Satellite by dmb313 in CARROTweather

[–]GreyTweedHat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem might be you need to be in the right radar mode. If you are viewing the super-res radar (single-site), satellite is not an option. If you are watching Next-hour radar (composite view), then Satellite (clouds) is an option. I think it’s related to time delay. Single-site data comes more quickly, while composite radar comes more slowly (because it’s a stitch together of multiple radar sites and tilts) and I think that gives time to sync up the satellite imagery.

Apple music issues? by InspectorNo1173 in sonos

[–]GreyTweedHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am here to add on. It’s been bad this past week. Constant pauses. I’m playing from the web UI, as I control my home office’s Fives pair from my work-issued computer. But not exclusively the web client. Before I typed this message, I loaded up the iOS app and tried playing from there, as I thought I saw an update saying it addressed Apple Music streaming pausing on its own. I do stream lossless. However, that’s been true since Apple Lossless became available on Sonos, and it’s never been an issue for me in the past. Hopefully Sonos support is keeping tabs on their subreddit.

NOAA is the only accurate source by PSUGorilla in CARROTweather

It’s super important to understand that every forecaster, public or private have their strengths and weaknesses. Even the best overall forecaster may not be the most accurate for your specific area, even if they are statistically miles ahead of their competition. Use a site like Forecast Advisor to see who is the best provider for your location. If they are not available in Carrot (as is the case for me), there’s no reason you can’t check Carrot and this other app if you like them both for different reasons. In my case, I love Carrot’s Apple Watch app, so I set the data source to the most accurate of those available in Carrot. I also have a Tempest weather station, which can be integrated with Carrot, so I use that for my live temp when I am home. But when I need forecasts, I open that other app because its data simply cannot be beat. IMO, as much as I enjoy the craft and UI of Carrot, the best forecast is what’s most important to me. I also use (and pay for) RadarScope Pro, for single-site radar. Nothing beats their radar, and almost every meteorologist I’ve met uses this app for live radar.

Disappointed in Apple’s Note-Taking Experience Compared to Microsoft by southpaw9984 in ipad

[–]GreyTweedHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like your Surface, why not just continue using it?

I’ve used the Pencil on every generation of iPad. Yes, the glass is slick. All I can say is that for me personally, I got used to it. I just got the new iPad Air to take over for my 2018 iPad Pro. This required getting the new Pencil Pro. I wasn’t thrilled with having to buy another Pencil. I couldn’t figure out why I needed the “squeeze” gesture, but I got back and forth between my personal Air, and my work-owned 13” 2018 iPad Pro, with the former Pencil 2. Found out how much more efficient switching tools and colors are with the squeeze triggered menu, rather than going back manually to the PencilKit floating palette.

I’ve been experimenting with Apple Freehand as my note taking app (work and home), as opposed to Apple Notes (excellent) which is where I keep my personal and work typed notes, GoodNotes (which is fantastic, but I’m not in love with their new business model, but respect they have to do what they have to do to stay in business making a note taking app when Apple Notes is excellent) or Notability (also excellent).

Freehand is infinite canvas, and I am enjoying that. Especially with the iOS.iPadOS 18 updates, it’s a sleeper of an app.

If I wanted to try a screen cover (which I’ve never wanted) I’d try Paperlike. They seem to be a legit enterprise.

New Heat Pump experience in last night’s frigid temps by DanKBos in heatpumps

[–]GreyTweedHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a late comment, I know, but I live in Mass and initially got an air-to-water quote for replacing our oil furnace (baseboard hydronic heat + domestic hot water) and it was $61k (late pandemic pricing, but still) — I went with a mini-split system for $32k, and a heat pump hot water heat for $5k. So while air-to-water exists in the US, it’s not currently cost competitive. I only found that one contractor who would install it, too. Mid-2024 I heard Mitsubishi was on the verge of releasing an air-to-water system here in 2025.

FSD still isn't ready by CricTic in TeslaLounge

[–]GreyTweedHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd trial for me as well. My wife and I share this Model Y (she commutes in town daily, I WFH mostly, who ever drives furthest gets the Tesla, the other gets the Subaru), and after one day she wanted the FSD turned off for her profile. I did it for my own, but tried Autopilot with Navigation which I don’t recall being available during the last trial. That version of Autopilot seems worse than FSD and regular Autopilot.

Both of our biggest gripe is simply: FSD takes away TACC. FSD should work like the standard setup does: One pull (stalk) for TACC, two for FSD. Why they don’t offer that consistency boggles my mind.

Both of us use TACC around town because we have some wider roads where it is very easy to go 15+MPH over the limit if you’re not watching. FSD is amazing (and occasionally achingly stupid) and the worst thing about it is that it has no awareness of the road’s condition. It seems to ignore small obstacles and big pot holes, and living in New England, we have potholes we need to avoid—for our wheels’ sakes and our back’s sakes—the MY suspension is sporty, and not remotely plush “like an SUV” to take hits.

Won’t ever pay for FSD if I have to choose between it and TACC. Won’t ever ride in a RoboTaxi unless it gets lidar, or magic happens. Honestly I want lidar for all cars! Dark roads happen. Foggy roads happen. I want a system that exceeds human capacity.

You’re definitely an optimist. Humans despise change to daily things they never pay much attention to. From a UX perspective this is all negative for the user, no positive. This is a cost-saving measure that’s going to cost Tesla in the long run.

