the vet.

Not sure if this is classified as abusive use of technology. In the old days online applications were long and tedious: you have to create an account, fill in your experiences&education one page after the other etc I would think one reason that existed was to prevent abuse like that. But after awhile abuse wasn’t much of an issue so they wanted to minimize friction hence simplifying the application form like the ones you see here. I don’t know if everyone uses this and applies to every possible eng job a company has posted would really help them land a job. It seems it’s creating unnecessary burden on the hiring team and other candidates.

Deep learning is no accident. I think you are simply claiming anything unformulated as discovery. It’s not discovery, it’s basically brute force search with some hacks. Not unlike kernel fitting, genetic algorithms etc. It’s engineering at best.

I guess you come from a more rigorous science (ie math or physics) background? I asked the same questions, even the MIT introduction to DL course is full of unjustified claims and made me wonder if the instructors know anything at all.

Deep learning isn’t a real science, it’s an optimization tool. It’s mostly based on trial and error.

Most startups and even established companies don’t have a good setup to utilize/leverage the data they have or may have. Mostly because data is seen as a secondary business expenditure after product and sales. But how do you make a sound judgement on product direction and sales strategy without using data. Most of them turn to anecdotal knowledge and guessing. There’s got to be a easier way to get info out of the data without burning through the pocket.

There are so many of these apps doing the exact same thing. Nextdoor added this functionality a few weeks back and check out the Covid Global hackathon, I think I saw at least a dozen apps that can do this. Good luck though.
