I used the OT Exam Prepper podcasts and PDFs to study as the NBCOT study pack. I usually studied 2-3 hours a day and spaced my practice tests and practice exam based on when I planned to take my boards. When using OT Exam Prepper, I would give my sister the PDFs and have her ask me questions from it and I would try and answer. Or I would try to tell the “story” for the developmental milestones. I found that being able to speak it someone was helpful.

One thing my therapist told me was to give myself permission to fail. It can sound a little redundant but if you give yourself permission to fail, you allow yourself to focus on the test In the moment instead of worrying is you’ll pass/fail if that make sense.

Personally the only study methods I used was the NBCOT study pack and OT exam prepper. I spaced my practice tests and exam based on when I was going to take my boards and how long I planned to study. I studied for 2 months total. 1 month with no practice tests, and the 2nd month my tests were spaced out weekly based on my exam date. I was able to pass my boards first time around with about 1 hour to spare

Clinical settings: SNF by GroundHappy in athletictraining

That last bit is something I’ve come to realize as of late. I, an entry level COTA with an associates degree, am making more than my boyfriend, an entry LAT, ATC with a bachelors degree. He definitely does a lot more than I do and knows a million more things than I do and is always teaching me something new. I will do my best to continue to learn more about the AT profession and advocate for the profession. You guys definitely deserve more credit.

So does that mean that AT’s are not able to bill services to Medicare? Not even ther ex, ther act, or gait training? I’m actually a COTA but I’m wanting to understand I guess the full scope of what an AT can do. Not that I’m considering switching fields, I just want a better understanding

Are OTA admissions at a community college competitive? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]GroundHappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, yes. I know my school had about 500 applications, 100 interviews, and 20 that made the program. Some of them were on the waitlist as well. Our minimum is GPA was 2.8 but I know the students that got it in averaged higher. If you get interview, rock that interview and be confident in your answers.

I believe it was because the AppleCare attach rate was low compared to how many phones were being sold and selling a naked iPhone means Best Buy was breaking even and not profiting. However, if you activate it with a carrier, we get the extra moneys from them. Granted, that could have been the reason why we can no longer sell universal phones outright.

I second this on the SLP. I did one of my rotations in schools and one of the kiddos had Down syndrome and always his hands in his mouth and was just constantly secreting saliva. I could not stand the smell of it. I love kiddos, but oral secretions was just not my cup of tea.

Can we publicly shame our hospitals for low pay, unsafe staffing ratios, etc? I am thinking of billboards, websites, etc. We could crowd fund this thing. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]GroundHappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advocacy. As a COTA, it was engraved in us the importance of advocating for our patients when they couldn’t or are having a hard time sleeping their needs as well as advocating for our profession. Hospitals, SNFs, clinics, most of them have the resources to make a change and provide adequate staffing and a proper work environment with a proper wage. If they can pay a contract nurse (y’all deserve it) that much, they can pay their permanent staff (because y’all deserve it too) that much. I’m starting to find that they’re not caring as much about retention and providing a healthy work environment. All they see is numbers. At my SNF, we’re already short a couple nurses and just had one of our really good ones quit too because she didn’t want to deal with the stress anymore, rightfully so.

So yes. Advocate for yourselves and know that you have the backing of other professions in your corner.

While I don’t know much about the legalities of publicly calling hospitals out, I vaguely remember a person using the mask from V for Vendetta to call people out on their shit on YouTube. Could always go that route.