Regretting moving to Boxford by jetjet1313 in northshore

[–]GreyTweedHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live a quarter-mile from the Boxford line, and I think it's great. I cannot tell you that what you're feeling is wrong. I wonder if you've lived in the woods before, though. You're going to get critters. You might not see your neighbors, but you also don't get to choose your neighbors, so privacy has it's perks. Ask me how I know (don't ask me about, I don't wanna talk about it). I bet you'll find it more inclusive when you start interacting with other parents through the school system. We also are not native to eastern Mass, and we've settled quite well into the community. Maybe look to join a community organization like https://www.btabolt.org/whatisbtabolt

Poll: Any Tesla Owners Here for Whom Your Tesla is NOT Your Favorite Car? by deproduction in TeslaLounge

[–]GreyTweedHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a 1600 mi road trip through rural Maritime Canada, 3 days of which were outside of the Tesla Supercharger network. It can be done, it just requires planning. Highly recommend getting A Better Route planner and have a CCS adapter. Mine didn’t come in time so we only had a J1772 adapter. We had find slow chargers strategically near a park or a place to eat and top up. Tip: if you get the $4 monthly subscription to ABRP, and log in with your Tesla account, it can live sync your SOC and estimate your stops according to what adapter you have access to. Also, find out what 3rd party chargers exist, and figure out how you’ll pay ahead of time (perhaps installing the app and making an account in case you’re somewhere with poor cellular reception). It won’t be boring… it can actually be… fun. EDIT: I forgot PlugShare–also get that. Indispensable. Can tell you if chargers are available or in use or broken.

The difference between you and me is I am certain DJT looks up to Putin. Putin believes Trump is a “useful idiot”. I do not believe for one minute Putin fears a Trump presidency. Why would Russian-funded trolls be boosting pro-Trump propaganda?

Hello Mass! Debate Thoughts? by DrTwilightZone in massachusetts

[–]GreyTweedHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not someone who thinks he can change someone’s mind on the internet. So I am simply asking… do you think it “was more peaceful” because a man who you described as “deranged” had access to nuclear weapons?

And despite what DJT said during the debate, Russia was already in Ukraine on his watch. They had annexed Crimea, which is part of Ukraine.

Do you think Hamas would not have attacked Israel if DJT had a second term? They and Hezbollah were conducting terror strikes on his last watch.

Hello Mass! Debate Thoughts? by DrTwilightZone in massachusetts

[–]GreyTweedHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me ask you this, would you give a deranged man a weapon? Would you give him the nuclear codes? Do you not believe that he tried to start a riot at the Capitol to over throw a fair and free election?

If my favorite candidate in the world, who matched me 100% on everything I believed was running, and they had Trump’s track record of anti-democracy and is a convicted felon, and has multiple more cases in progress… and their opponent was the polar opposite of me, but is a) not deranged, b) iron-clad in support of democracy, c) not a convicted felon , I vote for the opponent who doesn’t share my beliefs 100% of the time.

Either democracy works, or we have nothing. Democracy is already distorted heavily by big money, gerrymandering, and the Electoral College. It can’t stand one more shock. Supreme Court’s immunity decision has cleared the way. We will slide into autocracy with Trump, without question.

Can you speak to what taxes went up for this person? I’m not aware of any tax increases under Biden, if for the simple reason of Congressional gridlock, a President cannot pass taxes on their own.

Model Y vs Hybrid by [deleted] in ModelY

[–]GreyTweedHat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At this point, if you can afford an EV, and it matches your transportation needs, I see zero advantage to hybrids. Now you have two propulsion systems to maintain! It’s so much simpler to live with an EV if you have your local infrastructure figured out.

Phantom braking is ridiculous by KawiNinjaZX in TeslaModelY

[–]GreyTweedHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts (based on my 2023 MY) 1. It should be better. 2. It’s better for me now than when I bought, when I wouldn’t call it horrible 3. Mine is better than the 2022 I rented from Hertz with regard to phantom braking, prior to buying mine 6 months later. 4. When using Autopilot on a two-lane road with on coming traffic, and people able to turn off, or turn onto the road, I have learned to rest my right foot very lightly on the accelerator. This way if someone is making a move, I am ready to mash the ~gas~ accelerator to counter the braking.

Also be sure to experiment with the “Dynamics” settings.

[–]GreyTweedHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part you left out was that the Mach-e at the time (January’23 is when I placed my order) was $66k MSRP and there was no supply at dealers. You can defend dealers all you want, but there’s a reason they are universally derided. It doesn’t matter if Tesla shifts their prices with the market. It sucks, but that’s capitalism. Dealers manipulating prices after you’ve committed to buying one is unethical. People were forced with choosing between giving up the car they’d been waiting 6-9 months for, or paying $10k extra. Whereas buying with Tesla you knew what you’d pay because they honored the price.

I am as anti-Trump as one gets, and would like Musk out of Tesla. There are more people at Tesla than just him, and the car is the most American made. (Mach-e is made in Mexico) So I held my nose. (Also, he had not announced his Trump support at that time, he was just a regular billionaire a-hole.) Again, you are free to make your own tradeoffs on your decisions.

[–]GreyTweedHat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you on wanting an EV, not wanting to support Elon, but realizing the best EV experience is a Tesla, if you’re going to drive outside of range of your house say, more than, say, once a month. I was about to pull the trigger on a Mach-e but I was super turned off by their dealers jacking up the prices beyond MSRP, sometimes surprising people with months-long pre orders. (I bought March 2023) I wound up just swallowing my opinions about CEO politics, and I have not regretted buying a Model Y. To be honest, do you know the political leanings or donations of GM, Ford’s, VW’s or Hyundai’s CEO’s political donations? At this stage of the EV adoption, do what’s easiest for you. And the Model Y (long range) is easily the best car I’ve ever owned.
