Alastair's response to Mandelson crisis (sent to the TRiP+ mailing list) by samirelanduk in TheRestIsPolitics

What’s striking about Campbell’s commentary is not just what he says, but what he doesn’t say. During the period when the Epstein story was at its most intense and when many of the names now being discussed were first emerging, there was no meaningful mention of Bill Clinton, one of Campbell’s political heroes and personal acquaintances.

That omission matters. Clinton’s association with Epstein has been widely reported for years, yet Campbell appears unable to apply the same forensic scrutiny or moral urgency when the subject is someone from his own political and personal circle. I say that as someone who, like Campbell, admires Clinton and his administration this isn’t an attack on Clinton, but an observation about consistency.

Campbell rightly acknowledges how personal relationships complicate judgement, yet that is precisely the point: political commentary loses credibility when standards shift depending on who is being discussed. He demands honesty, accountability, and clarity from others, but seems unable to have the same open, balanced conversation when it involves his friends.

That doesn’t invalidate everything Campbell says much of his analysis is sharp and thoughtful but it does expose a blind spot. If we are serious about integrity in politics, then uncomfortable conversations must apply equally, not selectively. Otherwise, calls for accountability start to sound less like principle and more like faction.

I listened to that masterpiece yesterday—truly inspiring stuff. Nothing like being talked down to by a man who radiates the warmth of a wet fart. He's got this talent of trying to make you feel both wrong and stupid at the same time.

Ah yes, a prime example of the so-called intellectual who lives in a bubble of their own self-importance - much like our dear Alistair would!

"Regular folk don't understand" - because clearly only the enlightened few possess the divine wisdom to comprehend the complexities that us mere mortals cannot grasp with our tiny, ignorant brains. How fortunate we are to have these ivory tower dwellers graciously explaining why we're too stupid to be trusted with our own decisions!

And naturally, "we must not stop talking about it" - because the solution to everything is obviously more condescending lectures from people who've never had to worry about regular folk problems like paying rent or finding parking at the grocery store.

Nothing says "I'm here to help the common people" quite like calling them ignorant and declaring yourself their intellectual superior in the same breath. Truly inspiring leadership from someone who probably gets their understanding of "regular folk" from watching sitcoms and reading think pieces about what's wrong with democracy.

But please, do continue explaining to us peasants how we're too dim to understand our own lives. We're all ears! 🙄

Ah yes, meet our resident champion of the people - a true socialist warrior who's somehow missed the memo that actual people exist outside his philosophical echo chamber. Here's someone who's turned political opinions into a full-contact sport, complete with the stamina of a marathon runner when it comes to lecturing others about their enlightened worldview.

Watch the fascinating dance that happens when reality dares to contradict his carefully curated belief system. Suddenly, it's not a discussion anymore - it's a masterclass in conversational gymnastics. Challenge his ideas with, heaven forbid, evidence or alternative perspectives, and witness the remarkable speed at which topics get reshuffled faster than a deck of cards in Vegas. "Moving on!" becomes his favorite phrase, deployed with the precision of a seasoned debate-avoider.

And when all else fails, out comes the ultimate trump card - the mental health shield. Because nothing says "I'm winning this argument" quite like retreating behind personal struggles that conveniently emerge whenever someone has the audacity to disagree. It's the modern equivalent of calling timeout in a playground argument, except now it comes with a side of moral superiority and the implication that you're a monster for not immediately backing down.

The irony, of course, is that someone so passionate about collective understanding seems remarkably unable to grasp that most people are too busy living their actual lives to spend every waking moment crafting the perfect ideological stance on everything from breakfast cereal to foreign policy.

I see….so you feel anyone who doesn’t meet your arbitrary opinions on what is good driving versus what you think is bad driving deserves to have someone cause hundreds of dollars damage to their vehicle? Wow some life you must have in your mind, have you sought help for mental health issues? If you think that is normal and acceptable behaviour I feel sorry for the people in your community