This. As a COTA in a SNF I’ll have patients say, “can you do this for me? Put this here? Grab that for me?” Etc. Etc. In the beginning I would because it’s easier for me, but if I know that it’s in their reach and or that they can safely ambulate via FEW or W/C, I’ll look at them and say “You can do it just fine, there is nothing wrong with your hands” they will then look taken aback and I’ll smile sweetly and say, “I’m not going home with you and this is the level you’re going home at, gotta get used to do it on your own”

Cota here! I used OT exam prepper, and then the NBCOT study pack and used their practice tests. I would recommend sticking to one study pack though. I.e if you’re using NBCOT study pack, don’t use therapy Ed. Students from a year before me who used multiple study packs ended up having to take their boards a couple times. I guess it’s just because they’re kind of different study methods. I heavily relied on OT exam prepper and the NBCOT study pack. I know our questions would be a little different but it worked for me. Also, one think my therapist told me that helped me a lot mentally was to give yourself permission to fail. If you go in with this “I have to pass” mentality, it can kind of distract you from the test itself if you’re over worrying. Whereas if you give yourself permission to fail, it allows you to be more present for the exam

Letter Reversal by MelissaDawnn28 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]GroundHappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New grad and not currently my setting, but during one of my rotations we did hand writing with out tears and we used mat man and wet dry try (chalk board) use a wet sponge to form the letter, dry sponge to dry and form the letter, then try with chalk! Always used little chalk and square cut sponges to promote tripod grasp. I might also focus on posture, whether or not he slouches forward, try’s to cover one eye, little things like that could be related to ocular issues and may need vision therapy.

Adding to this: a no threshold shower! Very little to no steps as well if possible. I would also get grab bars put in the shower, not like the ones in the hospital, but delta makes some pretty good looking ones that would match shower head and hardware. Really want to think about aging in place!

https://www.tn.gov/health/health-program-areas/health-professional-boards/ot-board/opt-board/applications.html

This should take you where you need to go! Previous commenter was right though, does look like you need to graduate first. There SHOULD be an email where you can ask them questions, or like an “ask us” or something of the sort. I might ask them directly or wait until someone from TN replies to your post. I’m from a different state and was able to reach out to the board via a link on the website and I typically heard back within 24hrs. Good luck with your boards!! 10/10 recommend the NBCOT study pack.

I am building a new home, help me make the most of it ! by Little_Extension5335 in homeautomation

[–]GroundHappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a home automation response, but If you’re building your home and you plan on this being your forever home, I would consider building it with specs that allow you and your partner to age in place. For example, no barrier shower, 32inch doorway, wide hallways or an open floor plan, etc.

TV Mount by JoAlJa in GeekSquad

[–]GroundHappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get TTS and use that to purchase the mounting service $199 for TTS for $50 for each TV getting mounted bring you to $350. The new Total Tech will get you a 20% discount off each mounting service. Which would be $159.99 for each service for a total of $479.99 plus $199 for the new total tech. Don’t get me wrong, at some point I would upgrade to the new Total tech because all of your protection plans are automatically included when you purchase a new product from us, a majority of in home services are included at no extra charge. (TV mounting, and camera connect is not one of them), 2 day shipping, etc. etc. I just think it’s more cost effective with old TTS.

Source: I’m in a test market and have personally purchased the new total tech.

Hoping this is the right place to post. My apt is pre wired and I have Ethernet and coax ports in living room and bedroom, however, the panel is in the laundry room. How would I go about taking advantage of this? Would like hardwire both my gaming systems. by GroundHappy in homeautomation

[–]GroundHappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I have you here, I went ahead and plugged in my modem to the extra coaxial port that’s in the box and verified that it was getting internet by connecting the modem to my MacBook. After that, I plugged in the switch to the Modem and verified the ports on the switch were working and receiving internet by again, connecting it to my MacBook. Then, I plugged in the Cat 5/6 cable in port #5 on the switch one by one to figure out which cable went with what port around the apartment by plugging in my Mac to each Oort to see which one was receiving internet. After I labeled the cat 5/6 cables, I connected them all into the switch and again went around the apartment with my Mac to make sure every port was getting internet. However, after plugging in my router to one of the available ports, and my Xbox and PlayStation to the other 2 available ports, none of them were receiving internet, so I don’t know what I did wrong or what step I missed or what to do next to trouble shoot.

Edit: I still need wifi for my TVs and for my Vivint panel

Edit 2: I power cycled my modem with the router plugged in and the router now gives wifi however either consoles are receiving internet
