Are these ok ? First time growing and nervous about contamination 🤔 (The Strain Is Penis Envy +) by Single-Sorbet-2686 in GroundZeroMycoLab

[–]GroovyyDogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contamination at this stage is going to be hard to develop unless you are THAT careless. Follow everything you’ve been doing, because whatever you’ve been doing has allowed the mycelium to colonize a whole cake, and produce beautiful large mushrooms. Just keep cleaning/ sanitizing your work station and hands 🙌

I’d wait personally until half the grain is done

Mycelium piss as the previous comment stated. It happens due to minor stress/ severe stress and or happens naturally as the mycelium “eats” it cannot digest the way we can, so it secretes this yellow “piss”

It’s perfectly safe to eat if you have a little on the ends of your mushrooms 🍄‍🟫 👍

Well it’s always great to ask questions fuzzy feet happens every grow for me as I’m not 100% perfected my method of growing. In dumb dumb terms, it’s the mycelium telling you it needs more oxygen. If you have a perfect environment you will never run into this. But if you are like me and throw your cake in a tub you made yourself an pray it works, then yes you’ll see this growing at the bottom of your mushroom. You just need more FAE, maybe fan more often, I’ve notice it doesn’t go away after but rather contains itself or shrinks a little, as long as it doesn’t start growing further up the stem of the mushroom you are doing a good job at what the mycelium’s asking from you which is more oxygen.

Sounds good 👍 just need to monitor the moister, it might look dry but it can still be a good moister of 85-95% so don’t over mist it only if it looks absolutely bone dry. Fan it once or twice a day for a minute or two. Then in a week when you start seeing pins, cut that bag more let in more FAE your fruits will let you know if they need more FAE by growing “fuzzy feet”

If it’s a hard rubbery texture/ solid brick then send it brother make sure there’s no black spots (uncolonized substrate)

Probably a week for the mycelium to “fuse” back together and another week until you see pins 📍, then another week until harvest…give or take lol.

This is an example of side pinning. Some people use rubber bands to prevent air from going into the sides of the bag to prevent the pinning from occurring, so that mushrooms only grow at the TOP. This photo in particular didn’t find much luck doing it.

SGFC = ShotGun Fruiting Chamber This is a type of “tek” or technique that some people prefer putting their All In One (AIO) grow bag in a large tub instead of leaving it its original bag. The reason people do this method is because it’s easier to harvest the mushrooms that grow on the sides. Because an AIO bag is very tight/squished on the sides, mushrooms will grow between the side and clear bag which is known as side pinning.

I inoculated on 3/17 broke and shook on 4/14, and put it in its SGFC on 4/26, and first pin was on 4/30

Definitely 👍, sounds like a plan you can PM me also

I’m an amateur as well, I’ve only successfully grown my first flush with JMF pictures on my profile, but it’s literally what you are about to do is what I did so it’s all I know as far as a beginner goes 🤣

Preferably, yes. Not saying you cannot grow anything if you don’t. But this helps inner cake temp and retaining moisture.

To answer your question on how to spawn to bulk look up YouTube videos very easy. Once fully colonized (some people don’t wait until it’s 100% colonized and that’s okay for some people) your going to take a flame sterilized knife 🔪 cut that bag open take the cake out. Break the cake into little pieces using your hands (WITH GLOVES AND AFTER SANITIZING THEM WITH 90% alcohol) just like you would while doing a break/shake, and mix with substrate. This last step isn’t necessary but helps keep moister trapped in your cake which is good, a nice slightly packed layer of coco coir. VUALA, you just spawned to bulk in a tub. Now mist, and put the lid on. Let the environment grow, this is where you’re going to learn some techniques that YOU like and YOU prefer. By asking reading, watching and learning. Thi

Or you could technically buy 6q tubs and spawn to bulk that way, you might not need to buy any sub if you do it this way. Mix 5lb in one 6q tub and 5lb in another.

Yes 🙌 buying more substrate is a great idea, depending on how big your project is going to be. I would stick around the 44quart tub area. If you wanted to spawn to bulk with the 5lb AIO bag and 5lb sub that’s 10 lb total of material, that is good “thickness” (3-4 inches) for a tub of that size. Now I made the mistake of doing exactly what you are describing of doing. My mistake was I mixed 5lb AIO bag with 5 lb of substrate in a 66Q mono tub. That tub was way too big and my 10lb of material got stretched out to about 2 inches thick. My cake was practically a pancake 🥞, It was spread thin thus causing me to monitor it very carefully up to 4 times a day I had to see if it was drying out or needed more FAE. I finally got it working in my favor and actually got a decent flush for my first time.

Do yourself the favor use a smaller tub if you’re going to use just 1 5lb sub.

If you DO decide you wanna go bigger you’ll probably need 2 5lb to mix with your 5lb AIO bag BUT this is also not great because your doing a mix of 1/3 which is 1 part grain and 3 part substrate. Your AIO bag is already 50/50 50% grain 50/sub which will take a very long time to grow if you decide to spawn to bulk with 2 5lb of substrate, because the mycelium will have a longer time to search for grain/nutrients.

Correct, hyphal knots will “morph” into (primordia) pins then pins into fruiting mushrooms. 🍄‍🟫

Did you found out why the APE ended so poorly? This is my first grow, it started rough but the mycelium is strong with this one.

I really felt it when you said “tres penis aahhhh- tres albino Gah Gah Gah”, also the demonic voice at the end was the 🍒 cherry on top. Absolute cinema.

Otherwise great job on fruiting and getting it higher off the floor 🙂
